    Bananarama
    Top 15

    p01bqs6s.jpg

Bananarama is a British female pop music vocal group formed in London in 1981 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. Their success on both pop and dance charts have earned them a listing in The Guinness Book of Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world. In addition to their chart success, they are also known for their vocal style, generally singing in unison rather than in harmony like most vocal groups
    [IMG][IMG]
Following Fahey's departure from the group in 1988, Jacquie O'Sullivan joined the group for three years. After O'Sullivan's 1991 departure, Dallin and Woodward continued Bananarama as a duo. It was announced in April 2017 that Fahey had rejoined Bananarama and that they would be touring the UK from November 2017

    Stevie Nicks
    (Top Ten)

Stephanie Lynn Nicks (born May 26, 1948) is an American singer-songwriter who is often referred to as the Queen of Rock and Roll

Collectively, her work both as a member of Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist has produced over 40 top-50 hits and sold over 140 million records, making her one of the best selling music acts of all time with Fleetwood Mac.

In 1981, while remaining a member of Fleetwood Mac, Nicks began her solo career, releasing the album Bella Donna, which topped the Billboard album charts and reached platinum status less than three months after its release, and has since been certified quadruple-platinum. She has released a total of eight solo studio albums to date, with her most recent titled 24 Karat Gold: Songs from the Vault, released in October 2014. During her solo career, she has had a close working relationship with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They served as a backing band for several tracks on each of her solo albums, and the two have toured and performed together frequently over the past three decades. The song "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", performed by Nicks and Petty, was one of the biggest hits for either artist.

    Saint Etienne

    saintetinne.jpg

Saint Etienne are an English band from London, formed in 1990. The band consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. They became associated with the UK's indie dance scene in the 1990s, beginning with the release of their debut album Foxbase Alpha in 1991. Their work has been described as uniting 1990s club culture with 1960s pop and other disparate influences

    1. I Was Born On Christmas Day
This was my first Saint Etienne experience, saw the clip on MTV because at that time I followed the UK (dance) charts religiously.
There was no internet so I read magazines and music reviews, there was a great dance chart on Dutch radio, I received catalogues from record companies all over the world and of course I did a lot of shopping and crate-digging. And harassing DJs.
Anyway, I instantly loved this song, but I had no idea there was more to come! Who was this mysterious Saint Etienne?
    upload_2017-11-2_2-54-15.png

    2. Pale Movie
I guess it made sense that the last decade of the century was a time of "looking back", and music-wise it was a 60s/70s/80s retro-galore.
What makes SE's music so magnificent is that they do it so cleverly, their songs are like little kaleidoscopes, it doesn't sound like "this" or "that", it's an explosion of sounds, colours and memories.
Pale Movie is a perfect example of that. Like Bananarama's Latin disco version of "Long Train Running", it sounds breezy, warm, seductive and "the softness of cinema seats".

    3. Over The Border
A song that gives me great pleasure, but it also makes me think how much fun it would be to create a song like this.

    4. He's On The Phone
Based on Etienne Daho's "Week-End À Rome" (1984), it was also recorded by Saint Etienne Daho as "Accident", featuring Sarah Cracknell's vocals.
Steve Rodway (aka Motiv 8, one of the best remixers of the 90s) produced the Saint Etienne single (featuring vocals by Etienne Daho!) and voila: it's magic!
    upload_2017-11-2_2-54-44.png

    5. Swim Swan Swim
An homage to the naff intro/background music they often used for those 1970s naff educational/hobby TV programmes. Love it!

    6. Hobart Paving
This is just very beautiful, poignant and lush.

    7. Dive
It starts like a disco remix of the main theme of a cheesy James Bond knock-off, but then they throw in a bit of "La Bamba" and the result is fantastic.

    8. Missing Persons Bureau
Funny, this is a cover of the Womack & Womack song, but it sounds like Nile Rodgers-produced Diana Ross recording, without the beat (and without Diana Ross).

    9. Speedwell
Great melodic lounge-y dancetrack with a tribal theme and gospel style vocals (sampled, maybe) and it reminds me of other early 90s bands like Lionrock and Gloworm.
    It's really cool 90s stuff.

    10. I'm Too Sexy
From the "So Tough" album, but I think it first appeared on a charity single called The Fred EP (3 Right Said Fred coverversions).
It's a mash-up of I'm Too Sexy and "David's Song" (Kelly Family) in the style of "Moscow Diskow" (Telex). Bizarre, but very good.
    upload_2017-11-2_2-53-50.png

Too bad I couldn't include "Avenue" and "You're In A Bad Way" and many more. There's something for everyone and there are like 10,000 SE videos on YouTube.
