Who do you think should have been the second Jock? Steve Forrest is a fine actor, but wasn't the best choice in my opinion. I know he wasn't really Jock, but he was in Miss Ellie's mind for a while...

    Here are my choices...

    1) Kirk Douglas
    2) Jack Palance

    Your opinion?????????

Jack for sure, rough and rugged looking. Kirk would never do a soap.

I always thought Buddy Ebsen would have made a good Jock. Rugged and tough looking (forget his Beverly Hillbillies role). :)

[IMG]I think Steve forrest did a good job, but James Coburn looks more like Jim Davis than Steve did !

That's interesting. Jim Davis died right about the time Buddy wrapped up his Barnaby Jones stint (or maybe a little before)...

If they wanted to make Jock more of a comedian, Denver Pyle looked rugged enough to play the role... But with The Dukes Of Hazzard airing on the same evening, fans might not've liked the same actor playing Jock Ewing and Uncle Jesse...

Denver Pyle was great doing comedy, but he also did a good job on Gunsmoke. He had some rather serious storylines on that show. Great actor!!
  6. Awww, I *love* Buddy Ebsen! He would have been a pretty good choice, I think! ;)

I think Peter Graves might have been a good choice.

A second Jock would have been another disaster like the second Miss Ellie.
  9. Yeah, I know what you mean. I really only wanted to see Jim Davis and Barbara Bel Geddes as Jock and Miss Ellie. It was just totally *not* the same with anyone else in the role, good or bad. :(

It's funny, this thread reminded me of something I thought I had forgotten long ago. I was 7 yrs old when "Dallas" first started and was fully aware of the show from very early on. I remember actually getting Jim Davis and James Coburn mixed up because they were so much alike.

Anyone remember "Monte Walsh" (1970) that had Jack Palance and Lee Marvin as cowboy buddies working for Jim Davis. I haven't seen it in years and had to look it up because I couldn't remember the title. I remember Superstation TBS used to show it a lot. Jim Davis played good hearted trail boss.

And speaking of "Gunsmoke", wasn't James Arness (Peter Grave's brother) briefly considered as a replacement for Jim Davis on the show?

    WWJD?

Steve Forrest became Jock for me when he joined the cast for the Wes Parmalee story. I wish they had gone with it. They didn't rush into it and by the time it was finished I, and many others bought him as Jock.

Yes I totally agree with Afton on this. Although it is cool to imagine who could've played the part. But I think a recast would've been a bad idea. Jock was such a strong character that it would be impossible to match his charisma and strength. Just my opinion. :)

I thought Steve Forrest did a good job as "Jock." He was... how should I say this? ...more acceptable than I thought he'd be.

It would have helped if they gave him boots to make him a bit taller. His height was the only aspect I had trouble getting past.

Jim Davis was the only Jock for me.

It was clear to the writers not a whole lot of viewers were going for Wes Parmalee as Jock, so they backed off....smart move.
