They dropped Jamie and Jack in out of nowhere. They could have figured something out.
I think she did it because she was hurt. People say things they shouldn't out of desperation.
it’s preposterous that after precisely zero mentions in the first several years of the series, all of a sudden there was a second Ewing there in the wildcatting days that were the basis for the entire premise of the show... just as an excuse to introduce the replacement “hot girl” from Three’s Company! (at least Bobby got to make a series later with the original)
If they had to retcon the Jock/Digger story with Jason just to introduce Jamie, you’d think they could have done better with casting than Suzanne Somers’ failed replacement.
I would have had Donna play Ellie’s sister, Miss Nellie.
They should have given what BBG asked for -- a relaxed work week (think about how brief Reed's work week became when they kept cutting her back in the scenes) and her raise (which she presumably got when they brought BBG back). Or at least put Ellie on ice, in a medical facility, until the terms could be worked out.
Donna Reed should have done FALCON CREST during the 84/85 season instead, as the dithery sister of Lana Turner, who descends on the Tuscany Valley after the air crash death of her son, Cliff Robertson. Maybe that would have even allowed Reed to live.
Maybe they did it to explain the difference between BBG and DR’s Ellie in a tongue in cheek way.
A good observation. The dubbing clearly doesn't help either. In fact the scene now feels rather amateurish by Dallas standards. Instead of the new Miss Ellie being introduced in a subtle way it was if the writers and producers showed intent on giving everyone the one finger salute. I cannot imagine what Barbara Bel must have been feeling sitting at home watching that scene.
Apparently, she didn't. Despite the mythology that she sat jealously watching another actress in her role and then angrily picked up the phone and demanded her part back.
Perhaps not but given Dallas was still the hottest series on television you'd expect a close family member or friend of Barbara to bring it to her attention. I'd feel absolutely gutted knowing I had put my heart and soul into a role (and winning an Emmy no less) only to watch someone snaffle the role right under my feet. And all because of what? Lighter duties? A share in the pot of gold Dallas was bringing in?
The intro scene was campy. And why is Hagman holding Gray up as they walk?
yeah, at least it’s often plausible that the dialogue could have been recorded live (I don’t think the live audio is used often if ever, is it?), but the airport scene isn’t even in the ballpark - they seriously mailed that one in.
On second thoughts I could envisage Donna playing Herbert Wentworth's spinster sister. I see this character as being an ice queen, something I believe could have suited Donna's persona.
I pictured her as Cherie Simmons-Southworth, the wife of Garrison, who was seen in Dallas: The Early Years. If the Southworths would have known Garrison was alive, Southfork Ranch would have gone to him and not Miss Ellie. Garrison only returned to die there and left things as they were. But would Cherie have thought the same way? I think she never divorced Garrison, but ran away, pregnant of course. And she would bring her offspring back to Southfork to claim the ranch, who was rightfully hers.
Why do people say that Reed was an ice queen? Fabares and Petersen said that she was a wonderful person and she did a lot of charity work and worked for numerous peace causes in the 60’s/70’s.
Were we talking about real life?
It was the money - my guess is that they would have agreed to the shorter week if it hadn’t been accompanied by a request for a raise, too.
But it was probably when her contract was up. And they knew about her heart surgery. Instead we got a mess which was obvious as soon as it was announced, and we're still talking about 35 years later.
They probably hired Donna Reed -- and then extended her contract by two years -- because they thought she was healthier than BBG and might last longer.
If Reed has stayed, the show would have been in trouble when she died in ‘86. Would BBG return to take the late Reed’s place? Kill Ellie off finally? Miss Ellie Mark 3??
I'd be curious to know if it was the Miss Ellie recast or Bobby spinning in the shower which infuriated viewers the most. Has a thread/pole ever been conducted on Soapchat between these two colossal errors? It could be argued how both bookend each other.
Reed made a HUGE mistake in trying to get the new season without her from being filmed. In one fell swoop, she alienated EVERYONE from actors to writers and producers to cameramen, etc. I know she was angry, but that blew any and all credibility hat she may have had with the cast. I cannot imagine the tension on the set had she managed to prevent the new season from being filmed and then went back to the role!!!!!!
