Interestingly, most people picked Nicki's original version from 1993 instead of the popular remix by Stock & Aitken.

This round took me by surprise. I had a feeling Bonnie might give us our second Full House, but the competition was fierce. All the same, this is a win for the originals for the third consecutive round!!

    Our next song...
    You Keep Me Hangin' On

Suggested by @Willie Oleson, "You Keep Me Hangin' On" is a song written and composed by the songwriting/production team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland.

The single is rooted in proto-funk and rhythm & blues. The song's signature guitar part is said to have originated from a Morse code radio sound effect used before a news announcement and heard by Dozier who integrated the idea into a single.

It first found success when sung by the American Motown group The Supremes in late 1966. "You Keep Me Hangin' On became the group's eighth #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart. It peaked at #8 in the UK Singles Chart.

The rock band Vanilla Fudge covered the song a year later and had a top ten hit with their version. British pop singer Kim Wilde covered "You Keep Me Hangin' On" in 1986. It became the biggest hit of her career, reaching #2 in the UK, #1 in Australia and taking the song back to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in June 1987.

Country music singer Reba McEntire covered the song in 1995, co-produced by Tony Brown and Michael Omartian. Released as a single in 1996, McEntire's rendition was her only dance hit, reaching #2 on Hot Dance Club Play.

The track is one of the more oft-covered songs in the Supremes canon. Other artists to cover the song include: Tom Jones (1967); Wilson Pickett (1969); Lisa Hartman (1979); Precious Wilson & La Mama (1983); The Shadows (1989); Lisa Stansfield (2001); Madness (2005) and The Overtones (2012)

Over eighty versions can be found here. Have a shufty, then come back and list your favourites below.

As always, single song entries won't be counted. Please list up to ten versions with a minimum of three choices. You're very welcome to list more than ten, but only the first ten will be counted, with the maximum ten points going to your #1 choice.

Everyone is very welcome to join in. The more, the merrier. If we could have our choices in by Friday night that would be super. Have fun!!

No need to Hang On any longer
    Here are the results

Five of us voted on thirty one versions by twenty nine unique artists. Only four of those got more than ten points, with a couple of artists vying for the top spot.

    This is how we voted....

    2. Kim Wilde - 31
    3. Lisa Hartman - 18
    4. Reba McEntire - 16
    5. Aretha Franklin / Gilbert Montagné / Jackie Wilson - 10

The originals take it for the fourth consecutive round. A predictable win, perhaps, but for quite some time while I was counting them up it seemed like Kim had it in the bag.

Thanks to all who took the time to vote!! :) Now onwards and upwards to the next challenge...

    Our next song...
    Without You

Suggested by @Emelee, "Without You" is a song written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of British rock group Badfinger and first released on their 1970 album No Dice.

Ham had written a song originally titled "If It's Love". The opening lyrics "Well I can't forget tomorrow when I think of all my sorrow. I had you there but then I let you go" referred to watching his girlfriend leave as he stayed to write the song having promised to take her out. But Ham wasn't happy with the chorus. Meanwhile, Evans was in a tempestuous relationship with his future wife, Marianne. After she temporarily left him, Evans wrote a song called "I Can't Live". The chorus for "I Can't Live" was merged with Ham's verse for "If It's Love" and became "Without You". Neither Ham nor Evans considered song to have much potential at the time Badfinger recorded it for their 1970 No Dice album. Badfinger's recording of the song, which is more brusque than later versions, was not released as a single in Europe or North America at the time.

In 1972, writers Ham and Evans received the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. Paul McCartney once described the ballad as "the killer song of all time".

Both writers of the song later committed suicide due to legal and financial issues. Evans's suicide came from a dispute over songwriting royalties for "Without You". In 1983, following an argument with his bandmate Joey Molland over the royalties, Evans hanged himself.

Harry Nilsson heard Badfinger's recording of "Without You" at a party, initially mistaking it for a Beatles song. He covered the song in 1971. The single was released in October 1971, and it spent four week at #1 on the U.S. pop chart and five weeks at #1 on the UK pop chart early in 1972. It went to #1 in several other countries, including Australia (for five weeks), Ireland (three weeks) and New Zealand (two weeks).

Mariah Carey's version - based on Harry Nilsson's arrangement - was released in the United States on 24 January 1994: just over a week after Nilsson had died from a heart attack on 15 January 1994. "Without You" remains Carey's biggest hit across Europe. It became her first UK #1 single, a position at which it debuted and remained for four weeks. It topped the charts in Italy, Germany (four weeks), Ireland (five weeks) Austria (eight weeks), Sweden (eight weeks) Switzerland (ten weeks) and the Netherlands (twelve weeks). Zealand for one week.

    The song has been recorded many times. Well known covers include those by: Shirley Bassey (1972 and in Spanish as "Sin Ti", 1989); Heart (1977); Pandora ("Desde el dia que te fuiste", 1992);

The song is often covered by TV talent contestants, including Leona Lewis and Kelly Clarkson on their respective talent shows. Valentina Hasan's performance - soon dubbed "Ken Lee" after her mispronunciation of "Can't Live," - became a YouTube hit, parodied and remixed by many fans.

You'll find over ninety versions here. Take a peek and list your favourites below.

As always, single song entries won't be counted. Please list up to ten versions with a minimum of three choices. Feel free to list more than ten but remember only the first ten will be counted, with the maximum ten points going to your #1 choice.

Everyone is very welcome to join in. The more, the merrier. If we could have our choices in by Friday night that would be super.
