    FADING INTO OBLIVION

There is nothing so entirely desirable in all the world as a few hours oblivion.
    - Anne Reeve Aldrich

    SYNOPSIS

With her successful plan to get rid of Mandy, Sue Ellen proved once and for all to JR that she was as cunning as he. He dumped the Winger tramp like garbage and Sue Ellen loved it. Her plan worked perfectly.

A few rekindled nights of pure passion didn't change their marriage; it was still in shambles. Sue Ellen opened up and expressed her feelings to JR. The reason for her scheme; she feared he loved another woman. She hoped for a total reconciliation with JR but his bruised ego stood in the way. Even though JR told Sue Ellen he never loved Mandy; separate lives continued.

In her attempt to expand Valentine's, she met Nicholas Pearce; her attraction to him hard to ignore. Sue Ellen initially resisted. She was lonely and Nicholas was there to fill her need.

Within a year, JR took control of Weststar and also ditched his flavor of the month, Kimberly Cryder. JR merged Weststar with Ewing Oil, forming Ewing Enterprises Corporation (EEC).

Nicholas grew frustrated with the outcome of their relationship. He didn’t like sneaking around in order for Sue Ellen to keep up appearances. They deserved better, he thought. Another problem that arose; JR was still in Sue Ellen's heart.

JR tolerated her affair with Nicholas. He was jealous but stubbornly kept himself at a distance. Sue Ellen made it clear she'd tell Nicholas it was over if JR would commit to their marriage. He didn’t. Sue Ellen vowed that JR would never hurt her again.

When the full realization of JR's inability to change his ways finally hit her, she slowly opened her heart up to Nicholas. All she ever wanted was a monogamous relationship with the man she loved, and Nicholas became that man. Sue Ellen moved out of Southfork, divorced JR, and married Nicholas.

The fade was about to begin.

Oh heck :( I don't know....JR and Sue Ellen are my couple. I don't know if I can read about her being happy with someone else, although this is VERY well written.

    CHAPTER ONE: New Beginnings

The house was perfect. Not too big or too small. A sprawling rancher in Braddock County proved to be the ideal choice. It wasn’t as grand as Southfork, but Sue Ellen didn’t care. A new beginning was all she wanted.

“I can’t wait to carry you over the threshold Mrs. Pearce,” Nicholas said. He picked Sue Ellen up after opening the door, and carried her across. Sue Ellen giggled until he put her down. It was official!

Sue Ellen wrapped her arms around his neck and proclaimed, “I’m the happiest girl in the world because of you.”

"I'm a lucky man," Nicholas proclaimed; he showered playful kisses upon her lips, ears, and neck. He smiled then said, "Goosebumps!"

"Not fair, ha-ha," Sue Ellen jokes.

Nicholas laughed. He caressed her shoulders and said, "You're just way too cute."

Sue Ellen smiled: her face radiant but concern in her eyes. "Are you sure that you'll be okay living here and not downtown Dallas?”

Nicholas tried to put her mind at ease. "Sweetheart, I know you want to be as close to John Ross as possible, so I'm fine with it. Your happiness is all that matters to me."

"Awe hun. I do feel better knowing Southfork is only 10 minutes away. I can see John Ross practically every day," Sue Ellen said.

"JR won't give you a hard time?" Nicholas inquired.

"He better not but with JR who knows. Considering I've agreed to let John Ross live at Southfork, I don’t think so. He was grateful to me for that," Sue Ellen told him.

"Good. You know you never told me how he felt about us getting married. He must've been infuriated.”

"I never told him. I wanted to wait until we actually tied the knot. I don't trust him," Sue Ellen confessed.

"What could he possibly do to us?" Nicholas asked.

"That man is capable of anything. I have years of JR's schemes, and hurting people, especially myself to go by. I can write a book, believe me," Sue Ellen explained.

"I certainly do but I still think JR should hear about our marriage from you, not someone else," Nicholas advised.

"We just got married this afternoon so he can't possibly find out yet. Besides, the only thing I want to do is make love with my handsome hubby," Sue Ellen said, her lips upon his.

Nicholas picked up Sue Ellen again, and carried her down the long hallway. Gently, he put her down on their king size bed; their passion erupted.

Sue Ellen, wrapped in Nicholas' arms, played with the few hairs on his chest. She lifted her head slightly and tenderly kissed his lips.

    ****

Later that night, Sue Ellen was restless; she couldn't fall asleep. She quietly crept out of bed and went into the kitchen to fix herself something to drink. She thought about JR and realized Nicholas was right. He should find out from her. Sue Ellen reached for her phone and sent JR a text message.

Hi. I’m sitting here with a cup of tea after tossing and turning. Old habits die hard, don’t they? LOL. Have any spare time tomorrow? I need to see you. Let me know where and when.

JR's eyes widened when he noticed it was Sue Ellen. He read her message, and immediately texted her back.

Hello darlin. You’re so right. I’m looking in the refrigerator right now. You know I won’t find a damn thing. Ha-ha. Tomorrow is fine. Come to my office at noon.

After Sue Ellen replied she'd be there, a devilish grin swept across his face. Well sugar, I knew you’d come crawling back.

Sorry for the misprint. It's Chapter Two, not Three:)

    Chapter Two - Regrets

"Want me to come with you? We can have lunch when you're done talking to JR," Nicholas said.

"That'd be wonderful. Nothing fancy, I'm not dressed for it. We can do some shopping, too!" Sue Ellen enthusiastically exclaimed.

Nicholas chuckled. "You look incredibly sexy in your jeans, and Uggs."

"Thank you my darlin, now let's go. My car. You drive," Sue Ellen said, and handed him the keys.

    ****

JR told Sly to cancel any appointments scheduled for the afternoon. “As soon as Sue Ellen gets here, show her in.” He eagerly awaited her arrival.

When Sue Ellen approached Sly, she was immediately sought out by Bobby. "Sue Ellen!" He was happy to see her. The feeling was mutual and they hugged briefly.

"Feels like forever. How's it going?" Bobby asked.

"I've never been better, Bobby,” Sue Ellen admitted.

“I bet. And you look great; no JR can have that effect,” Bobby told her.

“Yes, ha-ha but the real reason is that Nicholas and I were married yesterday. That's why I'm here. I wanted to tell JR in person. I owe that to him," Sue Ellen said.

"Congratulations! I’m so happy for you, but you owe that brother of mine squat, Sue Ellen,” Bobby remarked.

"I guess you're right, Bobby but we've been on pretty good terms since the divorce, and I want to keep it that way. Better to have JR as an ally, then an enemy,' Sue Ellen told him.

Bobby agreed but was troubled. "That's true but between you and me, I don't think JR will be able to handle your marriage to Nicholas. He still loves you, Sue Ellen."

Sue Ellen’s eyes widened and she felt a little pang in her heart. “He...he does?” Sue Ellen asked.

“JR would never admit it but when he’s had too much to drink he’s completely honest, if you know what I mean,” Bobby confessed. Sue Ellen took a deep breath. She wasn’t expecting Bobby’s to expose JR’s feelings.

Before Sue Ellen had a chance to say anything, JR stepped out of his office and noticed her talking to Bobby. “Hey sugar, I thought you wanted to see me not my brother.”

Sue Ellen smiled and said goodbye to Bobby. JR took her by the arm and said, “Come in darlin.”

Sue Ellen sat down on his office couch. JR pulled up a chair in front of her and asked,“So what did you need to see me about?

Sue Ellen was silent for a moment until she said, “Nicholas and I were married yesterday. I wanted you to hear it from me."

JR was stunned. He couldn’t say a thing. His facial expression said it all. “Our house is only ten minutes away from Southfork so I’ll be coming quite a lot to see John Ross and…”

Sue Ellen stopped when JR stood up. He poured himself a much needed drink then said, “Well darlin, good for you, but why did you take so long marrying your young stud?”

Sue Ellen stood up and shouted, “After having not one but two marriages from hell, can you blame me for hesitating?”

JR walked over to Sue Ellen. He caressed her face and asked, “Are you sure you didn't hesitate for another reason?”

Sue Ellen turned away from his touch. "Not at all. I married Nicholas because I love him. He loves me, and is totally committed, something you never were!"

"So very touching but I'm ready to vomit," JR said sarcastically. Sue Ellen kept her cool.

"I hope you choke, too! Listen carefully. You can’t compare to my Nicholas. He is strong but gentle, loving, devastatingly handsome, puts me on a pedestal, and...you'll love this one...so f**king fantastic in bed." Her words hit JR like a lightning rod. He didn’t speak.

Sue Ellen stared at him for a moment and said, "Don't go quiet on me JR Ewing, say something."

"I feel like a fool. When I read your text, I thought you wanted me back,” JR said.

"God, how egotistical you are. Why would you ever think that?" Sue Ellen asked.

"I thought it was just a fling with Pearce and nothing else. I figured you came to your senses and were ready to come back to me," JR implied.

“Oh my God, that is a joke, JR. How many times did I give you a chance to make things right between us? My affair with Nicholas slowly turned into love, especially when you wouldn’t make a commitment to me, but no, you had to have other women," Sue Ellen said, her heart breaking again.

'You had plenty of affairs too, Sue Ellen so don't act so innocent," JR said.

"All I ever wanted was you and only you. I loved you, JR and you betrayed me. Do you think I would have gone to bed with Nicholas, or any other man for that matter, if you hadn't cheated on me first,” Sue Ellen explained, tears in her eyes.

“I'm sorry, darlin. I know you wouldn't have. I shouldn't have said that. Its just that I've been so miserable since you left. I only want you, Sue Ellen," JR confessed, choking on his words.

Sue Ellen began to sob. “Why didn’t you say this to me before I left, or even after I filed for divorce. I would’ve dropped everything and came back to you,” Sue Ellen admitted.

JR's arms wrapped around Sue Ellen’s waist. She trembled slightly. He looked into her eyes and said, “Please forgive me, darlin. My stupid male pride got in the way. Sue Ellen, I need you,” JR told her. She pulled away.

“It’s too late, JR. I love Nicholas, and he’s all I need,” Sue Ellen said, and scurried out the door. JR sat behind his desk; his hands in his face, and full of regret.

As much as Sue Ellen is right, I feel bad for JR. That's the complexity of the characters at work here.

Chapter Three – Something old, something new

Sue Ellen sat quietly in the lobby before meeting Nicholas. She didn't want her emotions to get the best of her, and she certainly didn't want Nicholas to see her upset.

When she walked out of the building, Nicholas greeted her immediately. "Hi, what took you so long? I was worried."

"I'm fine. I talked to Bobby for awhile first. Let's eat,” Sue Ellen said. She told him everything that happened over lunch, well almost everything.

Later that night, Sue Ellen decided where she wanted to go on their honeymoon. She chose Lake Tahoe. She’d heard how beautiful and relaxing it was, and at night she could test her luck at one of the casinos. Nicholas was hesitant but didn’t let it show or explain why he was troubled. Of all places, he thought.

They honeymooned for two weeks. Sue Ellen had the time of her life. Even though Nicholas enjoyed himself, a strange feeling came over him. He felt better when they were back home.

    ****
One month later - San Antonio, Texas

Nicholas took a deep breath. He called Sue Ellen but after a few rings, it went straight into voicemail. He left her a message.

    ****
Sue Ellen was so excited to expand with the formation of her new company, Cozy Cupid; a new line of women's lounge-wear and pajamas. The style was not risqué, just super comfortable and relaxing. Valentine's Lingerie did great business with their online store, and she felt the expansion would help her profits even more. It had been in development for quite some time, and she couldn't wait to surprise Nicholas with the news.

"Thank you everyone. I'm sure we will have a very successful future together," Sue Ellen told her colleagues.

Sue Ellen headed back to her office and immediately took her phone off silent. She noticed a missed call and voicemail from Nicholas.

Hi honey. I'm in San Antonio and won't be home until tomorrow night. I'll explain then. I love you.

Sue Ellen was perplexed. She had no idea what Nicholas could be doing there. She uttered, "What the hell is he doing in San Antonio?"

    ****
    Southfork

Sue Ellen decided to see John Ross before heading home. Miss Ellie invited her to stay for dinner. She was a little leery but since she had no plans, she accepted. She sat in-between JR and John Ross. She looked across at Bobby, Pam and Christopher. Miss Ellie sat to her left and Clayton to her right. Sue Ellen smiled. Having dinner at Southfork was second nature to her and she felt right at home.

"Thank you for inviting me to dinner, Miss Ellie," Sue Ellen said.

"It was my pleasure, Sue Ellen. You know you’re still a part of this family. I miss you being here," Miss Ellie said, sincerely.

"Thank you, Miss Ellie. I miss you too. I hope you realize how much I love all of you. If JR hadn't...well it doesn't matter now." Sue Ellen stopped. She didn't want to get worked up. She kissed John Ross and said her goodbyes. As JR walked Sue Ellen to her car, Miss Ellie spoke to Clayton.

“Poor JR, it can’t be easy for him knowing she’s married to Nicholas, and seeing her leave,” Miss Ellie said.

“Of course it isn’t easy but JR destroyed her life. Do you actually believe Sue Ellen would ever want JR back?”

“I don’t know Clayton,” Miss Ellie answered.

“Well I do. Sue Ellen will never go back to him,” Clayton said, positively.

Miss Ellie took a stance. “JR loves Sue Ellen and never loved anyone else but her. I know JR did her wrong but he is still my son and I feel bad for him.”

“I understand Ellie, but JR is still JR,” Clayton said.

    ****
"It was great having you here tonight, darlin. Everyone loved seeing you, especially me. Come to dinner more often, okay?" JR told her.

"Yes, I promise I will. Goodnight, JR," Sue Ellen proclaimed and quickly drove away.

JR watched as Sue Ellen turned onto the road. He still felt the pain of losing her; emptiness like he'd never known.

Chapter Four - Family and Losing Hope

Sue Ellen called her office and told her secretary, Kelly to reschedule any appointments she had to another day. Since she had such a nice time at Southfork, she called Miss Ellie to ask about spending the day by the pool.

"Of course, Sue Ellen. Why don’t you come over for breakfast," Miss Ellie told her.

"That sounds great, Miss Ellie. I haven't had anything to eat yet. I'll be there in about 20 minutes," Sue Ellen warbled, gleefully.

"Wonderful! See you then," Miss Ellie said.

    ****

    Ewing Enterprises

JR couldn't get Sue Ellen out of his mind or concentrate on business. He looked through the photos on his phone of them together, then decided to text her a little poem.

    My Yellow Rose of Texas;
    Your beauty shines thru.
    Whenever you are with me;
    My dreams come true.

Don't worry. I'm keeping my day job. Ha-ha! It was just my way of saying how nice it was to have you back at Southfork. It meant so much to me. I love you darlin. I always will. xoxo

    ****
Sue Ellen just finished her breakfast. She was telling Miss Ellie about Lake Tahoe when JR's text came through.

"Excuse me, Miss Ellie that's probably Nicholas texting me," Sue Ellen assumed.

Miss Ellie stood up and said,"No problem. I'll get some more coffee."

Sue Ellen was disappointed it wasn't Nicholas. She couldn’t believe he didn't text her back from the previous night. She trusted him but began to worry if he was another JR all over again. She wouldn’t be able to handle if Nicholas was cheating.

When she read JR's text, Sue Ellen closed her eyes and remembered the first time JR bought her a single yellow rose. It was during their courtship. A single tear rolled down her cheek.

You always find a way of touching my heart. It was beautiful. I’m at Southfork having breakfast with Miss Ellie. Going to spend the day by the pool since I played hooky from work. I love you, too. Unfortunately, that’s where it ends.

JR felt he had some hope because she still loved him. He kept going.

I know that but I can dream, can’t I? Do you mind if I come home early, and join you? I won’t if it would make you uncomfortable.

Sue Ellen felt she had no right telling JR he couldn’t do as he wished so she wrote:

    I
t is your decision if you want to use your own pool. I’m fine either way.

“Hm, that’s not quite the answer I was hoping for but I’m outta here!” JR exclaimed. He grabbed his hat and told Sly he was going home, and for her to do the same.

    ****

    San Antonio, Texas

“Papa, I told you I love my wife and wanted to make her happy. I had to say yes or she’d think something was wrong, especially after she knows I like to gamble,” Nicholas said.

“Son, what you did was noble but your allegiance is with the family, capeesh?

“Yes, papa I understand,” Nicholas said.

“If they ever find out your name, you would be in danger. The FBI agent told me that through their surveillance, they heard that one of the Mancini soldiers saw you walking in one of the casinos.”

“Well, I’ll be careful from now on. I’m sure they couldn’t have followed me that close, Papa. I always have my guard up,” Nicholas assured him.

“I don’t think you should go back to Dallas for a few weeks. You need to stay here,” Mr. Lombardi said.

“Papa, I couldn’t possibly stay that long. I miss Sue Ellen,” Nicholas said.

“There’s no way I’m going to let…” Nicholas interrupted. “Papa, please. I can’t live my life afraid, and in hiding. I’m going home. Arrivederci,” Nicholas said. He walked out the door never to see his Papa again.

    ****
3 o’clock in the afternoon at Southfork

JR was enjoying his view of Sue Ellen coming out of the pool, her wet bathing suit almost too much for him to bear. He reached for the towel and helped dry off her body. "Thank you, JR but I can do it myself."

"No fun in that, Sue Ellen," JR kidded.

When her cell phone rang, Sue Ellen noticed it was Nicholas and pulled away from JR. “Nicholas, my darlin!” Sue Ellen exclaimed.

“Hi sweetheart, I’m coming home earlier than I thought. I miss you so much. I’m only 40 minutes away,” Nicholas told her.

“Oh Nicholas, I can’t go another day without you. Why were you in San Antonio though?” Sue Ellen asked.

“I will tell you everything when I get home,” Nicholas said.

“Okay. I love you. Bye,” Sue Ellen said, enthusiastically. She couldn’t hide her excitement, and quickly put her dry clothes over her wet bathing suit.

“Thanks for the swim, JR but I have to go,” Sue Ellen said, and ran to her car.

After hearing and witnessing Sue Ellen’s love for Nicholas, JR began to realize there was no chance for reconciliation. I’ve lost my Sue Ellen forever.

    CHAPTER FIVE

Sue Ellen raced home. She took a quick shower and waited anxiously for Nicholas.

It was the longest 40 minutes of her life. When he finally came through the door, Sue Ellen shouted, "Nicholas!" and leaped into his arms.

Sue Ellen and Nicholas' longing and desire for each other was evident. They kissed and held each other for several minutes.

"Oh baby, I've missed you so much," Nicholas said.

"I don't want to be separated from you ever again, my darlin," Sue Ellen told him."

Nicholas caressed her body, nibbled her ear and the back of her neck. "Mm, you feel and taste so good."

Sue Ellen let out a soft moan. She whispered, "I want you." They didn't waste time and went to their bedroom. A fiery passion erupted and they made love for hours until their sexual needs were fulfilled.

Sue Ellen lay there exhausted in Nicholas' arms. She caressed his chest and began to sob.

    "What's wrong honey?" Nicholas asked.

Sue Ellen sat up and said, "You make me so happy. I don't know what I'd do if I...um... lost you to someone else."

    "What? Where's that coming from? I don't understand,"Nicholas said.

"When you were in San Antonio, I thought you were pulling a JR on me. I was so upset," Sue Ellen told him.

Nicholas held her close and said,"Never. I love you, Sue Ellen. I don't want anyone but you."

"It's just that JR hurt me so much with his sluts that I...I just figured…"

"Shh, baby. I'm committed to you. I’d never be unfaithful," Nicholas said, and kissed her sweetly. He knew he would have to reassure her frequently.

“I’m sorry, Nicholas. I spent so many years being lied and cheated on by JR that I question everything. I don’t want to be that way with you.” Sue Ellen said.

Nicholas held her hand. “It’s okay. I understand. I shouldn’t have just sprung the San Antonio trip on you last minute. Let’s get dressed, and I’ll explain everything to you. I promise.”

    Southfork

“Well hello there Lucy, another failed attempt with Mitch? You must have the plague honey,” JR remarked, sarcastically.

“You must have it, too. I don't see Sue Ellen around here?" Lucy responded.

JR replied, "Sue Ellen will be back soon enough."

"That is the funniest thing I heard all day. How could she ever want your old ass back when she has Nicholas? Whew, he is such a hunk! Man oh man, her bed is probably rockin’ right now,” Lucy said, devilishly.

“Babbling blonde,” JR said, under his breath. His ego bruised, JR swallowed his drink, grabbed his car keys and stormed out of the house. Bobby and Pam busted out laughing, so did Clayton.

“Oh Lucy, that wasn't necessary,” Miss Ellie told her.

“On the contrary, Ellie I thought it was spot on. He deserved it,” Clayton said.

    “Clayton, jeez,” Miss Ellie remarked.

“Grandma, I don’t care about JR’s feelings after what he said to me. I'm proud of Sue Ellen. Took her long enough but she finally woke up and left that no good bastard,” Lucy said.

“We’re all happy for Sue Ellen. I just wish she could’ve been happy with JR. And, before anyone jumps down my throat, I know that f**king son of mine is to blame. Now let’s have a brandy before dinner.”

“Grandma!” Lucy exclaimed, and they all laughed.

    Cattlemen’s Club

“Good evening, Mr. Ewing. Your usual table or will you be sitting at the bar?” Cassie asked.

“Hello, darlin. I’ll be at the bar but give me a menu,” JR said.

“As he walked toward the bar, JR heard a man call out his name. He turned around, smiled, and said, “Is that you, Bum? How’s it going?”

“Great JR, except that I still miss Harry. I can't believe he's gone. He taught me everything I know,” Bum said.

“Harry was the best. Nothing was too hard for him, and I gave him some shady shit to do,” JR told him. They chuckled.

“Yes, I took part in some of them shit storms. Ha-ha! Hey, if you need anything, I’m at your service,” Bum told him. They exchanged business cards.

JR’s eyebrows perked up. “Hm, I think I’ll call on you right now. Sue Ellen is married to a man named Nicholas Pearce. He’s an investment banker. I need you to find out all you can about his past. Not sure where he is from, but I heard Sue Ellen asking him about San Antonio today. See what you can dig up. And, when time permits put a tail on him. Hire anyone else if you have to. Whatever you need, I’ll take care of it and you handsomely,” JR said.

“No problem, JR. One thing I know is that Harry made a great living off of you alone. No disrespect of course,” Bum said.

“None taken, in fact, I’m flattered. I just hope you find something on Pearce,” JR said.

"I rather follow Sue Ellen. She is such a beautiful lady," Bum said, with a smile.

“My ex-wife has always been devastatingly beautiful, Bum. She drives me wild to this day. In all honesty, I'm still madly in love with her. I want her back so bad," JR admitted.

"I certainly can understand that. I’ll be in touch," Bum said, and they shook on it.

After Bum left, JR thought of Sue Ellen. I'm sorry, sugar but this is my last chance.

I can't imagine Sue Ellen's really going to appreciate it when she finds out JR is snooping on her again. It might be dangerous for everyone too. But we'll see.

Lucy and JR never did get along, did they

    CHAPTER SIX - Coming clean

Sue Ellen and Nicholas sat on their couch after dinner. He took her hand in his. "You know I love you more than anything in this world."

Sue Ellen took a deep breath, and exclaimed, "Of course I do, my darlin."

"I don't want you upset with me," Nicholas said.

"What can you possibly say that would get me upset?" Sue Ellen asked.

"There is something that I should have told you about myself a long time ago, but I never thought I'd have to."

Sue Ellen was mildly concerned. She couldn't fathom what it could be. "I don't understand."

"I promise it's not about another woman or a child coming out of the woodwork," Nicholas assured her.

Sue Ellen breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Okay but please tell me what it is."

"My real name is not Nicholas Pearce," he said.

"Huh? Are you joking?" Sue Ellen asked.

Nicholas shook his head. "No. I wouldn't joke about that."

"What the hell is your name then?" Sue Ellen said, her voice raised a notch.

"Joey. Joey Lombardi. I'm from Brooklyn."

Sue Ellen was perplexed. "I...I don't understand. Why would you change your name? And why would you not tell me?"

"It's complicated, Sue Ellen. I thought it was for the best," Nicholas told her.

"I can't accept that answer, Nicholas. You need to explain why you lied to me!" Sue Ellen demanded.

"I didn't want to put you in any type of danger," Nicholas confessed.

Now Sue Ellen was distressed. "Danger? Jesus! What the f*** is going on?"

"My family was involved with organized crime. My Papa and Uncle Dominic were made men; high up in the rankings," Nicholas confided.

Sue Ellen gasped. "Oh my God, the mafia. Are you in some sort of witness protection? Is that why you changed your name?"

"Yes. My father turned in evidence to the FBI in exchange for not going to jail, especially after my Uncle was murdered. The entire family had to go into witness protection," Nicholas said.

Sue Ellen shook her head. "So your Papa is a rat. That's suicide, Nicholas."

Nicholas had a sad look on his face. "I know but it's been almost 10 years, Sue Ellen."

"Why are you telling me this now? Did something happen? Sue Ellen asked.

"I went to San Antonio because my Papa lives there. It was our relocation spot. I moved to Dallas two years ago when I thought it was safe. Papa called me that morning, and said he had to see me, so I went."

"And why did he have to see you?" Sue Ellen asked, nervously.

"He told me it may not be safe because a former mob associate spotted me in Lake Tahoe, while we were on our honeymoon. The other families have ties there," Nicholas replied.

Sue Ellen put her hands over her mouth. She stood up and said, "Oh Nicholas, it's my fault. I’m the one who wanted to go there. Oh Lord."

Nicholas held her tightly as she sobbed on his shoulder. "No baby, it's not. I'm to blame. I should have told you from the beginning and let you decide if you still wanted me. I was afraid I'd lose you. I wouldn't blame you if you left me."

Sue Ellen caressed his face. "Left you? I love you, Nicholas. I won't ever leave you."

Nicholas kissed Sue Ellen's lips softly. His tears touched Sue Ellen's heart. "What do we do now?"

"Papa wanted me to get out of Dallas and live with him in San Antonio but I turned him down. I don't want to go into hiding forever," Nicholas said.

"Oh Nicholas...I...um...did they see me with you?" Sue Ellen asked, worriedly.

"No, I don't believe they did and I don't see anyone following me. If they were, I’d be dead already,” Nicholas said, truthfully.

Sue Ellen ran her fingers through her hair. She was concerned about John Ross. To be on the safe side, she decided to only see him at Southfork, and Nicholas agreed.

"I can't tell Papa I told you. It's too risky," Nicholas confided.

"Oh Nicholas, I don't want there to be any lies or anything between us ever again. You're stuck with me," Sue Ellen said, her lips pressed against his.

"I promise. I just don't want anything to happen to you. You are my life, Sue Ellen," Nicholas said.

"And you are mine. I can't fathom living in a world without you," Sue Ellen said; they clung to each other like it was the last time.

    CHAPTER SEVEN - Feeling Safe

For the next few days, Sue Ellen and Nicholas agreed to keep a low-profile--at home in one another's loving and passionate embrace.

Sue Ellen wanted to spend time with John Ross. She told Miss Ellie she would stay at Southfork overnight, so she could spend as much time with him as possible. Miss Ellie welcomed the idea.

"I don't want to leave you, Nicholas but I can't go another day without seeing my baby," Sue Ellen explained.

"I understand, Sue Ellen. I know you miss John Ross, and I realize you enjoy visiting everyone. They were your family, and Southfork was your home for many years," Nicholas said.

"I still consider them my family," Sue Ellen admitted.

"Well I can see why. Except for JR, they are all very nice," Nicholas said, with a smile.

Sue Ellen chuckled. "Of course, but I have to admit that JR has been sweet lately. Our divorce seems to agree with him."

"Just how sweet, Sue Ellen?" Nicholas asked.

"You have nothing to worry about, my darlin," Sue Ellen assured him. Her arms wrapped around his neck. She kissed his lips quickly. "I can't be late for dinner, or I will surely get in trouble with Miss Ellie," Sue Ellen said, with a laugh.

"One more kiss for the road?" Nicholas asked.

Sue Ellen said, "Mm, you better believe it."

Sue Ellen kissed his lips passionately. He looked at her with desire in his eyes. She glanced at the clock and said, "On second thought, who cares if I'm a few minutes late," and they feverishly made love.

Before Sue Ellen left, she clung to Nicholas as he whispered, "I love you, babe."

"I love you too, my darlin. See you soon," Sue Ellen told him and walked out the door.

As Sue Ellen started her car, a strange feeling came over her that she couldn't explain. She hated to leave, but John Ross took precedence over anything else in her life.

    SOUTHFORK

Sue Ellen parked her car, and sat there, momentarily. She felt safe; something she hadn't completely felt since Nicholas' confession. She hid her uneasiness the best she could from him.

As Sue Ellen opened Southfork’s front door, she heard familiar Ewing voices and it warmed her heart. When she went into the living room she said, “Hello everybody.” Her radiant smile and beauty gave JR’s heart a pang.

“Sue Ellen, darlin!” JR said, and walked over to her. He kissed her cheek and put his arm around her waist. When John Ross approached, she went down on one knee to give him a big hug and kiss.

"My baby, I missed you," Sue Ellen said.

"Oh Mama, I'm not a baby," John Ross complained.

Sue Ellen caressed his face. "You'll always be my baby."

The rest of the Ewing clan gave her a warm welcome. “Sorry I’m late Miss Ellie. Something came up that I had to take care of,” Sue Ellen said.

“It’s okay, Sue Ellen we were just about to sit down,” Miss Ellie assured her.

“Can I get you a club soda, sugar?” JR asked. Sue Ellen nodded in agreement.

“We’ll be right there, Mama,” JR said. He took Sue Ellen by the arm and led her to the bar and poured her a drink.

“You look sensational, sugar. After you put John Ross to sleep tonight, how about you mosey into my room for old time’s sake?" JR asked.

Even though Sue Ellen was still attracted to him, she smiled then said, “I’m not into old anymore, JR but thanks anyway,” and walked into the dining room.

    ****

It was 9 o’clock and Nicholas couldn’t get Sue Ellen out of his mind. He worried about their future. His main focus was to keep Sue Ellen safe. No sooner had he picked up the phone to call her, he received a text message from an unknown number.

    CHAPTER EIGHT

    SOUTHFORK

Sue Ellen sat on the edge of John Ross's bed and asked, “Do you know what I wish for Mom?"

Sue Ellen kissed his forehead, and smiled at him lovingly. "What?"

"I wish you’d love Daddy, so we could be a family again," John Ross said.

Sue Ellen got teary-eyed. She looked into John Ross's sad eyes. "Oh John Ross, I do love your Daddy. I never stopped."

John Ross was confused. "Then why did you leave us, Mama?"

"Daddy and I drifted apart, but it wasn’t because we didn't love each other. Marriage takes commitment, and faithfulness, John Ross and unfortunately your Dad had a hard time following that,” Sue Ellen told him.

“You mean he kissed other girls?” John Ross asked.

Sue Ellen attempted a smile. “Yes, among other things that I think I will let your Daddy explain to you.”

“You mean sex, don’t you Mama?” John Ross inquired.

Sue Ellen’s eyebrows rose. “John Ross? What have...w
ell, let your Dad explain it better to you,” Sue Ellen said. She kissed his forehead.

“Goodnight Mama. I hope you can forgive Daddy because he misses you,” John Ross told her.

Sue Ellen wasn’t able to say anything else. She smiled and left his room and went immediately into her old bedroom. While she put on her nightgown, she remembered how many times her and JR had separate bedrooms as a result of his betrayals; the same emotions returning. She sobbed for a few minutes, but with a knock on her door she regained her composure.

    "Come in," Sue Ellen said.

JR opened the door slowly and walked in. "Hey sugar, you okay?"

"Yes, why wouldn't I be?" Sue Ellen asked.

"Come on, Sue Ellen. I heard you crying. Tell me what's wrong?" JR said, and closed the door behind him.

"You. What else? Sitting alone in my old room had me thinking about us, and how many chances I gave you to change. I told you before I'd never have opened myself up to fall in love with another man, but I have. It hurts me to this day, despite how much Nicholas means to me. I wanted you, and you alone but that's over," Sue Ellen told him; tears rolling down her face.

JR sat down and put his arm around her. He eased her head on his shoulder and her crying returned. He couldn't hold back his feelings seeing her in so much pain, combined with the guilt he felt. His sincere sobs touched Sue Ellen's heart and she wrapped her left arm around him.

They separated after a few moments; their hands held on to each other. "I know saying I'm sorry is not going to fix anything. All I can say is that I loved you, and only you. I still do."

Sue Ellen gazed into his watery blue eyes and said, "And I never stopped loving you." She
loved Nicholas but her never ending love for JR was difficult for any man to overcome.

JR delicately lifted Sue Ellen's chin with his finger. She caressed his face, and kissed his awaiting lips sweetly. The love they still shared hard to ignore.

    ****

Nicholas read the message and panicked. He knew what he had to do. Into the bedroom he went, and took out the gun he kept in his bedside drawer. He picked up the phone and hit the button to call Sue Ellen.

I'm a JR/SE fan, but SE is no better than JR right now. She can't be married to one man and seeking comfort from another, it's not fair to Nicholas.

Bring on the drama though

    CHAPTER NINE

Sue Ellen pulled back from JR. She put her fingers on his lips. "No, JR. I can’t," she said, softly.

Sue Ellen stood up and asked JR to go. He was disappointed but walked toward her and said, "I understand, darlin. I love you." She
closed the door and no sooner did she sit down, her phone rang. She perked up when it was Nicholas; a tinge of guilt in her mind; relief in her heart.

"Hi, my darlin!" Sue Ellen said, eagerly.

"Sue Ellen, I can't talk long," Nicholas said.

    "Why? What's wrong?"Sue Ellen asked.

"Listen, I got a message on my phone. I can't risk staying here, they know."

Sue Ellen panicked. "Oh my God, Nicholas. Where are we going to go?"

"You can't go with me, Sue Ellen. It's too dangerous. First thing I want you to do is destroy your phone. There may be a trace on it," Nicholas warned her.

"Nicholas, I want to go with you. I can’t…" He interrupted her with a shush.

"Sue Ellen, baby, I love you. If there was another way, I'd do it. If something ever happened to you, I'd die," Nicholas told her, his voice cracked.

Sue Ellen was beside herself. "No, I can’t live without you. I told you I’d never leave."

"I know but we can’t risk it. Stay with the Ewings for a few more days, or check into a hotel. Please don't go back to the house for any reason," Nicholas said.

"But when are you coming back?" Sue Ellen asked, sobbing.

"Goodbye, Sue Ellen,” Nicholas said, and quickly hung up the phone.

"No wait…Nicholas!" Sue Ellen shouted. She dialed his phone and it immediately went into voicemail.

Sue Ellen sat there shaking uncontrollably. She was devastated, and scared of Nicholas' fate, not to mention her own.

    ****
JR couldn’t fall asleep knowing Sue Ellen was only feet away from him. He could still taste the sweetness of her lips. She felt so good in his arms. His thoughts were interrupted by Bum’s text message.

Hitting minor snags with background but I’ll get it soon. An hour ago, Pearce got in his car with suitcases, and is driving on Interstate 35 right now, heading toward San Antonio. We’re following at a safe distance.

JR responded to Bum immediately. Good work. Tell me as soon as you find out anything else. He couldn't put his finger on what was going on but he knew Bum would come through for him.

Jesus, what the hell is the fascination with San Antonio? Does Sue Ellen know? Do I tell her?

    ****
What if I never see Nicholas again? Oh my God, what if he is murdered? She was beside herself with worry.

Sue Ellen knew there was only one thing that would help calm her nerves; a drink. It was something she vowed she'd never do again—until now. She quietly left her room, and crept down the staircase. She headed to the bar and opened the underneath cabinet.

Sue Ellen took a deep breath, and mumbled several reasons why her actions were justified. She reached in and took out a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka, and went back to her room. It took the last drop of vodka for her to collapse into a deep sleep—Sue Ellen’s slow fade into oblivion.

    ****
    San Antonio

Nicholas parked his car, and took out his key to the house but when he reached the door, it was unlocked. He turned the knob as quietly as possible and crept in. He went from room to room until he saw his Papa; face down in bed—a gunshot through the back of his head.

    CHAPTER TEN

"Papa!" Nicholas screamed. He knew that his Father, former mobster Joseph Lombardi was dead.

Instead of calling the police, he picked up the house phone and dialed the FBI agent that kept in contact with his Papa.

"This better be good" Agent Anderson said.

"Hey, this is Nicholas. My Dad has been mur...he swallowed hard…murdered!" Nicholas screamed.

Without any emotion, the Agent said, "Don't touch anything. I will get someone over there right away."

"Hurry!" Nicholas exclaimed, and went downstairs to wait. He locked the front door. He blamed himself for his Papa's death and began to sob, then panic set in; he wasn't alone.

    ****
Bum texted JR. He was still awake.

He is at the residence of Joseph Pearce. I assume a parent or relative. I saw two men coming out of the back of the house approximately 20 minutes after he went in. They got into a white Cadillac Escalade, and drove away. I got everything on video.

Twenty minutes later a black Chevy Van pulled up and knocked the door down. I don't have a good feeling about any of this. I fear something bad has happened.

JR got up and paced the floor. Oh my God, what type of character did Sue Ellen get herself involved with?

JR texted Bum back, and told him to leave if he felt his life was in danger. He put on his robe and knocked on Sue Ellen's door. He had to tell her what was going on. When she didn't respond after a few knocks, he decided he better wait until morning, and headed back to his room.

    ****
The sunlight peeked into her room. Sue Ellen felt like a samba band was playing in her head. She hadn't had a headache of this magnitude in so long. She immediately thought about Nicholas, and prayed he was okay.

When she started to get out of bed, there was a knock on her door.

"Come in," Sue Ellen said, putting on her robe.

It was JR, and he looked troubled. He managed a good morning.

"Hi, JR. I'm sorry about last night. I just couldn't go to bed with you," Sue Ellen said.

"Darlin, that's not important. I...um...think you better sit down," JR said, and shut the door.
