CBS should do a KNOTS LANDING limited series.

Let's see what the characters are doing in 2017.

I doubt CBS would be interested. But someone else might and if Warner shopped it they could find it a home.

We did get to see Gary and Val (and how brief it was for Val, with Lucy, the long forgotten daughter in tow no less) on TNT's Dallas. I was glad Gary got an actual front and center story!

Netflix seems to be the go-to for revivals now. Fuller House, Gilmore Girls ...

I'd take a Netflix 4 parter for Knots Landing like Gilmore Girls.

I'd rather the remaining twelve seasons were officially released.

Does it have to be a choice? Success with one might lead to the other.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a choice, but I'd feel very wary of any attempt to directly revisit Knots either as a reboot or a continuation. The thought of it being bastardised in the way that Dallas was in recent years isn't a pleasant one.

I'm not jumping on the "TNT Dallas is evil" bandwagon here, because I don't think it's that cut and dried. But the general consensus seems to be that it fouled that nest somewhat. Personally, I did not appreciate the way Gary and Val were treated on that show. It bothered me more than the way Lucy, Ray or Cliff were treated because Knots feels closer to my heart.

I'm not a gambler, so I take the view that no new series means no risk of disappointment.

Anything that gets those remaining seasons officially released is good news in at least one regard.

Is a limited series a mini-series? What kind of story should it be? A whodunit, or another "Empire Valley"? Constance McCashin as Laura's evil twin sister?

Only if David Jacobs is involved. Learn from Dallas and keep all outsiders away from it.

It would be a harder series to bring back in limited series...because it had such an open concept.

Dallas, roseanne, Gilmore girls, etc were easy to bring back because their scope was more narrow and focused.

Like someone posted a long time ago, which Knots Landing would you focus on? The original concept, the middle years concept, or the later years concept? I'd take any of those concepts...but picking one would alienate some of the fanbase.

My choice would be the original concept, with a new group of neighbors who live in the same neighborhood as the original cul-de-sac. That allows the show to have a similar look and feel (being set in the same neighborhood, even if it's not the same Crystallaire Place), and maybe even keep the same types of characters. Their challenges would be the same kinds of family dramas that are ageless, but with modern touches. The four couples would be recognizable but not direct copies of the originals.

I know the "Hollywood" temptation would be to have original cast members or characters appear, and that might be an option once in a while in the same vein of the Dallas drop-ins, but it would only be done when/if it's written well--not just stunt casting. I think it would be mildly insulting to the new cast if the producers made them believe they couldn't carry the show by themselves. I also know the fan-fic writer in everyone seems intent on creating a new version using all the now-adult children from the original, but I find that kind of construct to be too confining and limits the plotting.
It would not hurt, however, to refer to places created in the original (like perhaps one of the characters buying his car from Knots Landing Motors, or Knollwood Realty brokering the sales of the houses).

Such a exercise would work best as a limited (six or ten episodes) series, and would likely be best as an episodic drama rather than serialized like the later years. Serialized dramas would likely need more characters, and that would drag down the limited budget.

They can use one of the kids / new generation characters as one of the couples.
That way there's a connection to the old show and an "excuse" for the original characters to drop by.

I personally liked the concept of the new Dallas, bar the "invented" Mexican family. New modern show, with a touch of the old.

Ideally there would be a mix of the two. It's well within reason that the Ewings and Mackenzies would still be neighbours but it's unlikely that all their offspring would live in the surrounding houses.

Well, it'd be mostly an entirely new cast with a few drop-ins at best - the original cast is between 60-80 now - if they're still alive!

Of course, you can do it with an entirely new cast... but why not create your own thing with a similar feel instead? Desperate Housewives took a lot of cues from Knots Landing as it is (though, I get a lot can't move past the blatant comedy they used). And if we're going further the short-lived Canadian soap LA Complex ended up feeling more like Melrose Place than the actual reboot did.

In short: why bother? I know recognisable "brand" names are hot right now, but it would probably just end leaving a bitter taste in everyone's mouth.

Maybe in 2019 something will happen for the 40th Anniversary.
