John Martin is the new Bill Horton for the Alice Horton tribute.

    WAY too young-looking.

Bill needed to be recast as older. It makes him look like the younger brother of Marie when he is her older brother.

Wow, I totally remember him as Dorian's boyfriend Jon on OLTL many years ago. I think he had a fling with Cassie, too.

True that Bill would never really be that young, but the SORAS-ing and de-SORAS-ing of various Horton family members makes ages of family members impossible to take seriously.

Your DOOL knowledge continues to impress me, TJ. I'm not loving the recast. I'd make up an excuse for Bill not being able to make it to the funeral before I'd recast with someone who has never had anything to do with the show. New faces don't belong on tribute episodes. Unfortunately, this means that we won't be seeing old clips with Francis Reid in scenes with any of the former Bills. :(

Jon Russell also had a fling with Dorian's late sister (and Cassie's aunt) Melinda too (though Dorian was not on the show during that particular romance).

Thanks for the kudos, minx! This actor would be the age of Mike, Bill's son - but NOT Bill!

I most certainly am NOT defending this recast, but how close in age were Bill and Julie? I know they were uncle and niece, but in a multi-generational family, those can be close in age. That's the only way I can wrap my mind around this.

There was an excellent website a few years ago (I don't know if it's still up), that figured out that Alice would have been about 100+, Marlena in her mid-70s, etc. if the Days characters aged like normal humans.

I had a mini-crush on Mike (Wesley Eure) and a huge one on his second cousin David (Richard Guthrie) back in the 70s. They were roughly about the same age. The Mike/Trish/David love triangle was one of my all-time favorite storylines. I didn't like the David recast (David Marx) in the early 80s. He was a wimp compared to Guthrie's David and I especially hated Michael T. Weiss as Mike in the 80s. His attempts at humor constantly had me reaching for the fast forward button on the remote control.

In opinion it is sooo stupid to bring in a new actor to play Bill Horton for the tribute to Alice Horton played by Frances Reid. John Martin never had any scenes as Bill Horton with Frances Reid. I wish that were bringing back one the the actors who played Bill Horton for the Alice Horton tribute.

I'm pretty sure both the actors who played Bill before are dead, which is why they had to do this recast.

    They are dead.

Bill was last mentioned working in Africa, so it would have been believable for him not to have been able to attend (though Laura was working with him too, and she is making it).

Hey - maybe they can recast Tom Jr. with a 30 year-old!

    LOL!

I'm assuming Deidre Hall's Marlena won't be visiting for the memorial. Too bad; she could have taken the podium and waxed nostalgic about the good old days when she choked Alice to death with a doughnut. "Only....surprise! She wasn't really dead, no matter how hard I tried! Yeah, that Alice sure was a cut-up."

No, DH will not be there (rumor has it that TPTB are miffed because she refused a cameo in what was thought to be Grace's funeral).

She said (and I quote) "I was not asked to participate - not that I expected to be."

No big deal to me, as it will only be for a handful of episodes.

I also believe a large part of 2010's Days' audience wasn't watching all those years ago when Bill was on, so they won't know the difference.

Wonder if Bill and Jennifer will have screentime together ??

John Martin is about the same age as Wesley Eure who played Bill's son Mike in the 70s, so that gives you an idea.

As for the purpose of returning Bill. Kenny Corday had mentioned before that the Hortons would be re-introduced before Reid passed away, and most assumed Bill (or possibly Tommy) would be coming back.

I made the comment a few years ago when FR's health began declining that maybe it was time to let Alice die respectfully while most of the cast was still around to say goodbye. It wasn't meant to be disrespectful at all. FR could stay in the titles as the star and when she felt like it, why not let Alice's spirit comfort/guide those she cares about. But it was met with such hatred as if I said burn her at the stake. Seriously, FR was a professional and would have understood despite the immaturity and sentimentality of some fans.

And here's the Hortons and Bradys.

I hope that even with the recast (and the cast selections for Laura and Mike) we will still be treated with flashbacks. I think it might be a time when someone, maybe Susan Hayes to step out of character and say hey, this is a show, and because of the passage of time, and for story purposes, the roles have been played by other people. During Days 25th anniversary flashbacks included different actors in the same role. Go ahead with it.

The recast may be a means of testing him out to return later as a full-time character. Which would be nice, since he is a legacy character and would be played by a seasoned soap actor.

As for the recasts in flashbacks, I've seen several shows use flashbacks of multiple actors in roles. I think they have figured out we are smart enough to know the difference. The first one I can recall was the 25th Anniversary of Another World in 1989, which had clips of three or four Jamie Frames, and two Rachels and Steves. An especially funny one happened when OLTL's Blair (played by blond Kassie DePaiva) flashed back to her marriage to Asa when Blair was played by a dark-haired Eurasian woman. The "puzzled" look on DePaiva's face was priceless.

Days did this with the Christmas special honoring 9-11 a few years ago. In it, the actors step out of character and directly address themselves and the audience. In one scene, Susan Hayes comments to Kristian Alfonso about the Hope character and then flashes back to Hope as a child and clearly not KA. Days can do this but the fans are going to have to be able to separate Frances Reid and Alice Horton.

On the flip side, Laura has been 'deaged' a lot too.

Though there would be flashbacks with Jaime Lyn Bauer (Laura #05) in the role, Laura was in her twenties when she first appeared on DOOL in '66 (with Floy Dean originating the role).

Why are Abe and Lexie in the picture? And Justin? Where's Mike? And if the Brady's have to be included, where are Roman and Sami and ALL her brats?

If they bring Carrie back and not give her a scene with Anna I'm going to be furious. I honestly can't remember the last time Carrie, Roman, and Anna were all in a scene together.

There has never been a scene with an adult Carrie and Anna.
