The Tate's gained a huge following because in 1989, no such family had really appeared on British soap before, The Tate's were seemed like something fresh out of Dallas or Dynasty (even though both shows were way past their heyday by 1989)

No family who has inhabited Home Farm has lasted more than a few years since the last of the Tate family left in the mid 2000s,
The White's are definitely the true successors of the Tate's, sadly they're being written out.

Times change, and the world moves on and Emmerdale has normally been quick to change with the times, by 1980, the Emmerdale of 1973 seemed outdated, likewise by 1989, the Emmerdale of 1980 was out of place and so it goes.

    Return of the Tates!

I loved the revelation, as well as being Chris Tate and Rachel Hughes son, he's the step-grandson of Joe Sugden, he even resembles his uncle Mark Hughes around the time of his death in 1993, I've been watching the 1988-89 episodes on YouTube recently, which was the time the Hughes family arrived (the Tate's would follow a year later)
Funny watching a perm haired, school girl Rachel in the late 80s now knowing that one day she would spawn Chris Tate mk2.

This is excellent development, I wonder if his cousin Jean will return? She'll be around 15 years now, plus not only is she a Tate but a Windsor also!

Wonder if we'll ever see Joe Tate's only living grandparent back...?

David Hughes (last seen 22nd November 1990).

Its really weird how the writers handled Rachel's parents, especially Kate, I know she died in 1997, but she didn't go to Mark's funeral nor Rachel's wedding, same with David

Here's my list of past characters who could 'relevantly' return in the near future:

    1. Sandie Merrick (Robert Sugden's half-sibling and business history with Eric Pollard).
    2. David Hughes (Joe Tate's only living grandparent).
    3. Zoe Tate (Joe Tate's aunt).
    4. Jean Tate (Joe Tate's cousin).
    5. Scott Windsor (Jean Tate's father).

Chrissie and Lawrence are dead, Rebecca in a coma and Lachlan is up and about, I hope Rebecca lives, though if she died, Seb would be in similar circumstances to his father; Robert, whose birth mother Pat Merrick died in a car crash in 1986!

This is what I like about Emmerdale, they are never scared to kill off long running characters or make them responsible for the death of others.

Compared to EastEnders right now Emmerdale is the National Theatre equivalent of Continuing Drama.

    Gerard-Fletcher.jpg Gordon_Livesy.png

How did Aaron manage to stay so calm last night when the ghost of his father turned up as Joe's client?

Actor Gerard Fletcher was the first actor to play Gordon Livesy back in 2003, 2004 and 2006.

I hate how the Dingles are treating Lisa, she's bound to call the police after her heart attack, and she thought she was going to die, yes I feel sorry for Liv , but the Dingles have no right to ostracise Lisa, what would have happened I wonder if she died? How would they react then? This storyline just gives something else for Aaron to moan about.

Emmerdale is too far from its roots, it needs some 1970s links to return such as Sandie Merrick, Matt Skilbeck and Dolly Skilbeck as too many legends have been killed off already.

Having said that, Eric Pollard is now the longest serving character since 1986, even though he hardly appears anymore, and the same with Diane. I think Emmerdale has got worse in the last 5-10 years, Terry, Viv, Louise, Val, Alan, Betty - They're all gone.

The big decline for Emmerdale was when Kim Tate left nearly 20 years ago, and then Chris Tate left. Frank and Chris shouldn't have been killed off. I don't think Norman Bowler and Peter Amory liked the direction Emmerdale was going in when it increased the number of episodes per week, they felt it was becoming too much and I agree with them, things haven't been the same since the Tates left.

I agree with you on the number of episodes, it's overkill, as for older characters; Emmerdale is odd in the sense that unlike Corrie & EE, there are no characters from its initial first decade, Eric and Robert are the only characters that are from the 1980s, with most of the longest serving characters are from 1994, twenty two years after the show began.

However I like that Emmerdale can move into one era into another
However I do find Emmerdale focuses too much on certain characters (ahem ahem Robron)

I noticed Rocky Marshall who played Duncan Hart in Family Affairs (the only member of the Hart family who survived) currently playing DI Mark Bain in Emmerdale.

If ITV should bring back 1 soap, it should be Family Affairs to replace Emmerdale. Acting roles could be given to the Southern-based actors in Emmerdale such as Samantha Giles, Sheree Murphy, Deena Payne, Lorraine Chase and Patsy Kensit.

As good as Family Affairs was it is best left in the past.
