    I dunno
In all honesty - Falcon Crest was pretty brutal when it came to kill off characters.

Do we think they should've been... less? Certainly Maggie didn't have to die that way. OMG boring MAGGIE.

I kind of admire their bravery. Few things happen in a soap that are as dramatic as killing off an important character. People often complain about Mickey and Rebecca being killed on Dallas cause they were great characters, but sometimes you gotta kill off great characters. It's all very well killing off minor characters but it doesn't pack the punch of occasionally killing off established and beloved ones. However most soaps will shy away from killing off anyone from the core main cast, or when they do they back pedal and we have them coming back from the dead. Not so with Falcon Crest.

Chase's death definitely changed the dynamic of the show, and not for the better, but there was also a sense that the character's time was up. Maggie's death, although it was shocking, I was kind of ok with cause if it's your final season why not go all out. Plus, she'd already been through the A to Z of soap calamities. Their big mistake was killing off Melissa, and I think they knew it.

Agreed - Melissa wasn't done yet. Melissa needed her Peter Stavros. She needed her own feet. Time for Richard and Angela to bound and time for Melissa to wind up would have been much better spent.

Season 8: instead of Lance's good bye to Melissa, a mysterious young man pledges his love to her and that he'll take care of Falcon Crest for her and get Joseph back. He holds her near lifeless body.

This is someone tied to the 13 out to avenge his family against Richard and to keep Falcon Crest from Angela for Melissa - the mother and son join forces not only in the events we saw following what was Melissa death but in this new story line as well. This man is wealthy like Peter Stavros, an old flame of Melissa's from boarding school, someone who her father disapproved of. He fights Cole in court for custody of Joseph, setting him up for abuse and neglect over which Maggie is devastated. He builds up Falcon Crest at the center of a great empire owned by Melissa as she recuperates and grows stronger.

This man and Lance become enemies. Melissa loves Lance and Lance loves Pilar while this man loves Melissa - not really a triangle. In the end both this man and Lance die. Melissa has a wine empire, this man's fortune and connections, her son and Falcon Crest. She vows her son will have it all as the oldest son of the oldest son of the oldest son, the only Gioberti heir. She mourns Lance and blames Angela for keeping him from her. She also has Angela and Richard's hatred for his death. This would have allowed Jane Wymans health to be taken into account and a war to brew between Melissa and Richard. Also it would have Richard out to gain his son's inheritance.

Anyway could have been an idea and I think much better then the change that focused on the Oretega and Sharpe families. They'd have stayed focused on the Channings verses the Giobertis (Agretti's). If they wanted diversity the man in love with Melissa could have been black or Hispanic.

Melissa needed this wealthy businessman in season 8 very much and how things would have improved for her, with no requirement for Samantha Ross.

Agreed. Some one to show her business, teacher her what Angela never did, so when he's going she's able to stand on her own two feet - Melissa with Jospeh vs Richard with Michael, Gioberti vs Channing. Instead by getting rid of Melissa they began the end of the show. Melissa wasn't done as a character. Awe what could have been.
