So many great ones to choose from but which are your favourites and why? Do you like all the films in the franchise or just some?

I've listed some of my favourites but feel free to add to them :)

I love the Scream franchise but the 3rd one is the poorest imo. Love Jaws but the 3rd is also dicey and the 4th is debateable.

I think Star Wars is superior in its field whether you think of it as sequels, a franchise or a trilogy.

Halloween is the stand out for me.

    Then others I love

    Poltergeist
    Star Trek
    A Nightmare on Elm Street
    Scream
    Star Wars
    Wrong Turn
    Superman
    The Matrix
    Lord of the Rings
    Highlander
    Terminator

I suspect Avatar will be on my list in a few years.

Man did he creep me out when I was younger.

I still hear that song he sings

" God is in his holy temple.
    Earthly thoughts, be silent now"

The Carry On... films would top my list.

And I have to mention the Omen, Spider-Man and Alien films which would probably both be in my top half dozen franchises.

I'm rather surprised nobody's mentioned the Bond series yet. Or Harry Potter.

I have a feeling I'd be a big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe if I ever got round to watching them. I'm a comics fan though, so it could go either way.

Apart from Indy, Star Wars and (arguably) the Lecter films, all of the choices in the poll are examples of the law of diminishing returns that seems to pervade Hollywood franchises, with each sequel of a lower standard than the one before. That's not to say I don't enjoy them. The Scream series and two thirds of the Halloween films are fun.

From the list I'm going to vote for perhaps the most drastic case of diminishing returns: the Jaws films. Apart from the first film (which is one of the best of all time) they're all pretty poor quality.

I don't consider it the best franchise by any stretch. Even the continuity is very wobbly. But having grown up with them I do have a soft spot and we're choosing our favourites after all.

It helps my enjoyment of the series in adulthood if I view them this way:

    Jaws is a film
    Jaws 2 is a movie
    Jaws 3 is a b-movie
Jaws The Revenge is a comedy

Just out of interest, is there a difference between a franchise and a film series? Are there specific criteria that a franchise has to have?

Well, it's only been me & Sarah commenting so far

And I'm not a fan of either Bond or Potter.

I did enjoy the first Potter movie, but it went downhill after that. I fell asleep during the fourth instalment and never looked at any more.

Oh yes. :D Well in that case, I take it all back. ;)

I've enjoyed both series, but I feel like only a casual fan compared to some of the superfans that are out there for both.

I've got all the Bond films up to Casino Royale on Blu Ray and always find them very entertaining. I'd definitely rank them as among the best franchises given how long they've run and all the iconography attached to them. But somehow I don't feel I know them well enough to call it a favourite franchise (some of the films in particular eras all blend together for me. I have trouble separating them).

It's impressive they're still putting out quality films all these decades later. I think of Bond as the Coronation Street of the film world.

Despite not liking the movies, the Potter rides at Universal are bloody epic. So friggin' good that each time I ride them I come off wanting to watch the movies.

Then when I get home I remember I don't like the movies and I would only be watching them to re-live the experience of the rides.

    Just no.

They took away THE JAWS RIDE.

This far surpasses ANY EPICNESS OF ANY FLYING WIZARD BRAT.

    I cannot forgive.

Well, you will just have to travel further west over to Hollywood for the Jaws ride :D

In the meantime, enjoy this. :D

Yes until he flies west and takes that away too. Little Bastard.

I'd have Jaws eat him. Thank you Ome, the untold hours I have spent sailing round Amity - aaaah. I can even smell it.

Well my favorites would be "Lord of the Rings" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" but well since I couldn't vote for them I voted for...crap it's not multiple choice... :(
I wanted to vote Scream, Jurassic Park and Star Wars but well ok I ended up voting Jurassic Park since it's the only franchise of that list that I have watched all the movies in.

Also I think Bond should have been on that list since it's the longest and most successful movie franchise there is.

Perhaps it has more to do with the brand, i.e. a story or character derived from the original source, instead of being based on its own source.
I guess that excludes Harry Potter, Lord Of The Rings and James Bond from the franchises.

    Thanks Karin :)

I didn't put it on the list because as I stated - it was a list of my personal favourites, of which Bond is not one - so it's a personal poll. The question is what YOUR favourite is, not what the most successful is.
