In the final scene of Swansong, the season 8 cliffhanger, one of the first things that Bobby says when he wakes up before he dies is "Oh Mama, I'm sorry". I always thought this was curious first thing for him to say because what was apologising for? Was he sorry for dying or sorry that he was putting her through having to see him die and if so, why did he just apologise to Ellie and not the whole family. Or was he apologising for something else?

The most painful thing for a parent is to outlive your children. I think Bobby was apologizing for not outliving his mom and not sparing her the pain of seeing him die.

If he was apologising for dying, I think it would have been more appropriate to apologise to Pam for leaving her to bring up their son alone, especially as it was shortly after the first time they had rumpy-pumpy together in years.

For me, the apology just to Ellie didn't make total sense.

I always wondered when he said 'all that wasted time...we shoulda been married'.... I think he's talking to Pam but Jenna believes he's talking to her.

Yes, I really liked the ambiguity of that comment in how both women could think it applied to them.

I do too. That was a clever idea to have the two of them right next to each other and then have Bobby say something that they each think applies to only them.

I was especially impressed with Steve Kanaly's performance in that scene, his acting was some of the best acting I've ever seen him do.

To me, it seemed like just a silly plot device to set up Jenna's ridiculous and annoying nervous breakdown later on. Jenna knew from the night that Pam won the showdown and forced her to finally fess up that Bobby wasn't Charlie's father that Bobby was always going to pick Pam over her, she had already picked up on Bobby not wanting to go through with their wedding by the time he "died", and everyone including the audience knew it was Pam that Bobby was talking to. So to have Jenna delude herself seemed out of character and silly.

Absolutely agree that Kanaly was outstanding in that scene though.

I hope I'll never be a patient at that hospital. Because I think the people who would come to visit me would feel sick by just looking at me.

Bobby saying sorry to Miss Ellie I thought was his way of apologizing for the pain she is and was about to endure. First there was Jock and in some small part she had lost her favourite son Gary. Witnessing the death of a child by a parent would be excruciating. They would feel helpless when it's built into the DNA of a parent to protect their offspring at any cost.

Bobby might very well have done that under different circumstances but here, he was dying because he'd chosen to save Pam even if mean dying in the process. Bobby took the impact of the car so Pam wouldn't have to; it's like taking a bullet for someone. I don't think I've ever seen a TV show or a movie where a man apologizes to the woman he loves for giving his life so she could live. It seems to me that a "you're welcome" would be more appropriate in that situation than an "I'm sorry."

It did to me. He obviously loved his Mother very much.

If I was in that situation I think I'd say exactly the same thing. :(
