Nah, it was a screw up - people behind the scenes admitted as much.

Yes, The Cattle Baron's Ball is a real event and is often held at Southfork.

And you're right, mistake or not, it suited the position of the Ewings at this point.

Let's be real though, I doubt they had the event deliberately separate from the Oil Baron's Ball. The writers didn't know the original show well at all, I'm sure they thought the fancy social event of the year they'd heard about was the Cattle Baron's Ball.

ETA: Yeah, not deliberate to reflect the change in the Ewing family

Also, this interview provides answers but it's also infuriating to read. I cannot believe someone somewhere at TNT really selected all of these people to write a continuation of such a classic show without also putting in place some very high standards. Like come on, you cannot write a complete character continuation without first understanding the character as it has already been established, it's not original fiction from your mind. Also, they changed history, yet she says they can't :2B:

I know what you mean that part about how they hadn't even watched all of the original show despite the fact that they had almost 3 years between when the show was announced in 2009 and when the pilot aired in 2012 really made me angry. I mean the original show had 356 episodes, so if they had watched one episode/day they would have made it through them in a little over a year. So they really should have done their "homework" better. Their show would have benefited from it and had probably still been on the air if they had only understood that the characters drove the story, not the plots! :2B:

I also remember reading it. Like most other interviews with Cynthia Cidre the interviewer dances to Cynthia's tune. Let's not ask difficult questions for fear we'll never be granted another question & answer session.

    From her first answer to this question;

Looking back at Dallas season one what do you think worked well and is there anything you would have done differently?
Cynthia - I thought the combination of the older generation and the new generation in the same scenes worked well. I liked very much those were not parallel stories but very much integrated into each others lives. The only thing I might have done differently is that we really had very long scripts and sadly had to cut some scenes that were not plot orientated after we shot them. Because there was no time, it has to be 41 and a half minutes and so this season we are trying to write slightly shorter scripts. I end up watching a scene that I completely cut and I'm thinking why did I cut that, it was a beautiful scene but the story has to make sense and you end up cutting the scenes that are purely emotional rather than story driven.

And therein lies the problem with TNT Dallas, plot driven rather than character driven. Sad really. Just proves she was the wrong choice as showrunner for Dallas.

Actually, having watched Cane it *sort of* makes sense that they picked her - it was very family oriented around a business. But it also suffered the same things TNT Dallas did - being plot and crime driven. In Cane it's excuseable because it is it's own thing rather than something that existed before. But yeah, if you like TNT Dallas, you'll like Cane. It pretty much has a somewhat of a proper ending too, unlike TNT Dallas.

If those scenes were actually shot and discarded that's even worse. I wonder if it would have been technically feasible to have edited them into a larger number of episodes. There were only 10 that first season.

One of the scenes that were cut was Sue Ellen confronting Emma and comparing her to Kristin:

This is a great scene that really should've been included - it both included building up characters and referring to history.

It bothers me so much that they didn't make more of an effort with the DVDs. All of those cut scenes would've been easy to include as special features.

Like how often did we see variations of this picture? Yet we got nothing.

I know what you mean, that cut JR/SE dance scene should have been among the deleted scenes on the DVD. It sucks that they never released it to us. :(

I was directed to youtube when someone had uploaded this deleted scene. As others pointed out it was a great throwback to history. Dame Sue Ellen Ewing (knowing her place) giving clueless mistress Emma a taste of what happens to the other woman...floating in the Southfork pool. Loved it!

Nothing has changed between Cliff and the Ewings but it's so much more fun watching these old men at eachother's throats. Thankfully there was nothing gimmickry about it.

JR moves back into Southfork, drama ensues. Who would have thought?
John Ross finds out that it was Rebecca who sent the email to Elena. What's he going to do with that information?

I liked the scene between Bobby and Christopher, it was very emotional.
I find it almost impossible to watch this show without thinking about the classic series, but I don't feel the need to compare them. I'll say it again, Brenda Strong is an excellent choice for the part of Bobby Ewing's wife, and it really feels like her home now.

Of course I remember the discussions about bringing Pam back, but no, please. That wouldn't make any sense.

I to thought Brenda Strong was a good choice to play Bobby's wife. And her scenes (though few and far between) with Linda were a treat to watch.

The young Dallas women are suffering in episode 4.

Christopher treats Elena like dirt, to get her out of his system, but I don't think it's going to work.
John Ross blackmails Rebecca and I think she deserves it but she's so likeable.
    upload_2017-8-12_3-48-36.png
And it's obvious that Tommy is the mastermind behind the scheme - although I haven't figured out what that is exactly.
It looks as if she wants to enjoy her life as Mrs. Ewing and be loved by her husband, and there's nothing wrong with that, but the fact is that without Tommy she wouldn't be Mrs. Ewing.
Hm, there's some serious dilemmas going on here.

JR has already exposed Veronica as an impostor, but he still calls her Marta. But since he doesn't really know her (apart from a little background information) it would be strange if he had started to use her real name, because he's never known her as "Veronica".
Therefore this situation is both logical and illogical.

And if all this isn't mind-boggling enough, I watch JR and Sue Ellen, sitting at a table having a conversation, and I think: how is it possible that this actually happened?

Of course it's Christopher's Nu-Energy Project. Hopefully it will be more successful than uncle Gary's Tidal Wave Energy.

Bobby is furious when he finds out that JR now owns Southfork, but JR cleverly justifies his deed (and the deed) by pretending to blame Cliff, and partially, Bobby too.
This is how he's always managed to confuse his brother, but this time Bobby isn't having any of it.
So much for peace and quiet.

John Ross keeps lying to cover up his previous lies, and Christopher discovers his cousin's sextape (on disc). He could have shown it to Elena when she defended John Ross, but then decides not to because he knows how much it would hurt her. And I think that's the difference between him and John Ross.

The oil from Southfork is being transported by Ryland (Ann's ex-husband - it's a small world, even in Texas) and she asks him to annul his contract with JR.
Apparently they haven't parted on good terms.

    What a bunch!

No, he wants everything! He discovers that it was Rebecca who gave the copy of Aaron Southworth's codicil regarding the mineral rights to Bobby. He wanted to use it as leverage, but what surprises me more is that he knew what he was looking for, while the Ewings remained clueless until Rebecca showed up with that very document.

Harris Ryland is totally kick-ass badass, and now Sue Ellen gets involved with him too.

This battle has a strong sense of to and fro.

The camerawork is outstanding. I've always loved the cosy atmosphere of Southfork, but now it looks very majestic.
    upload_2017-8-15_1-14-32.png

I would be so suspicious if someone showed up with a "thank you!" basket.
    upload_2017-8-15_1-16-31.png

Despite JR and Jock's chauvinism, I think DALLAS could appreciate a talented or intelligent woman e.g. Marilee Stone and Abby Ewing.
But troublesome vixens like Kristin and Veronica usually end up like this:
    upload_2017-8-15_1-24-51.png
John Ross is taken in by the police for questioning.
I guess it's all part of learning the oil business!

It's been a long time since I watched it, but doesn't it change between cast members every other episode? I just think they had the main cast members record "previously on Dallas" and "next on Dallas" so they could use it as they please.

I agree that they really made a lot out of a little with the outside of Southfork considering how tiny in reality it is compared to how it is portrayed on the show.
