Till he was cured by Claudia, obviously.
Until such time they ran out of marmalade and began looking at alternatives?
Since "malade" clearly means "sick", i'm very surprised the french translated it that way. That's clearly altering the material. But why? Did the french media want to pretend the audience doesn't know of gay people and what they do?! Did they think their audience is stupid?
I'm glad the German dubbing was always very accurate on these things. They said "Steven ist schwul!" - which meant the exact same thing than in the original - as it should be.
And then later, when there was an argument between Adam and Steven and Alexis came in and asked Adam "What did you call him? A fag-got?" the translation was accurate as well - "Wie hast Du ihn denn genannt? Eine TUNTE??" - which meant - exactly that.
With France still a rather conservative RC country in the ‘80s, perhaps the majority of folk thought of gayness as a sickness, and the dubber was trying to be delicate about it all.
Seriously? The land of ooh-la-la?
France was less conservative than the USA, there was plenty of nudity in the 80's !
But the show was broadcasted on daytime in local stations so maybe someone thought it should be more appropriate to not say "homosexual". However, it was used in other episodes so it's hard to say. Maybe the word "gay" was misunderstood by the translator. In another episode (from late season 5), Claudia tells Blake she can't make Steven "transexual" instead of saying she can't make a gay man straight.
Now I’m up to Season 2 and we’re fighting over Fallon’s unborn baby. Forgive me if I missed it, but no one has mentioned anything about Miles raping Fallon...and I’m horrified. It’s come out that Miles and Fallon were still married when she conceived and Miles is all: I have a right! It’s my baby! And Fallon is all:Jeff! Jeff (tears and shaking and crumbling)! Jeff!
It’s like it has to be a secret Miles raped her, like oh we don’t talk about that. He even told Sable he raped her and I couldn’t believe she said to him something like: oh, dahling, you couldn’t help yourself.
When Adam raped Kirby, Blake called it an act of violence and control and then Jeff nearly killed Adam. So here we are again. Rape. Rape! It’s completely horrible and no one is talking about it. I’m shocked that Sable- a woman, a mother!- would brush it off for her son, only to tell Blake years later that she herself was raped.
So we’re all concerned about Miles rights to Fallon’s baby! Well since when does a rapist have any rights?!
I would have loved for the reveal to have had Cecil been the one to have raped Sable.
Was there one?
Sure you've got the right show?
From when man made laws, I dare say.
It took until the first decade of this century for France to declassify transgenderism as a mental illness okay, and even with that France was the first country in the world to do so, according to wiki, so hey!
Sounds like there was still a tug-of-war between progressive and conservative mores in French society, which progressive laws that gave equal rights couldn't quite eradicate fast enough.
Blake would know of course.
Which in the eyes of the law at the time wasn't quite the same thing: conjugal rights and all that.
Ummmmm.....Cecil was Sable’s brother-in-law. This would explain why Cecil didn’t mention Miles when Fallon asked him if he had any other nephews for her to sleep with in Season 01 of Dynasty - he already knew Miles and Monica were his children and knew Miles wasn’t his nephew......
Ah, ok, you meant Sable's rape story on Dynasty. Because there was no Sable/Sabella rape story on The Colbys. There was another one though....
I've no memory of Fallon asking Cecil that question in S1 of Dynasty.
Making Cecil Sable's rapist -- if she was raped -- could be used to explain why Cecil was disinherited, as Connie mentioned in S6. The possibility could be that their father knew.
But I strongly feel a future season (if there had been one or more beyond S9) should have cleared up which of Sable's reveals was the truthful one. What she told Monica? Or, what she told Blake?
What Sable told Blake in S9 should be highly suspect: both Jeff and Alexis said Sable was trying to get her hooks into Blake. What better way than that did she have to explain why Jason wasn't her children's biological father? I'm constantly surprised by how many folk dismiss what she told Monica; by how the rape story has come to prevail like it were fact.
So what would have made Cecil (before his marriage to Alexis) make Jeff (his nephew) his sole heir and not give anything to his other 'nephew' and 'niece'(s)?
ETA: Didn't Cecil tell Jeff he was the last of the Colbys?
....exactly what early Dynasty Cecil said about his family. Is there any way to reconcile organically what Cecil said in the earlier seasons with Jeff saying to Blake in front of Jason in S6 that his uncle Cecil had told him that his uncle Jason wouldn't be interested in hearing anything Jeff had to say?
Although I always liked DYNASTY S2's suggestion that Cecil would-stab-his-mother-in-the-back-to-make-a-deal suggestion from Blake --- supposedly, it was just an off-the-cuff line, but Cecil was so enraged by it, what if there had been a history to it? The implication that Cecil had somehow been the cause of the death of the Colby matriarch would have been an interesting seed for the beginning of THE COLBYS and would certainly be a good reason to disinherit him.
Fallon def made a flippant comment and Cecil never mentioned Miles. Granted, Miles didn’t exist at this point, I’m just trying to make sense out of the omission.
Sable’s rape also makes sense due to the comment Constance made when she asked Sable what happened to the nice young girl Sable used to be. The rape happened and Constance never knew it....
But do it to make a deal? Hmmm. Would he really, just for that?
Something that's bothered me on The Colbys is the suggestion in S2 that Cecil was the eldest grandson -- Sable, when talking about how the first grandchild is always the favoured one, pointed out Jason's jealousy that his beloved granpa favoured Cecil.
This if true, would contradict Jason saying in S1 that he was the firstborn when handing Jeff the heirloom pocket watch to pass to LB. Unless, there was no contradiction....
What if, Cecil was the presumed first-born son and Jason was the next son, only at some point the family discovered that Cecil was a bastard child and not a true Colby. Which resulted in him being disinherited by his father. (Because Andrew -- I forget if that was his name or not -- was possibly that sort of man: he put that stuff about special family stock to be given only to blood Colbys in his will, as Sable on TC found out. Recall also Miles, when he thought Jeff wasn't a Colby, saying his granddad would be spinning in his grave about the shares given to Jeff.)
Cause enough for Cecil to be enraged at his mother. Maybe he did lash out literally and caused her death, intended or not. Might explain Jason on TC mentioning the room his mother died in -- which could have been some foreshadowing written in because remember also, that Mr Carter (Channing's uncle) had alluded to skeletons in the Colby closet before he was scared off the scene by Jason blasting a flower pot to pieces.
But, for the record, TC had Philip as the disinherited son. But was silent on a great many things about Cecil. I wonder if Cecil would have been the focus of a later season, if TC had one. Making him another disinherited son on TC would have been par for the course for TC, with its mirror/twinning storylines.
Oh... I was happy to not remember that...
I'm quite sure there were many other translation mistakes... That's why I always prefer original language version.
And what about the voices? Sometimes they chose the worst dubbing voices, having nothing to do with the originals. Tv series "Friends" is one of the best illustration for that.
And when they change the dubbing voices, sometimes with no reason... It's so upsetting.
Emma Samms Fallon had 3 different voices in France. Or maybe her voice felt different because she was "malade" too
I need to ask to foreign countries members here :
Did they kept PSM's dubbing voice for Emma? I would have loved that for French ES Fallon...
Fallon's character was raped multiple times by the COLBYS writers/directors. Only the UFO (and cancellation) could save her.
