I don't disagree. Sable on THE COLBYS would look really mean toward Frankie (who didn't deserve it because any emotion toward an empty bucket is wasted) and toward Connie (who just needed a few more days to become as senile as Sable tried to portray her). Unlike Alexis, who had this "I will savor crushing you" look toward her targets, with Sable there was a level of personal passion, tension, and commitment which I found fascinating.Maybe what some of you are referring to as the 50s sensibility of the show's dynamics--or maybe not.

It was abrupt and it was also negating all of seasons 7 and 8. After he and Steven bonded that much, I don't buy that he would burn his letter away. Maybe Adam in S4 would react that way because of the loss of his wife and son, but not this one. I think Paulsen cared more about Alexis having a sounding board (and someone to be her proxy while Collins was away) than realistic character development.
But Adam had become a secondary character during S8. While I agree with Thomson that the character took huge leaps back, he also became front and center again.

Adam's change I could deal with as he was really a bit of nutcase anyway. So his mood/personality swings sort of made sense. At least with having the same face all through the series run. It's harder to buy the severe personality changes in the other siblings as their heads would change.

That's how I feel: it just didn't seem terribly jarring, even if Thomson thought so.

I'm up to "Every Picture Tells A Story", the episode that ends with Alexis vowing to make Blake pay for Roger Grimes' murder. Of course, I already knew who the body turned out to be, but the reveal is nicely and slowly built up to that explosive cliffhanger. The first 3 or 4 episodes were a little slow, but the show has quickly transformed itself. The wit is fantastic. The pace has settled comfortably. Things are building.

Too bad it seems Alexis is off again for 2 episodes. I have yet to make up my mind about this on again/off again situation with her. I suppose I'll wait until I finish the season first to see how I feel about it. That's hardly criticism - Collins was pretty much the only energetic part of even the worst DYNASTY seasons. Here, written with such wit and pathos, she shines brighter than ever, and her scenes standout even more than usual. I loved when she went apeshit on Dex, accusing him of betraying her, even though he's clearly always had her best interests at heart. That's so Alexis.

I am REALLY liking Zorelli and his possible relationship with Fallon. Virginia feels like an empty slate, so far, and then she started talking about crystals. That's so Aunt Ginny. We'll see.

Fallon and Sammy Jo catfighting and then becoming friends was great.

The situation with Krystle is really sad. Maybe it "helps" that I know this facilitates Krystle's exit, but generally I think it's a superbly written story. I think the Evans from Season 1/2 would have played it better, but I'm not complaining.

Jeff: He's extremely hot. My God. I'd climb him like a tree. I can say that now because the writing finally recognizes what an ass he is, and JJ is playing it for all it's worth. Some of his comedic stuff is fun.

And, most importantly of all: THE PIPELINE IS FINALLY FINISHED!!! It only took what? Four seasons?!

Yes, Linda also apparently loved her exit story.

I agree she would have played it better if only Paulsen or somebody had told her to "relax" as she was still a bit into SAD-PTSD automation. I always think of the scene in which Sable inadvertently spills the beans about the identity of the body in the lake and how much better Linda would have done in back in S1 & 2. But oh, well.

Alexis showing up like a vampire always sends chills down my spine.

@Willie Oleson and I have discussed the use of Alexis on the show, and on a rare instance where we two agreed, we concurred that such a powerful character works better when they are not always around, but you know their appearance spells trouble.
Paulsen did it for the money, but it ended up working wonderfully. Heck, had I been in charge of DYNASTY, I would have paid Collins double the salary so she wouldn't complain, but I would have used her as he did throughout the series.

And during her absence you'd think, what is she up to now? what's cooking in the background?

    THE WEDDING/GINGER SNAPS/DELTA WOE

The last three episodes have been quite the experience. The wedding episode is perfect -- a wonderful tribute, visually stunning (one of the most beautiful soap weddings I've ever seen) and you can't argue with that super nostalgic, heartbreaking freeze frame of Krystle waving goodbye to not only her family and friends, but the show.

Still, when in the next episode we hear Krystle's operation has failed and she's in a coma, there's a sinking feeling. I knew it was coming, but it still felt horrible, because you know she isn't meant to come back. DYNASTY without Krystle will be rough, regardless of quality.

The Zorelli/Fallon relationship has been fascinating. Zorelli feels like the sort of character you'd never see on this show were it not for Paulsen, which must be a good thing, considering the mess the previous teams left. Their scenes are written wittily and the actors have enough chemistry to pull it off. I loved how Zorelli was the one to have a post-sex freak out, a trope usually reserved for the women.

Meanwhile, Ginger sees Dex and pretty much short-circuits. I'm still not convinced by the actress, but the storyline is intriguing enough.

Alexis has been gone for three episodes now, but Sable fills that spot quite marvelously. I loved how she and Jeff finally had a confrontation (complete with slap) and are back in each other's orbits. Also, there's a terrific scene in the casino where Sable turns Dex on and then leaves him cold. Beacham is once again giving a tour-de-force performance. And the twist with Sable and the lake and whatever's going on there is great.

Interestingly, Aaron Spelling and the like are back to being credited as Executive Producers at the end of the episode during the freeze frame (Paulsen's credit gone). It's also the first episode that ends with a double shooting that leads to a fire somehow, so I don't know what it all means but should be interesting to see....

That's actually a goof -- one that's never been corrected in 30 years. At the end of "Delta Woe," Aaron, Cramer and the Shapiros get a repeated EP credit, while Paulsen is denied one.

But it's just an accident; Paulsen is still running the show.

I'm up to Tales of the Tape. Most of the season done. This second half has been quite the experience. The Alexis/Sable rivalry has finally come to full fruition and it's a thing of marvel. From fighting about tankers to paintings to Dex, every scene they share is gold, written with such wit, and ice-cold bitchiness. If only it could last forever.

Paulsen has finally managed to make Dex/Alexis seem real and passionate. Alexis' reactions - overt jealously, anger - reveal she does truly love him, in her own sociopathic way.

Frankly, the pace seems to have slowed down a little too much for certain things. Zorelli and Fallon almost feel like they've been playing out the same beats for most of the second half of the season. Sammy Jo and the hot priest the same. That is not to say that the actual scenes aren't written and played nicely. But there is a point to be made about it being a little static.

That being said, Monica's arrival happens at just the right time to add some excitement, even if Alexis appears to have left for three episodes, which would mean a return just in time for the end. I have no words for Jeff and Monica's sexual chemistry.

Overall, I'm excited to see what the last four episodes will bring.

Only good stuff ahead. What remains is the sad longing for more. And then comes "The Reunion" .. :re:

Oh, by the way ... the picture quality of that Australian release of The Reunion is actually quite good (not from HD source, but on the same high SD-level as "The Colbys" are on DVD) and have a very high bitrate (up to 8.6 Mbit/s at times), no compression artifacts to be seen. And the discs are region free and can be played in any DVD player worldwide. They come in NTSC US-TV-standard and so run with the correct speed. All intros and the CBS-Logo can be skipped and you are in the main menu in like 2 seconds. So, at least technically VERY recommended. Just in case anybody cares .. :p
At least my DYNASTY-collection is finally complete now by the end of the decade.

I am already missing it and it's not quite finished yet.

Funny you should mention The Reunion DVD. I discovered it was out a couple weeks ago and asked for it as a Christmas present. That way I have it but at least I didn't have to pay for it LOL I will be watching, though. Gotta finish the entire thing.

At last, I am rewatching season 9. There are so many things I had forgotten. And a few things that I was happy to have forgotten lol
For exemple, I didn't remember how much Virginia was not working as a character. That's really a weak point of the first part of this amazing season. And, the actress is not helping. Very bad casting choice imo.

But I really enjoy many, many, many things this season :
    - Fallon is back. I love her new-old attitude. Love her dialogues (anyway, all characters dialogues are so much better this season) and her interactions with Sammy Jo, Dex, Jeff, Blake, and Adam. Really organic. It works on so many levels. There are still campy cat fight, but it's greatly balanced by great writing.
    - Sable : she's the amazing grace of this season. She's strong, she's scheming, but for good reasons. She's loyal as friend to Blake and Krystle. She's the perfect nemesis to Alexis.
    - Alexis : I agree, her absence in some episodes makes her presence even stronger.
    - Krystle : I'd like to thank Linda Evans for asking to be written out : it gave Krystle a wonderful storyline, impacting Blake...
    - Blake : he's back to his former self! That's so great. I was so annoyed but the "perfect" Blake Carrington. It's really nice that he can have his temper back, his roughness... And it works logically : Krystle is not here anymore to moderate his reactions.
    - Dex : I never cared for him. In this season I like him. I love his friendly relation with Fallon and his relation with Sable.

The season is not perfect, but it's so enjoyable. It's a shame that it was cancelled after this great ride. But at least, Dynasty went with dignity (yes, please, don't mention the Reunion)

It all makes you wonder what Paulsen would have done with the Krystle/Alexis dynamic had he been able to do a season 10 and Linda returned. Would Krystle have gotten a new edge after returning from Switzerland. Or if the Pollocks had done it maybe new face? Who knows.

Sometimes I like to re-imagine the Sable/Alexis scenes with Krystle in Sable's place, saying Sable's line (and occasionally re-wording them to make them work better for the character). It would have been fun having Krystle be willing to play dirty.
