Who Should Miss Ellie be with if she did not marry Clayton? How about Carter McKay, Frank Crutcher aka Walter Lankershim, Punk Anderson, Wes Parmalee, or my choice of a younger man? Imagine the reactions of everyone, especially J.R.

I can't picture Miss Ellie with Carter McKay, and Frank Crutcher didn't seem right either.

    Clayton was the best bet.

But having said that, Jock was the best of them all.

Nah Miss Ellie and Clayton was a great match. I wouldn't want her with anyone else. :)

Of course Jock and Miss Ellie were a great pair too and the foundation for the entire Ewing family. But since Jim Davis died so early on I think they did the right call to "replace" him with Clayton and also allowing Howard Keel to be his own character. He was not just a Jock replacement since Clayton and Jock were similar but also different.

I agree with Swami and Karen

One possiblity (if he hadn't died in the show) would be Sam Culver. How do you like this storyline for Barbara Bel Geddes:

Donna and Sam divorce, due to the age difference. Sam used to run with Jock and his buddies, so Miss Ellie and Sam have many mutual friends.

Things start out great, and as a friend of Jocks, the boys allow Sam to use his influence to help Ewing Oil. They don't realize that every time he helps them, he entrenches himself more and more into the company.

This time, it is BOBBY who is suspicious, and he shares these misgivings with Miss Ellie. We find out that Miss Ellie has also become suspicious of Sam Culver. Evidence starts piling up that Sam is not the perfect gentleman that he claims to be.

As happens in the original series, it is discovered that Sam Culver and Jock Ewing destroyed Sam's uncle in a deal so horribly that Sam's uncle commited suicide. And now it is clear that Sam is trying to take control of Ewing Oil, and has already gone a long way towards making this happen.

The closing scene for this cliffhanger belongs to the talented Barbara Bel Geddes--

Miss Ellie: "J.R., I've been married to your father for many years and know about his shady deals and his ruthless business sense without understanding the details. And I've watched you grow up and witnessed even more shady dealings and ruthlessness without wanting to know the details.

"Well, now is the time, J.R. . . I need you to teach me every dirty trick your Daddy tever aught you. And I need you to teach me every underhanded scheme that you have ever figured out since them. Don't hold anything back and don't spare my feelings. Teach me every cunning move you know how to make. I'm ready for war."

Interesting idea that brings out the tough side in Miss Ellie that was definitely there. But I still prefer her to be happy with Clayton. :)

I can understand that, especially since Howard Keel is such a great actor.

And his baritone voice-- I could listen to that man read a phone book.

I liked Clayton. His introduction to Dallas was subtle and had just the right amount of substance to create friction/history with J.R. He was his own man. Besides. Howard and Barbara Bel had great chemistry. A recent viewing of Lorimar Dallas introduced the character of Frank Crutcher. I liked the actor and character but his introduction was out of left field. The writers had already established Clayton as a thorn in JR's side so there was something to play with there.

He was into older women so I think Ellie might have been in with a chance.

Ellie & Clayton were the embodiment of Santa and Mrs Claus.

No one other than Clayton could make that duo work.

And since Clayton really wanted Sue Ellen I could see a poignant ménage a quatre developing, maybe a menage a cinq if you'd include the letterbox.

I really liked Miss Ellie and Clayton together. Their whole several season arc held great appeal. Huge apologies to Jock fans, forgive my blaspheming, but I think Clayton treated Ellie nicer than Jock did and I preferred her with Clayton. Frank was a nice little inbetween that ended at the right time (unlike Mickey Trotter who should’ve been around at LEAST one more season longer but I digress). However I would have been curious to see the Wes Parmesan story pan out a little more and see what else might have developed there? Ben Stivers even more so cause there shouldn’t have been a dream lol

You didn't think the Wes Parmesan story was a bit cheesy?

I didn’t mind it at all. I could name a long list of cheesy, dull or outright ludicrous stories before that one lol

Right. That ridiculous season 13 Lady Jessica Roquefort story line for example!

Clayton was a great match for Miss Ellie! I thought Frank Crutcher seemed kind of creepy.

    Did it!

I thought it was grate myself.

Steve Forrest Gateau played the bun role very well I thought.

I wish he had stayed on as Jock it would've been interesting to see him & Clayton bun fighting over Ellie. ;) :)

I always expected him to take Miss Ellie to that sordid brothel he took Steven on "Dynasty"´s first season and propose her a new "business" (!!).

I agree that they introduced Clayton without making it seem forced. Howard Keel and Barbara Bel Geddes seemed very comfortable in their scenes together. Exactly like you would hope Clayton and Miss Ellie would feel.

I doubt there was any intention to pair them up at first. The role of Dusty's father was a very minor one to begin with.
