Broadcaster and comedian Jim Bowen, best known for hosting darts-based game show Bullseye in the 1980s and '90s, has died at the age of 80.

His wife Phyllis confirmed the news to BBC Radio Lancashire.

The former deputy headmaster, who lived in North Lancashire, began his career as a stand-up comedian on the club circuit in the 1960s.

He became a household name when he began presenting Bullseye in 1981. The Sunday tea time show ran for 14 years.

This isn't super, smashing, great news, in fact it's really sad. I used to watch Bullseye often in the 1980s.

    Sad news

I used to love my fix of a bit of "bully" on Sundays back in the day.

Jim Bowen was a true legend, very poignant too now, I read earlier that Ken Dodd was his personal hero.

Bullseye was essential viewing in the day, Jim Bowen had such a great rapport with contestants and darts players alike. All the darts players thought the world of him too.

My Dad loved Bullseye, but even as a child of primary school age in the Eighties, I'm afraid I found Bowen's banter - particularly his patronising attitude towards female contestants - a little shocking.

"I must say you look absolutely delicious. You write poems and ditties. Have you ever shown your boyfriend your ditties? No? You just keep them close to your chest."
"You're a secretary to a builder? So the builder puts things up and you take things down."

    "You're obviously not English."
