Interesting. Thanks, Snarky. Strange that she would do Cleopatra if the Suddenly, Last Summer experience wasn't good. Hard to turn down all that money, I guess.

    Yes.

lol at the comparison b/w Liz and Estelle Getty's Golden Girls character. Yes....sometimes the Dame doesn't know when to stop talking.

I'm not sure if you've seen this Karin:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/uAeWTzlAMgc&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/uAeWTzlAMgc&color1=0xb1b1b1&color2=0xcfcfcf&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I'm not a Lucy fan, so for me, this is only slightly better than seeing Farrah Fawcett and Lee Majors on The Brady Bunch Hour in the 1970s. The hand thing is an old gag, but Liz and Richard play it well enough. Here's an accompanying story I found to go with it:

One of Lucy's many guest-star coups was a rare television appearance in 1970 by Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor on Here's Lucy.

Surprisingly, the Burtons approached Lucy at a party with the idea of being guest-stars on her show and the result was a very funny episode.

A script was rushed into production by longtime (but long gone) Lucy writers Bob Carroll and Madelyn Davis. They reworked a gag they had written for both I Love Lucy and The Lucy Show - Lucy gets Elizabeth Taylor's ring stuck on her finger before it has to be presented at a gala party that evening.

All wasn't happy on the set. Conflict arose early when Lucy suggested Richard Burton read his lines a bit stronger. The great Shakespearean actor responded by shouting his lines all through the dress rehearsal. He wrote in his memoirs, "I loathe Lucy!" The filming went on without a hitch, however.

That episode, the first for the 1970-71 season, was the highest rated program on any network for the premiere week and the second highest rated Lucy episode ever.

"Does the word 'amputation' ring a bell?" lol

Taylor also had director approval, and would only say "Yes" to George Stevens (who was busy with his own elephantine catsrophe, THE GREATES STORY EVER TOLD, or Mankiewicz who turned them down several times). Despite Mank's treatment of her, she knew his quality of work -- or perhaps CLEO was Taylor's revenge, because it almost killed him and nearly destroyed his reputation!

I recall Elizabeth complaining to Johnny Carson about how Lucy would scream at everybody on the set all the time.

Hey Karin, will PM you soon about my time as Sir laurences dresser.

It was a big surprise to everyone when Burton died because he was supposed to be off the booze at the time, but on the night he died John Hurt was at his house and they were both allegedly drinking quite heavily. Burton was quite happily married at the time to a continuity girl he met on a film set called Sally (cant remember her maiden name) who was, I hear, very nice.

    Hi again,

Jessie, thanks for the great photos and for posting the links to the videos. You are right Yiota's Cleopatra video is beautiful but I love her video of The Sandpiper even more. :)

I also enjoyed the other photo video...

I saw you have found my youtube channel. So have you had a look at any of my Elizabeth & Richard Music videos yet?

If not I can recommend you to have a look at this one:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKWwBW3De6E

and for all of you who have picked "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" here you can watch my video about that movie. It's set to the song "Games" by Lisa Hartman so it's an extra plus for Knots fans! :D

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/n3eGsFXX1B8&hl=sv_SE&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/n3eGsFXX1B8&hl=sv_SE&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Marky, thanks a lot for the beautiful collage from "Suddenly Last Summer", I agree that Elizabeth looks stunning in it, especially for being in B & W.
Thanks also for the other photos...

It would suck if they had destroyed the Cleopatra footage. If that really is the case I bet FOX really regrets it though as it must be worth millions!

lol about the old thread on the Dynasty board. It was funny. Especially how some Dynasty diehards were totally convinced that Joan Collins was more beautiful than Elizabeth Taylor. No offense to Joan who is a beautiful lady too but she and Elizabeth can't be compared. Besides I think the ladies are sorta friends. I read in Joan's autobiography that she was a guest at Elizabeth's 55th Birthday party and also that she had been invited to other parties back in the 1960s when everyone knew about Elizabeth & Richard except Eddie Fisher and that it had been sort of embarrassing...
I also went lol at the remark that Eddie Fisher looked like a Freddie Prinze Jr. look a like...I had never made the connection but when I read it I could see there were some resemblances in terms of looks! :D

I also remember her brain surgery...I think it was in 1997 right before her 65th birthday. I remember reading in a women's magazine that the first thing Elizabeth was reported saying after coming to after the surgery was "Ah I've had plenty of those" in reference to a woman's diamond wedding ring and then I just smiled since I knew that she was going to be fine. :D
I have no clue how the surgery affected her and if there are "after effects" but either way I'm just glad that she keeps beating the odds and are still with us...

Minx, thank you so much for posting the clip of the Burtons at Lucy show. It is hilarious! lol
I had seen it before but on youtube but never the whole episode. Still after seeing the clip I understood this guest appearance of Elizabeth's on "The Nanny" in the 1990s so much better:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmgaULJYrFo

    Have you seen that one?
If not it's funny and given the intertextuality between the shows it all makes sense. Still it is not as funny as the Lucy appearance though...I think that one shows what great comedy actors Elizabeth & Richard were and I think it's a shame they didn't do more comedy movies together. They had a knack at those things as anyone who has seen "Taming of the Shrew" can tell! lol

Thanks also for the link to the Carson clip. I had not seen that one before. :)
    I'm also a pisces btw...

From what I read in the Garson Kanin book about Tracy & Hepburn, Kate and Elizabeth got along okay on the set of "Suddenly Last Summer". Kate was surprised that Elizabeth wasn't a glamour queen but a professional actress and respected her as such. But she also noted that Elizabeth was reserved and hard to become personal with. So I guess that means they had a mutual respect for each other as far as their work was concerned but they weren't friends...

Also as for Mankiewicz, there is a rumor in the new Elizabeth Taylor book "How to be a moviestar - Elizabeth Taylor in Hollywood" by William Mann that he and Elizabeth had an affair during the filming of "Suddenly Last summer"

Not sure if there's any truth to the rumor though, but apparently it is something that Mankiewicz told people. Not sure if it was in a joking fashion or seriously.

Either way I guess he and Elizabeth must have gotten along or why else would she choose him as director of "Cleopatra" ?

Mike, thanks, I look forward to receiving your PM. :)
I can imagine what a shock it must have been when Richard died. After all he was only 58... :(
Burton's fourth and final wife was named Sally Hay when he married her in 1983. Here she is pictured below with Richard and Elizabeth and Victor Luna who was Elizabeth's finacé at the time...

lol for some reason I don't think she and Elizabeth got along...
Like this picture shows Elizabeth would have been perfect for a guest stint on Dynasty though! :D

On a serious note, I read in Richard Burton's brother Graham's book that Sally forbid Elizabeth to attend Richard's funeral. I think that was unfair in the sense that Elizabeth & Richard had been a part of each other's lives for over 20 years and Sally & Richard only got two years together...

Still I am sure she was a good influence on Richard in the sense that she kept him on the wagon most of the time...also I am grateful to her for making parts of Richard's diaries public by letting Melvyn Bragg use them for his book. it really makes for some interesting reading and gives you a chance to get to know who Richard was a little more... :)
And the diaries also showed how deeply he loved Elizabeth. I really do believe she was the love of his life even though they were so destructive together they couldn't make it work...

And finally here's a couple of more pictures:

This one is from February 1976.

Private Lives in 1983. Anyone lucky enough to see that one?
Unfortunately I was too young then to even know who they were...

And finally...another wedding photo from 1964...

I love the way she looks at him in this one...

    Take care,
    Love:
    Karin.

Please share that story with everyone, Mike. I'd really enjoy hearing about it.

Sorry to say, I boycotted "The Nanny" when it was on, Karin. I secretly hoped it would fail so Charles Shaughnessy would return to my favorite Soap Opera and reunite my favorite Soap couple. It didn't happen. He had a hit show and went on to provide the voice for an animated fish. I saw it as a sign that both he and I were meant for greater things in this world and I stopped watching daytime TV. lol

    You're welcome. I like fish. :)

What guy wouldn't tell a story like that, true or not, if he got that close to her? ;)

    Hi again,

Minx, lol about boycotting "The Nanny". Since you wanted him to return to the daytime soap. Which soap was it you saw?
I don't ususally watch Daytime soaps but did get stuck on Bold & The Beautiful for a while when I tuned in to see Patrick Duffy's guest stint...
Anyway "The Nanny" was actually an enjoyable show. I liked it :)
So what did you think of Elizabeth's guest stint on it?

Assuming you watched the clip on youtube I linked to...

Marky, I understand your curiousity about Mike's experiences of working with Laurence Olivier. So far I am also curious. But I look forward to that PM... :D

Jessie, thanks a lot for the pictures. I love how the last one has an air of everyday life about it...
Thanks also for all your feedback on my videos on youtube. I am so glad that you enjoy them. :)
So far I have made the following music video tributes to Elizabeth & Richard:

    1. "On again, off again" by Julie & Ludwig (mixes clips from different movies they made together)
    2. "I want to spend my lifetime loving you" by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena (Cleopatra)
    3. "The Shadow of your smile" by Shirley Bassey and Vic Damone (The Sandpiper)
    4. "If you see her, if you see him" by Reba McEntire & Brooks and Dunn (Divorce his, divorce hers)
    5. "Games" by Lisa Hartman (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf)
6."Stop running away from love" by Carola (The Taming of the Shrew)
    7. "Believe" by Carola (mixes 25 of Elizabeth's movies, including some she made with Richard)
8."I don't wanna miss a thing" by Aerosmith (mixed clips from movies and documentaries)
    9. "Sign of the times" by Europe (Boom)
    10. "Broken in two" by Sanna Nielsen (mixed clips from movies and documentaries)
    11. "You're my everything" by Santa Esmeralda (mixed clips from movies and documentaries and pics)

then I have also made the following videos about Elizabeth only:

    12. "Us" by Celine Dion (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof)
    13. "Still Beautiful" by Jessica Simpson (Giant)
    14. "Fragile" by Delta Goodrem (Raintree County)
    15. "Elizabeth I love you" by Michael Jackson (clips from her career and friendship with MJ)
    16. "Gloria" by Carola (BUtterfield 8)

and I still have ideas for more! :)

Anyway let's move on to some more photos...

Elizabeth & Monty in "Raintree county". Anybody likes this movie?
I absolutely love it. It's my favorite of the ones she did together with Monty...

with Jimmy Dean and Rock Hudson from "Giant". I love this movie a lot. :)
It sort of reminds me a bit of...DALLAS! :D

In love in Italy...note her eye make up like Cleopatra's...

Twenty years after Cleopatra and even though they are both with others, on the stage the sparks flies in "Private Lives"... I so wish they'd filmed this performance as I would have loved to see it! :(

In 1969 oin the Kalizma. I wonder what ever happened to that boat?
I mean the last I read Brad Pitt had bought it for Jennifer Aniston. But since they've split up I wonder who kept it or if they sold it? lol

And finally here's a youtube video, a friend of mine made, with some interview clips of Elizabeth where she talks about Richard and some other things:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/giKaLefM7Ck&hl=sv_SE&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/giKaLefM7Ck&hl=sv_SE&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

I can recommend the other videos too as pretty much his whole channel is dedicated to Elizabeth! :)

I really love this music video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bc3XsCuKOh0

And well that's all for now,

    Take care,
    Love:

    Hi Everyone,

Jessie, thank you so much for the pictures and the feedback on my videos. I am so glad that you enjoy watching them and you are right Elizabeth & Richard's screen kisses were great. Too bad the camera tended to cut so early in the 1960s though...
I don't think any screen kisses were allowed to be more than 10 seconds back in the days...lol if even that...does anyone know what the exact seconds that the censors allowed?

Also I borrowed a couple of books from my University library with pictures in them. So I thought I'd share some I scanned with you all. The first ones are from a biography from 1961 which was interesting to read due to that it has more details about the first 30 yeras of her life than the latter ones.

I had never seen this one before...

I think the text under this picture contradicts their facial expression as they do not look all that happy...

I love this photo. It's cute.

Then now a few photos from the book "The films of Elizabeth Taylor":

I thought it was about time I post one with her and Richard... :)
I think this one was from the academy award reherssal dinner in 1970...

Even as a child she was stunningly beautiful...

Then finally a friend of mine found some movie posters online the other day. So I thought I'd share them with you as well. The titles are in Swedish but I think you will know which movie is which from the photos, right?

    Het strand = Hot beach

På Kvällen den sista dagen = In the evening of the last day

Så tuktas en argbigga = How to tame a shrew

and well I think that will have to be all for tonight. :)

Does anyone know what the movie posters looked like in other countries or what the movies were called in other languages?

    Take care,
    Love:
    Karin.
    x

    Hi Karin.
Thanks for your comments, and I do love all your youtube videos.
Thanks for posting the lovely photos , they are great.
Here is a article, I saw , thought you might like to read it.

Roman Candles Doused, Liz, Dick to Seek Divorce
    Wednesday, August 1, 1973

    By Robert Crane

    UPI
After of 9 years of marriage, Elizabeth Taylor and Dick Burton call it quits.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who tried a Roman reconciliation to rekindle the spark of their sputtering marriage, yesterday gave up and directed their New York attorney to file papers for divorce.

Their decision, announced through family spokesman John Springer, was said to be "mutually agreed upon" following a 17-day separation and 11 days attempting reconciliation in Rome. Springer said there were "no third parties" involved and that Burton's reportedly heavy drinking habits were "not a factor."

In separate telephone conversations from Rome, where 11 years ago they met on a movie set, the Burtons reportedly told their attorney that they are "very amiable toward each other" and have not yet agreed upon grounds for divorce. "Most likely, it will be incompatibility or something of the sort," said Springer.

The Burtons had been stayingat the Italian villa of film producer Carlo Ponti and Sophia Loren since getting together again on July 20. friends who visited them five days ago came away believing their nine-year marriage was on the mend.

Signs of a renewed rift developed over the weekend, however, when Miss Taylor, who is beginning a movie, moved out and checked into the Grand Hotel in Rome.

By yesterday, Springer said, the two had agreed to a divorce and asked their attorney, Aaton Frosch, to "take the required steps toward legally concluding their marriage." Each spoke by phone with Frosch. He is to file papers in Switzerland, where the Burtons are legal residents.

The marriage between two of the screen's dominant personalities took place March 15, 1964, after months of rumors while they filmed "Cleopatra" in Rome.

For Miss Taylor, who Burton considered "the most beautiful woman in the world," the marriage was her fifth. Burton had been married once before.

They have an adopted daughter, Maria, 11, three children by Miss Taylor's previous marriages and two by Burton's. Springer said they had not discussed with him custody of the children or the disposition of their estates. He added, however, that "they're not going to fight each other."

Miss Taylor's previous husbands were Conrad Hilton, Jr., Michael Wilding, Michael Todd and Eddie Fisher, from whom she obtained a divorce March 5, 1964, clearing the way for her marriage to Burton. The actor's first wife, Sybil, now Mrs. Jordan Christopher, divorced Burton in Mexico Dec. 16, 1963.

Marriage Quotes About the Marriage of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton:
Richard: "I just suddenly found myself with Elizabeth again. What the devil was I thinking of? She wanted to get married again. I didn't. But I married her again all the same. What Liz wants, she gets ... I found her irresistible, and in the end I found myself on one knee -- literally -- proposing to her. I'd actually stopped drinking by then, so I should have been sober enough to know what I was doing, but I didn't. So after she accepted, I got drunk ... I knew it was over before it had begun."

Elizabeth: "Well, we got it all out on the set and we'd go home, have dinner with the children, play word games with them, and learn our lines after dinner, and go to sleep ... It was very cathartic, too, because we would get all our shouting and balling out on the set and go home and cuddle."

Elizabeth: "I love Richard Burton with every fiber of my soul but we can't be together."

Richard describing his first sight of a 19-year-old Elizabeth Taylor: "She was so extraordinarily beautiful that I nearly laughed out loud. She ... [was] famine, fire, destruction and plague ... the only true begetter. Her breasts were apocalyptic, they would topple empires before they withered ... her body was a miracle of construction ... She was unquestionably gorgeous. She was lavish. She was a dark, unyielding largesse. She was, in short, too bloody much ... Those huge violet blue eyes... had an odd glint... Aeons passed, civilizations came and went while these cosmic headlights examined my flawed personality. Every pockmark on my face became a crater of the moon."

    Hi again,

Thanks for the photos and all the information Jessie. The article was interesting to read in deed. :)

It seems like breaking up was difficult for them in the sense that they kept getting back together again after their separations in 1973 before finally divorcing in 1974... :(

Which reminds me of something I read in a book called "Richard & Elizabeth" from 1977 by Lester David and Jhan Robbins. I read that for their 10th wedding anniversary Richard had bought her a bunch of orchids for every room in their house in Mexico but that since they weren't there at that date all the flowers had died by the time they got there! lol
I think it's sort of a funny story in one sense and at the same time I guess it can be seen as a sign of things to come...

What's also obvious from all the information you posted is that his longest marriage was to Sybil wheras hers was with him. Ironically Richard just kept marrying younger and younger women and his marriages lasted shorter for each time... :(

Richard with his first wife Sybil and daughter Kate. :)

Elizabeth & Richard's second wedding. I think you can tell that it's 1970s from their clothes... ;)

Also I wonder why her first four weddings were so covered by the press and there's like films from them and such while when she married Richard there are just the wedding photos?

Perhaps it has something to do with the studio system breaking down and therefore not controlling their stars lives/publicity anymore?

and finally some fanart made by me. :)

    That's all for now,
    Take care,
    Love:
    Karin.

I (l) these two!! The pictures and video are outstanding everyone, thank you :thanks:!! I was in Puerta Vallarta about a year and half ago and actually stood in the bar where Elizabeth and Richard frequented and their pictures are all over the walls there. I felt like I was standing on hallowed ground!

Wow! That is so awesome Diana that you got a chance to visit Puerta Vallarta it's definitely on my list of places I want to go to some day. :D
I can understand the feeling of being at a special place though as I briefly stopped by Notley Abbey (where Vivien Leigh & Laurence Olivier lived) when I was in England last summer and that was really special too! :)

Anyway I'd love to see some photos from Puerta Vallarta, if you don't mind sharing some with us?

The only Richard and Elizabeth related place I've been to is Celigny, the small village in Switzerland where Richard lived and where he is buried. I visited it in 2008 as a stop on my annual camper vacation with my family. No one else was even remotely interested in it. lol
I didn't actually find Richard's grave though, as well I started to walk in the direction of the churchyard but then there was a huge sign saying "private property" so not wanting to intrude I turned around... :(

I don't know which house he lived in either but it was still intersting to have seen the place as it was such a small quiet village. I guess the fact that Richard lived there meant that he valued his privacy...

Also the feeling to know that you were walking around on streets where they'd once been was indescrible. I am sure you know what I mean? :)

Anyway here's some screen caps from what I filmed with my camcorder when I was in Celigny:

And well since my imageshack won't co-operate tonight I guess this will have to be it for now,

    Take care,
    Love:
    Karin.
