Filoli was such a big part of why Dynasty made Dallas look parochial (not that Dallas needed a lot of help with that). I did go there back in 1988 on my first ever visit to the US (little did I know I would end up living here), but only saw the outside and gardens. Filoli really was its own main character on Dynasty, at least in the early seasons when they even bothered to show footage of it.

Great video, but it is a little bit disturbing to see the staircase on the wrong side. :D

Wow, I would really like to visit the mansion...

I wonder why the creators chose Denver of all places. I understand why, but I think it's kind of sad that noting was actually filmed in Denver.

How far is it from the affluent communities of Denver to the downtown area i.e. how long would it take Blake to drive to work every day?

Is there really a mountainous elite enclave within regular driving distance of the city?

I'm sure there must be. The mountains are only about 10 or 15 miles to the west of the city.

The location survived the original Bible, where the city had more of a significance than it ended up being once they changed the title to Dynasty. Esther Shapiro had titled her project "Mile High." She thought the symbolism of the city's nickname was going to give it depth or what else she imagined. My hunch: she had airplane sex on the brain.

From what I've heard, they originally titled it "Oil" (which doesn't even sound right for the pilot episode) and that everyone hated it so much they ran a fifty choice contest and "Mile High" came in at #1. ("Oil" was dead last).

Supposedly, ABC thought people might be misled into thinking it was a highschool show, so everybody gravitated to "Dynasty" which had come in fourth or fifth.

Although I like "Dynasty" as a title, I often wonder if "Die Nasty" doomed the show as a post-hypnotic suggestion kind of deal. While "Mile High" sounds much more optimistic.

Okay so apparently the Filoli mansion is open for tourists as I took a tour of the property while on vacation in California. :)

I'm back home again now but figured I'd share my experience with you all. First of all it was such a surreal feeling to actually walk up to the house and press down the handle to the doorknob and walk into the Carrington Mansion! :D

I was so excited. What I found indoors both reminded of the show and not. The hallway looks nothing like on the show. But the ballroom, library and pantry looks almost exactly like on the show and it made me so excited as I felt like I was actually walking around at the same place as they had been filming so many years ago. I know the rooms were recreated for the soundstages in Hollywood but still the house itself does exist and unlike Southfork that looks nothing like it's supposed to on the inside the Carrington Mansion was actually recognizable. So walking around there I could totally picture Blake, Alexis, Krystle, Fallon etc in these locations. It was so cool! :spinning:

It was a bit hard to find it from the road and my sister and I ended up driving 30 minutes in the wrong direction before we asked someone how to find it and realized that we had missed Canada Road. :lolo:

The tour of the mansion cost 25 dollars because it was Christmas time and all the decorations were up. But it was totally worth it. My sister who is not a fan of Dynasty also really enjoyed visiting the house and even told me she liked it more than Hearst Castle! :)

So if anyone of you are ever in the San Francisco area I can highly recommend you to visit this place. For more information about which hours they are open please visit their homepage:

Oh and finally here's some photos that I took:

The library. Somehow I could just picture Blake sitting behind his desk...

The pantry and although this was typically Hilda Gunnarson's domain I couldn't help but thinking of this particular Blake and Alexis scene when I was there...

Ohh I love how close to the real house the show was, it makes it slightly more satisfying than walking into Southfork lol

Great photos, I've never been to Filoli, so thanks for sharing - do you have any more?

I believe the small building is a summer house and not Alexis's studio, which I don't think actually exists at Filoli, though I am willing to be corrected.

I too recommend the Filoli guide book available on Amazon, especially for those who can't go and see it in person.

Yes, correct. Alexis' art studio was a fake building front somewhere on a property around Los Angeles.

I totally agree with you @Miss Texas 1967 . The fact that the house actually looks a lot like it did on the show is very gratifying when you visit it. :)

Yes I do have a few more photos:

    Jennys bilder 1578.JPG
This is the kitchen. I think it was only used on the show like once...

    uvs171215-010.JPG

and they cut it together with footage shot in the patry room to make it seem like it was one massive kitchen instead of two rooms...

    California2017 2147.JPG
    The end of the hallway

    uvs171215-013.JPG
The hallway was actually as long as on this photo and ran through most of the house.

    California2017 2184.JPG
I'm not sure if this room was used on the show.

    uvs171215-015.JPG
But it could be this room...

    California2017 2179.JPG
This is the reception room. Taking a closer look on my photos it turns out that the foyer actually had doors that leads into this room. Just like on the show...

    uvs171215-017.JPG
The difference of course being that where the stairs was were this wall.

    California2017 2180.JPG

Because the stairs was in another room...

    California2017 2155.JPG

and for some reason they decided to mirror the stairs on the show. So it would look more "right" if you flipped this photo!

The door in the background leads into the ballroom btw.

That was the living room used in the pilot in which Jeff and Steven had their Oscar Wilde is a Bulgarian exchange -- it's across the Reception Room from the Library and, incidentally, when Steven looks out the window onto the wedding garden party, he really is looking out on it.

When they reproduced the sets in Hollywood after the pilot, they moved this room to across the main hail from the library.
