Take aside the fact that Gary was on KNOTS and wasn't really capable of running Ewing Oil, lets just say he was but wasn't prepared to go the lengths JR and Bobby would go, would Miss Ellie have broken Jock's will had her favourite son been in the running to gain Ewing Oil?

Would she have supported Gary to the bitter end? Undermining JR and Bobby?

If anything, Miss Ellie would have been even more determined to break Jock's will if Gary had been in the contest for Ewing Oil. That's because she would have known that Gary would have been completely out of his league competing against JR and Bobby. Gary would have ended up destroyed had he tried to fight JR for control of Ewing Oil and seeing Gary destroyed is the last thing Ellie would have wanted!

Gary wouldn't have wanted any part of the Battle for Ewing Oil, even though this was a slighter tougher Gary by Season 6 DVD Dallas and Season 4 Knots Landing, as he was now with Abby. Gary still wasn't as tough as he would become in future years yet, and he would also see the trouble ahead in the Battle for Ewing Oil, like his mother did and like Pam did. In J.R.'s mind (and even in Bobby's mind to a lesser extent), this would be another example of Gary running away and would confirm again how weak Gary really is, even if he has toughened up a bit with Abby's help. I think Gary was getting wiser and wiser, personally.

The idea of Gary standing and fighting J.R. and Bobby for control of Ewing Oil is absurd and out of character. Gary would run away and wouldn't be interested in it, nor in waiting around to be hurt by the trouble ahead. He'd much rather get back to work/business in California with Abby and having heart-to-hearts with Val when she'd listen to him.

Isn't Gary smarter for not getting involved? I'd say so. J.R. and Bobby's Battle for Ewing Oil had disastrous consequences, including for J.R. and Bobby. J.R. lost out when Rebecca died and Cliff came into money, and when he briefly ended up in a Cuban jail. Bobby's marriage to Pam was badly damaged, even though it was Katherine that later finished it off. Of course, things like Rebecca's death and Mickey's paralysis and death were much worse. From a moral standpoint, Miss Ellie and Pam were correct in their attempt to break Jock's will and in foreseeing the trouble ahead. From a drama standpoint, it would have been a lot less interesting had that happened.
