What's your opinion of the Cally Harper Ewing storyline?

    Hey all,

You may have seen our posts, we're fans who built a little web site where you can vote on your favorite female Dallas character. It's like a basketball playoffs brackets game, with the women of Dallas. http://www.dallasdivasderby.com

Currently, we're half-way through our Round 1 voting, and we're surprised by one statistic. Cally Harper Ewing is doing pretty well in the popular vote. She's ahead of her match on the site, Kimberly Cryder, and right now looks on-course to make it to Round 2.

Honestly, we're shocked. The introduction of Cally, and the silly story where JR ends up on a chain gang seemed like the end of all things good on the show to us. It just got campy & silly after that, in our opinion.

But what do you think? Was Cally really loved by fans, or is she just doing well because we matched her against Kimberly Cryder in Round 1? How far do you think she'll go?

Thought Haileyville was one of the worst plot lines ever, hated it, Cally was pretty awful - that accent (UGH), acting was weak and she was young enough to be Jrs grandaughter
the fact she married him made me think child snatcher lol
beginning of the end for Dallas and mz cryder gets my vote, could also see her with JR as a more believable "wife/partner/lover" whatever

but Cally - I will pass!

I half expected to see people with bad teeth playing banjos! When you compare it to the great days of Dallas, well there is no comparison!

I loved her and that whole storyline. That is actually the beginning of my favorite period of the show, at the end there. I didn't see it as campy or silly. Just because characters have southern accents and live in the woods doesn't make it any less real. I think if more people stopped and realized it is sort of a bandwagon mentality everyone gets on with the hate in regards to that, more people would drop the overt criticism. It could conceivably happen in a small corrupt town and getting out of it would be that hard-to me it was much more real and identifiable than all the endless business squabbles.

Barbara Fan - We're on the same page! We're not voting ourselves, but totally agree that all things Haleyville signaled the end of the line for Dallas. Who wrote that stuff? It was painful to watch.

Cliff, we're not in any way anti-country or being haters here. In fact lots of good Dallas episodes focused on the south, and rural stories. Loved all that.

It's just that seeing a character like JR, who's taken down foreign governments, caused grown men to kill themselves, and had his way with any woman he wanted, suddenly shackled and on a chain gang, was just sad. He lost all his power as a villain at that point, and became just another guy. It was similar watching him in the mental institution later. He was just weak.

And Cally, it wasn't her accent as much as the age difference, and that she & JR had nothing in common. It felt like from the beginning he never even liked her. Her character never seemed to find her place with the other characters on the show, don't you think?

You know though, we can't deny, she's still climbing in votes on http://www.dallasdivasderby.com

We'll be updating her profile with new bits later today. We can't fight with public opinion.

Vote either way! All are welcome and encouraged! ;-)

I agree with you. Good post! I'm definitely to a country people hater, in fact I just read a novel called "Winter's Bone" that takes place along the Missouri/Arkansas border. The characters are very well written and it's interesting. Hayleyville was just too dumb to take seriously. They didn't have a judge? JR's "trial" was done by a justice of the peace? No lawyer? No phone call? He gets charged for rape for having consensual sex with a 23 year old even though she never even complained or said he raped her or forced her into having sex in any way?

JR and Cally didn't have anything in common. Neither did Ray and Donna and they got divorced too.

    Thank you!

Even as No. 1 JR fan that I am, that was too much! JR and Cally was ridiculous. Child molester alert! Absolutely horrid, IMO. I couldn't take the character seriously and her fake accent haunts me to this day: "Jaaaaaaaayy Arrrrrrrrrree!" Spare me.

The entire Haleyville/Cally storyline was God awful and one of the 3 worst of the entire Dallas series. The Kim Cryder character was MUCH more believable as a match for JR and her character should have been given more mileage on the show. Personally, I voted for Kim without even needing to think about it. She would've been the best match for JR's second wife, IMO.

I think it's because the actress was very likable, it had more to do with her than her actual plotlines, which many people thought were ridiculous- but Cally herself was very watchable, which is probably why she lasted as long as she did.

    This is really interesting everyone.

Have been wondering about how others felt about Cally & Halleyville for a long time. Lots of good points here. After re-watching all of those episodes, it does feel like the bad writing is worst culprit in all of it. And no offense to Cathy Podewell, but when you're trying to keep up with Larry Hagman, Linda Gray, Barbara Bel Geddes, et al, you just need to be a better, more experienced actress. She was clearly young and "green" at the time, and the disconnect between her experience added to this feeling that the other characters were just tolerating her presence there, rather than connecting with her. Maybe the producers chose a "green" actress because Cally was supposed to be young & naive too? Who knows. When you watch the eps together, up against the "glory" years of the show, they just don't hold up, quality-wise.

Do you think we're going to see Cally and/or her son in the new Dallas? Could get interesting.

Anyway, Cally continues to lead over Kimberly Cryder on our site. Their match will be open until next Tues. So if you love her, vote for her; if you hate her, vote for Kimberly Cryder to advance!

I agree with those that say Haileyville was one of the single worst storylines in the series. I like Cathy Podewell as an actress, I felt bad she was saddled with such a sappy, plotline and an unbelievable story.

I think Cally was great. Great actor and she had a really good chemistry with JR... the agedifference made it a bit "dirty" too. And that was a good thing - cause JR was dirty old man!

I don't think Cathy Podewell was that bad. I think it was inevitable she would be compared against Linda Gray and was on a hiding to nothing, basically. The storyline wasn't brilliant, admittedly. But she was better than J Eddie Peck and co.

Cathy could have worked as Cally if the events leading to her marriage to J.R. werent so over the top comicbook/bad soap opera ridden. if J.R. had merely met Cally in the bar and had a one night stand..and she later showed up at southfork , pergnant, it might have been more believeable than the haileyville inbred brothers and good ol' boy law maker junk.
