You have my sympathy and my empathy BF. My MacBook died a couple of weeks ago after seven and a half years of loyal service and daily toil.

Like you I sent mine off for repair, but after diagnostics all they could do was remove its innards and hand them to me as a souvenir.

I too find phones quite soul destroying for posting here, and since my new Mac won’t be ready for another couple of weeks I’ll continue to keep a low-ish profile here and continue to watch the music Nominations threads from outside with my nose pressed up against the window.

Anyway, BF. I hope you get those nasty gremlins sorted and can enjoy SoapChatting in full technicolour very soon.

My sympathies Barbara. You didn't say whether you had a Mac or Windows computer. If it was Windows do you recall if the repair agent performed a "Factory Reset/Recovery?" I ask this because most repair agents will give forewarning that a factory reset/recovery is generally a requirement. Often this eliminates problems unless of course it was a hardware fault. In any case a factory reset/recovery takes the computer right back to out-of-box state. If you noted any software programs you had purchased and installed separately or personal files have all been removed then the repair agent has performed this task. This rejuvenates the computer but can be a pain for the customer.

That pain stems from Windows informing Microsoft a new operating system has come online and you'll be inundated with "Security Updates". This could explain why you think the computer is running "slow". As you are attempting to use the computer all these updates are occuring in the background, rendering your computer sluggish. I also suggest to customers when purchasing a new computer allow all the required updates to occur before diving in and wanting to use their new toy. When I personally have purchased a new computer I generally set it up in the afternoon and allow all this to happen overnight. Windows will even reboot itself after security updates have been applied and off it goes again. Generally the next morning everything is ready to go.

I hope this post helps. :)

Awee…. You have my sympathies. My laptop died on me around October and I was hardly ever on here until I got a new one. Phone posting is awful. And I hate even reading forums on my phone. Hopefully you can take advantage of the sakes BF.
The worst thing for me was loosing the majority of my iTunes as I had added it all myself via CD which can be a very lengthy process. Now my iTunes only has the digital releases I purchased. And my new laptop bought online while on sale is nice enough, but has no disc drive.

Oh, what a nightmare for you, Alexis. I thought I had it bad because I hadn’t backed up my MacBook in over a month before it died so I may need to add a month’s worth of new music (at worst - the innards I’ve been given from inside my old Mac should hopefully replicate it as it was right before it died).

Anyway, I hope rebuilding your music library goes well. It could be one of those things you look back on with a sense of accomplishment and maybe it’s an opportunity to streamline your music and get rid of pesky duplicates. At least that’s the Pollyanna way of looking at it.

Don’t get me started (oops - too late)!!! It’s now apparently impossible to buy a MacBook with a disc drive. Even though I’ve ordered a customised one direct from Apple.

And get this: Macs no longer have USB ports. They’ve all been replaced by the USB-C which is a completely different size and shape. In other words, it’s yet another way of trying to make people spend a fortune on replacing accessories (just like when they changed the headphone jack shape on the iPhone).

But, even though NO Mac can be bought with a USB port, the ONLY disc drive they sell online or in store comes with just... a USB. Try making sense of that one.

I guess you'll need one of these
    [IMG]

But what exactly is the advantage of a laptop without a disc drive?
On the upside, the external drives are fairly cheap, well....except for the Apple ones of course.
I'm sorry but I don't understand why anyone would want to support such an expensive system, and then being enslaved to its every whim.

I've only ever used Windows OS from the very beginning. I've never had a complaint only because the OS sits in the background while I get on with my work. I do appreciate the Apple product but you're right Willie with regards to being enslaved. One of the biggest complaints I hear from people regarding the iPhone is Apple refusing to have a Micro SD slot so people can enhance the memory of the device. But then I get annoyed with those same customers who say they have 10,000+ images on their smartphone. I've been taking happy snaps before I was a teenager and in my entire collection I wouldn't have 10,000 photographs.

Oh, I have a couple with different ends, but I will need so many of the buggers. My phone, iPod and hard drive (if it’s compatible) all have different shaped ports.

I could get a thingy that turns a USB into a USC but I worry it will affect the quality of transfers between devices if the connection is in two stages.

The main advantage would be size, I suppose. The laptop can be thinner and presumably lighter. Plus it has fewer moving parts that are difficult to access if anything goes wrong.

Personally, I’d still rather have a thicker heavier one that I can use discs in.

Yes indeed, though I feel not a little overwhelmed at the idea of finding the right one. So many pros and cons. I think I’ll visit a specialist shop and get some pointers.

I hear you Willie. I was strictly a Windows/Android person for a long time and resisted the other. The “problem” is that the more expensive system is (in my experience) far slicker and user-friendly, but that’s all subjective, I know.

I do know that with the new one I’ve just bought I get less machine for significantly more money than the older model, and forcing consumers to buy new accessories with every new model irks me. So yes, I do feel annoyed at having to compromise because there’s no other way to have it. But that’s marketing for you.

That could be a valid argument, but it also feels a bit like "removing the wheels from my bike so I'll never have to worry about a flat tyre anymore".

Good luck with the computer problem BF. I can sympathsize too since my computer crashed this summer. It was probably due to lightning. After that I handed it in for repaired, realized it would get too expensive to fix since the motherboard was broken. Then I decided to buy a new computer and the shop that I placed my order with was really slow with delivering it so it took me over a month until it was ready. In the mean time I had to post from my phone! :p
So yeah I agree with everything you've said. I can read the board fairly easy on my phone (unless it's a thread filled with embedded youtube clips) but to post from it is a nightmare as it goes so slow to type compared to the computer.

Another side effect from the broken computer is that I have only made 10 fan music videos all year. It's the lowest number since I began making videos back in 2003.

So frustrating. I hate computer problems! :(
I had to buy a new one last year after mine broke down completely and I am still frustrated when the new one doesn't work like the old one did. Yesterday I spent about 1 hour cursing over the new and improved version of a DVD burner software that wouldn't even let me add the videos I wanted to burn off to a disc in a normal way but instead showed me all of the photos I didn't want to burn off in different folders. But the folder with the videos I wanted it coudn't find so I had to add it manually and it took ages to figure out how that was done.

You should think about investing in an external hard drive, not only will it store all the files important to you, it's an extra backup for when things do go wrong and we all know this happens.
