I hadn't seen any of these since the late 80s but someone has posted a few Italian opening sequence creations on YouTube over the last few months

While the Germans left the openings pretty much intact (apart from replacing the aerial view of the ocean/Palos Verdes with a sunset to cover the original title)

the French also left the opening intact (apart from freezing the ocean fly-over to then plaster the French title "Cote Ouest" on the screen) but they replaced the theme with the god-awful French song

... the Italians created their own titles apart from a brief period where they showed the original (with amended title "California")!!

    Season 5/6

Season 8/9 - note the re-ordering of the cast... not in alphabetical order, not it order of generally accepted importance or seniority either! And why the Golden Gate Bridge? It's only about 400 miles from "Knots Landing"!

Season 5 original (with Italian title)

Does anyone have links or recordings of any other international versions?

Nope totally real. I saw them on Italian TV many, many years ago.

The quality of title sequences and graphics in the 80s/90s was not great in Italy. Check out this Guiding Light opening

EDIT: ignore this one. That’s actually a fan made opening lol. I’ll dig up a few other ones.

Sometimes I think I lived in an alternate world when I was young(er). My memory of the 80s have not much to do with "all that"... Oh and yeah, these openings look fake as Hell (as Jock Ewing would say!).

    Hi Gabriele

Some Italian intros were so strange. I don't think it happens now?

I haven't been able to find the Santa Barbara intro anywhere :( It seems that RAI DUE at some point used the American opening and that's all that's on YouTube. I do remember it used to be very Italian at some point!

The Germans changed the SB opening as well to include scenes and cast names (the second one even has spelling mistakes :eck:)

And a completely new opening for Guiding Light as well (until the early 90s at least when they managed to "germanize" the original openings

I really should have names this "International Knots openings" and I really should stop searching the internet (slow week at work haha)!

Here are season 10 and 12 from Quebec where the show was not called "Cote Ouest" like in France but instead titled "Les Heritiers du Reve".

I wonder what the point of that was. After all, "Knots Landing" was a made-up name that wouldn't have meant anything to Americans either.
I do like the billing of Michele and Kevin as a couple, though.

I think California had (and still has) a great appeal to people in most countries... sun, beaches, Hollywood, rich people...

In Spain it was called California as well.

In Germany it was meant to be called California as well initially but this was changed at the last minute to “Unter der Sonne Kaliforniens” (Under the Californian sun). Still sticking California in the title but adding some mystery.

In France it was always “Cote Ouest” (West Coast), which I think was decided AFTER they wrote the awful French theme for it.

I think generally, and I know in Germany this was definitely part of the consideration, most languages would be unable to pronounce a soft K so Knots Landing would have sounded weird.

In Venezuela it was called “Vecinos y amigos” by the way - Neigbours and friends. Another example where two countries with the same language gave it different titles (as with France and the Quebec version).

I'm guessing part of the reason it was called 'California' is that it was a spin off of 'Dallas', which was set in Dallas and called 'Dallas', so they did the same thing with Knots so it was more on brand.

Also the silent 'k' would be an issue for non English speakers.

These are great. I can't stop re-playing the 26 second version. It's so punchy. And the four box imagery at the end, along with the attractive California logo and the music all make it feel very 1970s. In the best possible way.

The funny thing is, "Knots Landing" looks like it means something. It's easy to understand that Dallas, Flamingo Road and Peyton Place are places, but there are two different meanings of the word "landing" (and most non-English viewers wouldn't even know what the second meaning is).
Falcon Crest was so obviously the name of the company and the estate so I guess it didn't matter what it meant.
Oooh...Ouest! Of course. All this time I thought it was Cote Quest, maybe because the song sounds like one of those space-y action hero themes (e.g. Capitaine Flam)

I love how easily they edited the S10 opening to include the Quebecois title. The writing style was close enough to Sandy Dvore's to not be an obvious change.

    Good point. Something I overlooked.
Yes, you're right. I didn't mean that it literally wouldn't mean anything, just that it was fictitious name with no pre-existing baggage.

That´s right. They changed it in the "last minute" because another TV-station over here bought "California Clan" (OT Santa Barbara) - and they were afraid the audiences mixed KL and SB up with a similar title. But "California" was meant to be the European title for KL.
