I just heard on the news that French singer and composer Michel Legrand has died. Probably best known to international audiences as the writer of the Oscar winning song Windmills of Your Mind but he was also a great singer and recorded the song in French. The emotion and drama he brings to the song is second to none.

He also wrote the songs for one of the best film musicals ever, Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg).

He was nominated for 13 Oscars and won 3, including for composing the score for the 1983 film Yentl.

Legrand died today in Paris at the age of 86. He remained active until his death and had concerts scheduled to take place in the spring.

A wonderful composer. I was listening to Tina Arena's cover of Windmills Of Your Mind earlier today.

Another of his compositions I enjoy...

I never really liked the film Yentl, mainly because I never for one second thought Barbra Streisand could convincingly pass for being a man. However, the music and songs from the film were first class.

Michel Legrand was a musical genius. This is probably my favourite song of his, I Will Wait For You written for the musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.
