We all agree the Dynasty scores were wonderful, beautiful. My favourite composers of the series were Marvin Laird, Ben Lanzarone, Angela Morley and Lance Rubin. A lot of TV shows had their scores released on CD recently (Wonder Woman, Mission Impossible,...). What is happening with our 80's soaps? Why cannot we have the Dynasty, The Colbys, Knots Landing, Dallas, Falcon Crest, Flamingo Road,... scores released? They would be a great success I am convinced. What can we do to get them released? Help me my dearest Friends!

Hi, Iphill -- no, we don't all agree. Some of there scores were appealing, a lot of it blandly and homogeneously incidental and/or too woodwindy. And Ben Lanzarone's oft-repeated Season 2 score worked well for late-S2 when the plots were very focused, but it was re-used to disastrous effect even into mid-S5 and just made the show feel even more confused and disoriented and hyperbolic-without reason.

For all some of us have complained about inappropriately OTT scores on DYNASTY, most of the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the decision to endlessly re-use Lanzarone's heady score long after it stopped working.

I thought Peter Myers was probably DYNASTY's best composer and seemed to write most of the individual character melodies (other than the ones established in the pilot, Krystle's theme and Claudia's theme, by Bill Conti).

I also very much like Artie Kane's scores.

I loved the leitmotifs established both by Conti and Myers. I thought Ben Lanzarone's score was great, but it was written for season 2. In season 1 at least, I know that the composers got the script in advance and created music accordingly. That was possibly true for season 2 as well. But as the cost-cutting in certain areas started (external shots, among others) so that the budget for clothes etc. would balloon, the music score suffered as well.
Marvin Laird wrote some of the most melodramatic scores where Alexis was involved (including the amazing crescendo when Cecil dies) which worked well for the most melodramatic character of the show. And Joan Collins even had the close up with the purple eye shadow to match.

Hmmmmm…. I'm not sure that the clothing budget cut into the establishing shots or the scores.
Yes, Laird's music was wildly lush, but mostly worked.

They never came out and said it, but both Cramer and De Blasio had mentioned that the budget was a "zero sum game" and De Blasio mentioned that for budget reasons exterior shots were gradually cut down after season three. That was around the same time the clothes budget grew. I just assumed that was true for other budget trimmings as well.

No, I don't mean the budget for exterior shooting, but for mere exterior stock footage.

I have several La-La Land deluxe re-issues of film soundtracks, they are exceptionally well done. I would love a CD of Conti's score from the pilot and perhaps another CD with selctions from later episodes; at the very least we need the leitmotivs for Alexis, Dominique and several other later additions to the cast. I was able to find Angela Morley's "Blues for Alexis" on iTunes.

Of all of the prime-time soaps, I think "Dynasty" is most deserving of a commercial soundtrack release due to the use of leitmotif and sonata form.

Apart from the character themes, i liked the in-episode music the most in season 9. A lot of it had already been used in variatons on "The Colbys". There is something very "homely" and melancholic with these tunes, i like them a lot. I'm not sure who the composer of these were (possibly McCarthy?) but i'd LOVE to buy a soundtrack release of those! :)

Ken Harrison, Dennis McCarthy and John E Davis composed wonderful scores for The Colbys. I love in particular Harrison's ones. Ken Harrison then worked for Melrose Place. The few John E Davis scores for Dynasty S6 were brilliant!
All the scores were magnifiscent and we deserve a CD release. What can we do my friends to get them?
About Lanzarone's scores, there were few scores by him during S2 and S3. Not fair at all to say they were over exposed. Lanzarone's scores were the essence of the greatness of Dynasty at its best. About Marvin Laird, who is a friend of mine, his scores were so well written and intended. Listen to the hospital marriage between Alexis and Cecil: each note, each sound, each silence has a purpose! It's pure genius!
Let's fight and get these wonderful 80's scores released on CD. Lance Rubin's Dallas scores were so beautiful and touching. His music for Swan Song deserves a special CD for itself!

It's fair. It was basically the same score re-used over and over again. It worked for late-Season 2, because the show still made sense. When it was used later on, it just exacerbated the impact of the over-arching confusion.

Whenever Lance Rubin and Angela Morley pop up circa Season 5, I always wind up feeling like I'm watching mid-series DALLAS. Minus the scripts, of course.
