That's why I didn't mention the artist names at all, because I don't care who sings it, because it's about the composer and songwriter Andrew Lloyd Webber himself.
Because I think the song "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is also very beautiful sung by Olivia Newton-John and the Carpenters, maybe even better then Madonna version.

And Barbra Streisand's versions from "As If We Never Said Goodbye" , "With One Look" and "Memory" are real masterpieces.

Carpenters - Don't Cry For Me Argentina (1977)

    Olivia Newton-John - Don't Cry For Me Argentina (1977)

Barbra Streisand - As If We Never Said Goodbye (1993)

I have never heard the original song from the Broadway show, but i read that Elaine Paige was the first one how sang this song, but Barbra's version is still the version i only know. ;)

I agree, but for the purpose of this one, I didn't like the idea of having to sift through all the various versions as I tallied them up. Maybe when we've exhausted all options we can go for the singers first :D

Yes - there are so many wonderful versions it's difficult to pick a standout interpretation.

Having said that, I've recently discovered this stunning version from the star of the Australian stage version, and featuring Les 2000 Choristes:

The enormous choir creates a sense of the people to whom Eva is singing. It's really special.

Oh but I didn't expect you to list the different versions, after all this is not the Standards Thread.
And I'd love to do some other songwriters Top Tens.
Although there are still quite a few Best Selling Artists that we haven't done yet (cough*ELO, OMD*cough):D

    Elkie Brooks vs Kiki Dee
    Elkie vs Kiki.jpg

As always, if you have ten favourites from both sides, then please post the two lists and I will include them in the final tally.

    Elkie Brooks
    elk.jpg
Elkie Brooks (born Elaine Bookbinder, 25 February 1945) is an English singer, a vocalist with the bands Dada and Vinegar Joe, and later a solo artist. She gained her biggest success in the late 1970s and 1980s and has been nominated twice for Brit Awards. She is known for her powerful husky bluesy voice and her 13 Top 75 singles such as "Pearl's a Singer", "Lilac Wine", "Don't Cry Out Loud", "Fool (If You Think It's Over)", and "No More the Fool". Between her first chart album in 1977 and 1997 Brooks became the UK Female Artist with the Most Top 75 Chart Albums.

She is generally referred to as the "British Queen of Blues". Her 1981 "Pearls" album became the Biggest Selling album by a UK female artist in the history of the charts at that point

    Kiki Dee
    kik.jpg
Pauline Matthews (born 6 March 1947), better known by her stage name Kiki Dee, is an English singer born in Little Horton, Bradford, West Riding of Yorkshire. Known for her blue-eyed soul vocals, she was the first female singer from the UK to sign with Motown's Tamla Records.

Dee is best known for her 1974 hit "I've Got the Music in Me" and "Don't Go Breaking My Heart, her 1976 duet with Elton John, which went to Number 1 both in the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1993 she performed another duet with Elton John for his Duets album, a cover version of Cole Porter's "True Love", which reached No. 2 in the UK. During her career, she has released 40 singles, three EPs and 12 albums

Even more importantly, it was the record James Wilmott Brown put on when he lured Kathy Beale up to his flat above the Dagmar (now the new gay bar) and then raped her on EASTENDERS thirty years ago.

I liked Elkie when she was a bit dirtier and sweatier, before they put her in a posh frock and made her sing MoR cover versions (as they tried, but failed, to do with Alison Moyet later on).

This was the B-side of 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart'. It's about Cher apparently.

Kiki Dee has been fictionalised twice recently, last year in a play about Dusty Springfield written by Jonathan Harvey and now in the Reg biopic Rocketman.

This is a lovely version of a Jackson Browne song:

It also sounds a little early "Nikita" to me. The drum parts are terrific.
It's gorgeous, I want to put it in my top 10.

I also like the original (and more intimate) version of Pearl's A Singer
