    Hi,
I have been a huge Knots landing fan since it first aired in December of 1979. I am a native Southern Californian and grew up just a few miles from the Culdesac Crystalaire Place AKA "Seaview Circle".
I know all of you have heard about the culdesac and where it is located. It was so cool back in the old days. We used to drive up to the culdesac, park our cars a block away, walk up and watch them shoot. The directors and producers were the nicest. They didn't care how long we stayed and watched, as long as we were quiet. It was a blast.
Have you ever wondered about some of the other locations used for Knots?? Well I can tell You!! The Sumner Ranch had 2 locations. When the ranch first appeared in the series as the "Galveston Ranch" it was located in Hidden Valley, which is in the Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks area of Ventura County. It was a white spanish style residence on a huge ranch on Potrero Road. The ranch has a history to it. It was actually Dean Martin's ranch back in the 50's and 60's. Well 2 seasons later, they switched ranches to the one that became the more famous "Sumner Ranch".This is the one with the huge pool and the walls of the house are a white washed distressed brick, with a spanish tile roof. The second ranch is located in Simi Valley at the top of Kuehner Drive. The real name of the Ranch is "Hummingbirds Nest Ranch" It is now used for events such as weddings, corporate parties and horse events. I had the priveledge of touring the ranch. It is absolutely gorgeous!!!! It was originally built in the 1920's. I toured the grounds, pool area and a full tour of the interior of the house. I took tons of photos. They used the exterior of the house and the kitchen for the series. All other rooms in the house were on a sound stage at Sony Studios in Culver City.
Do any of you Knots fans remember Abby's house at the beach in season 8 and 9??? I always loved that house. It was a gorgeous Santa Barbara style spanish house right on the beach!!! Well, little old detective me!!! I found the house!!! Guess What??? You can take a tour of it if you want to!!! That's right, Abby's beach house is the famous "Adamson House" in Malibu California. It is a historical house that is now owned by the state of California. They hold weddings and corporate parties at the house and on the grounds. They give tours of the inside and outside of the house daily. You can look up photos of the house on the web. Just type in Adamson House, Malibu!!
Now for Gary's Ranch!! That is located in Hidden Valley as well. It is right up the road from the original Galveston Ranch in Hidden Valley, which is in the Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks area of Ventura County. It is privately owned an can't be toured. You can't even see it from the street.
Do you all remember the hotel scene where the evil doctor that kidnapped Val's baby's blew his brains out in his car??? That was all filmed in Westlake Village at the Hyatt Westlake Plaza Hotel in the ball room, lobby and in the front and in the parking lot.
Do you remember the season Cliffhanger when Abby is kidnapped in the limousine at the Hotel and Karen is shot?? That sequence was filmed in Santa Monica at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel at the corner of Wilshire and Ocean.
Do any of You remember Laura Avery's real estate career? Well her first real estate office was a tudor styled building that was actually a real estate office in Granada Hills, California. The building is still there and looks the same from the outside. It is now a bank. It is located on Zelzah avenue, one half block north of Chatsworth Street on the right hand side. Several seasons later, she got back into real estate briefly when Greg Sumner finally pulled her away. The second office is still there. It is Knollwood Realty on Balboa Blvd in Granada Hills. It is in a shopping center just 5 blocks from the Culdesac. This shopping center was used constantly in the series throughout the years.
Knots Landing Motors!!! That was actually Crenshaw Ford in Los Angeles. I do not beleive it still exists.
Now, how about the gorgeous Lotus Point?? Ever wonder where that is?? Well folks, it is not in California. Lotus Point is in reality "The Shalisan Lodge" in Oregon. It is a very swanky resort on the central Oregon Coast and is owned by Westin Hotels. They flew the cast up to Oregon and did this whole group of scenes at Shalisan one season, when Lotus Pointe was first opening. They shot aerial shots and lots of exterior stills to use later. After that one time shot filming up there, they used interior sets at Sony Studios and over the years used "Knollwood Country Club and Golf Course" for exterior shooting. The magic of Hollywood!!!
Mack's office exteriors were shot in Century City, which is a section of Los Angeles on Avenue of the Stars off Santa Monica Blvd.
The Sumner Group exteriors were shot in Downtown Los Angeles at a Highrise up the street from the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. The interiors were all done at Sony Studios on a sound stage.
Anyway, In additon to this, I had the priveledge to meet the Cast on February 13, 2010 at the "Hollywood Show" in Burbank. Donna Mills, Joan Van Ark, Michele Lee, Ted Shackelford and Kevin Dobson were all there. I was able to meet all of them and chated in detail with them, got autographs and had several photos taken with them. My favorite being a Cast shot with me in the middle. It was such a kick!!!! They are all so nice and so friendly!!! Great Group. Thats all for know. Love to hear your comments!!!

Hey, thx so much for sharing. That is some very hot information! I guess most of us have been to the cul-de-sac. But for most it was long after the show ended and I didn't know they let fans watch while filming. That must have been an extraordinary experience. Do you happen to have photos of that..?

This is fascinating info, did you have any contact with the cast back in the day during filming? Did they sign something or acknowledge fans like you watching them filming?

    Hi All,
Great hearing from you. I started going up to the culdesac in 1982 in season 3. That is when I discovered where it was located. I do have photos of the houses from 1982 which is how they appeared in the show. Of course they are not digital, so I would have to scan them and post them. They were not real keen on us shooting photos on the culdesac set while they were filming up there. However I do have one photo of Lisa Hartman. This is the story line when she moved out of Val's house to get away from the crazed and controling Joshua (Alec Baldwin) and moved in with Laura Avery (Constance McCashin). There was a scene in front of Laura's house where he got into an altercation with Cathy. Laura Avery and Michael Fairgate jump in to stop it and Laura gets hit and falls to the ground. I have a couple of photos from that scene. After that, no more cameras allowed.
The cast was always really nice. If there was a break and they had time, they would chat with whoever was there. I had brief conversations with Kevin Dobson, Alec Baldwin, Constance McCashin and Joan Van Ark back in the day. The thing was, as soon as they were done with a scene, they got shuttled back to the Knollwood Country Club parking Lot which was a half mile away. That is where they parked the trailers and portable dressing rooms etc. There was more security down there, so you really couldn't hang out and bother the cast. I never got anything signed back then. I made up for it 2 months ago at the Hollywood Show in Burbank. I talked with Ted, Joan, Michele, Kevin and Donna. I had long conversations with Joan Van Ark and Michele Lee. When you talk to Michele for a while, you really see Karen Mckenzie in her. I even mentioned that to her and she laughed and admitted the similarities. I would love to see one more reunion show. Not just the cast talking about the old days, but a T.V. movie type thing bringing us all up to date on what's been happening on the Culdesac!!! I mean really, lots of new story lines could be popping up. After all Bobby and Betsy were born in 1984, that makes them 26 years old now!! Michael Fairgate is 44 and was getting married in "Back to the Culdesac". Nicolette Sheridan is available. She is no longer on Desperate Housewives!!! I had a great story line in mind. I would love to sit down with David Jacobs and run it by him. Wouldn't it be great to bring Knots back? Look at how well desperate housewives is doing? What I thought would be cool would be to do a crossover to bring Knots Landing Back. How about this??? Nicolette Sheridan is back as Paige Matheson. She has to do some business in Fairview and runs into the desperate housewives. Well she is a dead ringer for Edie who was her character on Desperate Housewives. Well you have some characters overlap for a couple of episodes from desperate housewives back to Knots kind of the way Patrick Duffy and Larry Hagman did in the first season of Dallas. The crossover audience would be phenominal!!! I know it is just a fantasy, but wouldn't that just be the coolest??????

Hi Jim, I have really loved reading your facinating post. You were so lucky to get to watch the filming like that, it's so interesting reading where everything was filmed, I also attended the Hollywood Show and had a wonderful experience meeting the cast and making new friends in fellow forum members, infact I visited the Cul de Sac with Camback! Looking to forward seeing your photos.

    Excellent post Jim.

I've been lurking around this forum since God was just a boy and I can honestly say I've rarely come across a post as informative and entertaining as this. I love finding out loads of little interesting pieces of information about my favourite all time TV show and it's great to know that after all these years, there is still loads to uncover.

All I can say is thanks for a great read and if you have any more stories to share, please feel free and tell us more (6)

Great post. I live in Thousand Oaks and frequently shop in Westlake Village, I've passed the Hyatt many times and never knew Knots was ever filmed there.

This is the adress of Garys ranch that was used on the show:

    1464 Hidden Valley Road
    Westfort Ranch
    Knots Landing, Ca. 90145

    Interesting, isn't it? :)

I think it was shown on an envelope you could see in on episode - I don't remember. I wrote that adresse down about 16 years ago when I last watched Knots.

I just tried to find it on Google Earth and this is what I found:

1464 Hidden Valley Road, Westlake Village, Ca. 91361

But sadly enough I can't find Garys ranch. Does anyone else?

Thanks so much for you wonderful information...

What can a real die hard fan say? Knots was my one and only true television love. I watched it like it was my own life, and in many ways it sometimes was. I strangely identified with Karen and her moralistic views. Sid's passing, Laura's passing and the scene where Val turns and sees the babies driving by, or one of them anyhow, was just the best television ever, wasn't it! I never knew Dallas was actually created FROM Knots, who knew? Everyone thought it was the other way around. I grew up to this show and would have killed to be there at the February reunion. Michelle, Kevin, Constance, Donna, Ted, Joan, William, Nicolette, all of you, you made our lives and I lived to see the show or God help me if the VCR didn't work... I would have loved to have met them all. I always wondered why they didn't deal with the 'gay' issue on Knots as it would have been huge for the show, and ground breaking, for sure it was always in the background like a huge part of the fan base truly is. Although I loved and still love Abby, Donna Mills, I hated the one line they gave her once, where she said to Gary or was it Greg, when they were ignoring her... "You'd think I had AIDS or something!" How inappropriate we know that is now! KNOTS had a huge gay following as well that many don't realize, in it's fan base, yet it never dealt with the subject that I ever saw. Thanks for giving us one hell of a great show to grow up to... you walked me through my life from 1979 and into the 90's, and when that final episode aired, "Sayonara!" I thought and still think a part of me died with it.

She actually said "I don't have the plague, y'know," to which Paige said "Too bad". This was from the final episode.

    Thanks!

Thanks so much! I knew where all these things were except The Sumner Group building. Always liked that building and wondered where it was. Thanks to your ifno, using Bing maps I finally found it! It's in the lot that is made up of S Hope ST, Hope Pl, S Grand Ave, & W 4th St. I haven't been able to find the address yet. I never even though about it being right next to the "new" US Bank tower!

Does anyone watch the new show on OWN about Ryan and Tatum O'Neil? Ryan O'Neils house really reminds me of the exterior shots of Gary's house in Malibu. Hmmm.
