    Texas

    Tex 2.jpg

Suggested by Willie back on October 6th 2016! :eck:

Texas are a Scottish pop rock band from Glasgow. They were founded in 1986 by Johnny McElhone (formerly of the bands Altered Images and Hipsway) and Sharleen Spiteri on lead vocals. Texas made their performing debut in March 1988 at the University of Dundee. They took their name from the 1984 Wim Wenders movie Paris, Texas.

Despite the success of Southside, the follow-up albums Mothers Heaven (1991) and Ricks Road (1993) were less successful, peaking at #32 and #18 respectively in the UK.

The band's fortunes changed in 1997 with the release of their White on Blonde album which entered the UK Albums Chart at number one and became their biggest seller. To date it has been certified six-times platinum in the UK.

As of 2017, Texas' sales were 40 million records and they have had thirteen UK top ten singles, three UK number one albums and eight UK top ten albums, including their ninth studio album, Jump on Board which was released in May 2017, debuting atop of the Scottish Albums Charts and within the top ten in France, the United Kingdom and Belgium.

I would have put money on that if someone had asked me to guess and not only that, as soon as I read your post here I went back to double-check.

That's how much I thought it was LL who mentioned them. I'm sure LL has mentioned them at some point, maybe it was before the great crash of '16

Gosh! Gosh! Gosh! I've never been a fan of Texas, there was just something that never clicked with me. I even got to a point where I would switch over the radio or TV if they started singing. There was one song I liked "Say What You Want" which is what I thought was going to be my number one. I also thought "I Don't Want a Lover" would have been in second place as I better memories of that tune. Now I found myself totally and utterly pulled in by their greatest hits. its been an absolute shocker for me.

    Roxette
    R1.jpg
As always with Soap Chat, when we lose another loved musician we celebrate their music with our very own top ten

Roxette was a Swedish pop rock and soft rock duo, consisting of Marie Fredriksson (vocals and keyboards) and Per Gessle (vocals and guitar). Formed in 1986, the duo became an international act in the late 1980s, when they released their breakthrough album Look Sharp! Their third album Joyride, which was released in 1991, became just as successful as its predecessor. Roxette went on to achieve nineteen UK Top 40 hits and several US Hot 100 hits.

    R3.jpg

Their songs "It Must Have Been Love" and "Listen to Your Heart" continue to receive wide radio airplay, with both singles recently receiving awards from BMI for achieving five million radio plays. They have sold an estimated 75 million records worldwide, with over 10 million in certified units from Germany, the US and the UK, achieving gold and platinum certifications for Joyride and Look Sharp! in all three regions.

    32.jpg

They are Sweden's second-best-selling music act after ABBA

I love it when this happens.

I know I've changed my mind about so many familiar artists , along with learning about new ones. If it wasn't for SC and these music threads I would have been missing out on so much great music :D

    1. Wish I Could Fly
Both the sound and the lyrics give it a very cinematic feel. Too good for Disney but maybe not cool enough for Bond.
And as a Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (An Eagle After Midnight) it's also Roxette's most ABBA-ish song.

    2.
Excuse Me, Sir, Do You Want Me To Check On Your Wife
The way the story fluctuates between first and third person (and second person too, come to think of it) makes it a little confusing.
I also feel the story is too edited, but maybe I'm supposed to read between the lines. But who is Roxette in this story? A doctor, a nosy neighbour, one of her lovers? Did he kill his wife?
I would have preferred this to be a full-on conversation song like Joe Dolan & Kelly Marie's Sister Mary.
Nevertheless, I'm intrigued by the fake guitarist in an 80s band who has to sugar her tea with love. I like the title and and the song sounds really great!

    3. Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way
I think that many of the Roxette songs are euro bubblegum pop disguised as pop-rock or ballads, and it becomes even more apparent when they do it too seriously.
But there's no pretence about the subject "penetration-or-not", and at the same time it does seem like a big deal. It's a Sex Power Ballad with some 70s disco strings to top it off.
Also, I could pretend to mishear it as The Hole Way to make it more LGBT-friendly.

    4. Stars
I just love the cheesy but catchy hook of Stars, it sounds like a faster version of Dave's Dansez Maintentant. I prefer the Almighty remix because it doesn't have the syrupy children's choir vocals.

    5. How Do You Do!
Oasis meets Pet Shop Boys meets Belinda Carlisle. Sometimes I wonder if there's something in that Nordic air that makes them a little crazy, but hey, if that's what it takes to make a good pop song then who am I to judge?

    6. The Look
I usually avoid these Best Of The Eighties hits but it's a well-crafted pop song, maybe with a few Prince influences here and there?

    7. Sleeping In My Car

    8. Jefferson
This would be great for a South Park soundtrack album (if Jefferson was a SP character)

    9. She's Got Nothing On (But The Radio)
Sometimes I struggle with Per Gessle's vocals and this is also not his best performance but it's so terribly catchy, kinda like Video Killed The Radio Gaga Star.

    10. The Centre Of The Heart
A shameless Savage rip-off, but Pleasure and Scruples can't always be best friends.

    11. The Sweet Hello, The Sad Goodbye
    12. It Must Have Been Love (not really my cup of tea, but maybe it was the best song for MF's vocals)
    13. Un Dia Sin Ti (they should have given it to Enrique Iglesias)
    14. Fading Like A Flower
    15. Joyride
