Let’s count how many bourbon and branches get ordered/drank per episode!
Also notice most of the women drink white wine with exception of Sue Ellen’s vodka and they’ll drink champagne on many occasions.
Only mainly see Ray with a beer.

on a related note, extrapolating out from what we see in a typical episode, JR (and Jock in his day) must have had at least 6-8 drinks a day, without much noticeable effect.

Counting how many drinks the characters have per episode and what the type of alcohol is
    Just for fun
I was a kid in the 80s so I didn’t notice drinking plus I’m watching episodes now 4 or so in a row so it’s easier to notice maybe back in the day when they only aired once a week it wasn’t as obvious

There certainly are men with high tolerances who can do that. Especially big, 200 pound plus guys like them. We used to be a society that enjoyed drinking and smoking, and basically having a good time, much more than we are today. You can se it in Mad Men, set in the 60s, that it was standard practice for guys to smoke at work and have a few drinks at lunch, as part of the work day. I guess that's how you make an office job more enjoyable.

Today, there's this reform mentality that apparently has the goal of trying to suck the fun out of everything. I believe it's our purpose to not just exist, but to enjoy life. It seems to me that people in the 20th century had a lot more fun than the typical person today. You've gotta enjoy what you're doing, otherwise, what's the point? I couldn't have been very productive after drinking quite that much but for the guys that could and did, more power to 'em!

Smoking is wonderful and I did give it up years ago and I often wonder why. For me, anything that makes you die quicker is a good thing and at least you’ll enjoy life while you’re here. Ian Fleming smoked and drank like crazy and died super young and I’m sure he died very happy and with no regrets.

I suspect the bourbon was used so often it could well have been used as a condiment, or topping the breakfast cereal.

I find that really really irresponsible. It's a vile habit - and why would you want to die quicker? Just UGH.

I pour bourban over Bran Flakes with some milk.

    It's an explosive combination. :)

I always wondered if they drove around drunk....I remember one episode where JR commented to Jock that "he would have to drive once he drunk him under the table"

Well, Sue Ellen certainly did many times!
But for sure J.R. did going home from bars, restaurants and his romantic dalliances.
