    Hi Everyone,

    I stumbled across this list:

    https://www.farandwide.com/s/europe...rce=tab&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=dailymail-row

I think it might have been compiled by an American who never have even visited most of the countries they have ranked.

    What's your opinion about it?
Do you agree what it says about your country or not?

Also for those of you who have visited these places, how would you rank them?

    Take care,
    Best wishes:
    Karin

I can't take these kinds of lists seriously (or even laughingly); sure, they show you what that one person "thinks" but that's about it. But I did jump quickly to #1 (won't spoil it) and I can tell you that it is described as a place so wonderful, that "people spend very little time feeling sad and depressed about the future" whereas that country's suicide rate is much greater than countries ranked lower in their list, some much lower even.

But even these other, weightier lists compiled from transnational organizations, discussing things from productivity to transparency to corruption to environmental protection to what have you are interesting, but they would not affect whether I would travel somewhere.

I wouldn't agree with this list or the need to make such a list. I've had the good fortune to visit about eighteen of these countries and I found each one unique in their own way.

Obviously. Poland, Italy & Greece so high up while Norway, UK, Finland & Iceland so low on the list is a joke. Maybe checking the countries economies and how the most poor inhabitants have it in each country would be a good idea?

That's not true. It's a myth. Check suicide rate statistics. People keep on saying the nordic countries have the highest suicide rates in the world, but that's fake news. The country at #1 is not high up on that list.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rate

Sweden had one of the highest suicide rates back in the 1960s - of the developed countries in the world. But not since then. It was over 50 years ago, but many people seem to think we're number 1 on that list, and still in 2019. We are below avarage of the OECD countries in the suicide statistics.

Another reason why this list is clearly ridiculous. I mean, you guys don't even have mountains! Or even hills!!

Calling it a myth and fake news is not enough to counter the numbers.
If you had checked the list you quoted, you would see the rate for Denmark (#1 in that website with best countries). Denmark's rate is 9,2 per 100.000 (Sweden's is much higher at 11,7 btw, and it is the 5th highest in the EU). Compare that to the rates of Greece (3,8--the lowest in all of Europe), Bosnia (5,6) Italy (5.6) or Albania (5,6). The website was about Europe, and my statement is true. I repeat it here: " that country's suicide rate is much greater than countries ranked lower in their list, some much lower even." So how is Denmark's suicide rate not greater than Greece's, Italy's, Bosnia's, or Albania's? How is it fake news?

Oh, come on. Here is what the list's creator said: "You must be doing something right when your country is known for its wooden shoes, mild cheeses, legal cannabis and insanely large flower industry."

Are we interpreting the list so very differently? Denmark is on spot 26 of the European countries. Do you really think that is high up? I don't.

Besides, looking at suicide rates is NOT a good way to check if a country is good/happy or not. Because in that case, countries like Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Lebanon & Kuwait must be totally AWESOME countries!!!! Such happy people who don't commit suicide.

It seems more likely that religion & culture are factors when it comes to suicide. They may be half broken, but suicide isn't an acceptable choice to make. Think of the shame it will bring on the entire family, if you are of a certain religion or culture. Suicide is a MAJOR sin in islam afterall. In the Roman Catholic Church, suicide is a sin. In Orthodox theology, suicide is a betrayal of God's gift of life. For Conservative Protestants, suicide is a sin because it's self-murder. And then there are the much more secularized countries... Countries where suicide is "only" sad & tragic - but in no way a sinful act against God.

European suicide rates per 100.000 people:

    1. Russia 26.5
    2. Lithuania 25.7
    3. Belarus 21.4
    4. Ukraine 18.5
    5. Latvia 17.2
    6. Belgium 15.7
    7. Estonia 14.4
    8. Finland 13.8

    15. Sweden 11.7
    16. Croatia 11.5

I think you need to look at the quote from the list to which I responded with the suicide rate. It specifically talked of the country (Denmark) where "people spend very little time feeling sad and depressed about the future." Clearly, a lot more of them commit suicide than in the countries with lower places in that person's list, thus the absurdity of the claim. This is not to say anything about Denmark, but about the absurdity of the writer's generalization about happiness there.

Who cares why? We've beaten Ireland. And Sweden. And Germany and Belgium!
Obviously the very perceptive creator of that list has never been to the Efteling. It's soooooo much better than Legoland.
So, we could have been number 1!

Just to be clear, their contribution to cocoa processing (known as "Dutch processed") would certainly make me list them higher than many countries. And Van Houten cocoa is amazing.

The very perceptive creator of that list had Germany beat Austria because in Germany they speak German, which is an amazing language per said creator. As opposed to the pig latin they must speak in Österreich.
