It all served to neuter him. There was no sexuality from him because he seemed so childlike. That's more the "ick factor" than the actual age difference. I felt the same way about JR and Cally. She was not only young enough to be his granddaughter, she had this naivete of a child.
Over on Knots, the pairing of Greg and Paige was different because Paige acted as a mature, confident woman. She was sexual and she was in charge of her sexuality. She held her own against Greg , and wasn't going to be railroaded by him.(Rereading that last sentence I feel a dirty joke coming on. Nah, too easy:shifty:)

What about Dandy Dandridge? Or Uncle Jesse’s character on Dallas? Those were cringeworthy.

Dandy Dandridge was irritating though nowhere near as bad as James Beaumont, Leslie Stewart, Vanessa Beaumont, Rose McKay et al.

Blackie Callahan was OK, at least Denver Pyle was a good actor.

    Dandridge wasn't a character I would
want around too long, but I really liked how he el8cited an epiphany in Cliff sbout Digger abd the Barnes-Ewing fued. This led to an exquisite scene between Cliff and Miss Ellie, a highlight of the post Pam years.

April was the last of the regular characters I actually liked. Probably because I didn't care if Bobby and Pam ended up together. I liked Jenna too. lol

I didn't hate James and Leslie Stewart as much as I should have. I did hate Vanessa and Rose with the fiery hot passion of a thousand suns.

In 1989 who knows, other than nostalgia. Back in the day when they first met though she was pretty and polished (assuming the characters looked like the actors outside of their time on the show).

I still can't believe she once auditioned to be a Bond girl, the part of Solitaire in Live and Let Die.

Wasn't that the whole point? I don't mean this as a critique of your observation but you have nailed it regarding the "awkwardness" between Sue Ellen and Peter. If the story was created to make the audience feel uncomfortable then I believe the producers achieved their result.

I would be curious to know if that's what their goal was. if it is indeed what they wanted, that adds a new perspective
    to it.

Many here on Soapchat have argued Christopher Atkins role was "stunt casting." Others have suggested a different actor might have allowed the viewer to believe the story. Many were both dismayed and pleased how much flesh Christopher Atkins displayed.

My thought is Dallas (once again) was ahead of its time in telling a story between an older woman and younger man. Kudos to Dallas for throwing caution to the wind. It may have alienated many back in the day but recent reviews of Dallas has me liking the story and Christopher's portrayal of Peter.

Peter Richards for me - he was such a wet fish of a character and I still don't buy that Sue Ellen would ever have been interested in such an insipid human being - he was dull, boring, uninteresting with the personality of a wet mop.

Much like the scenes with Afton singing....I fast forward when he appears.
