When Richard Channing joined the Tuscany Valley in the autumn of 1982 the actor chosen for the part was David Selby (previously DARK SHADOWS and FLAMINGO ROAD). David gave the long lost Channing son multi layers, to some he was charming but to others he was sinister and uncouth. Had he not been cast in the role at least two other well known ‘primetimers’ were also considered.

John Beck who also starred in FLAMINGO ROAD (as Sam Curtis) and then DALLAS (as Mark Graison) could’ve played Angela’s nemesis. Michael Nader who became famous as Dex, a husband of Alexis in DYNASTY was another alternative. So what about either of these two actors as Richard Channing?

The Gioberti castle mansion is about to vanish, into Falcon Crest history. Prior to this Richard does what he never thought he would have to do, rescue Angela from the rubble, (a scene from season 7, 1987-’88):

Sheriff: “The ambulance is on the way!”

Richard picks Angela up, from the debris as she utters, “Oh lord! I’ve died and gone to hell!”

    Richard: “She’s fine!”

Angela is carted away to the ambulance. Richard is standing outside with Maggie. Fred Wilkinson appears.

Richard: “What are you doing here Wilkinson?”

Fred: “Well it’s not every day a house blows up in my valley. This is the second time for you Channing. You think it might be blamed on your explosive reputation?”

Richard: “Why don’t you save your comedy routine for the gas inspector? He’s inside.”

Fred: “Looking for what, gas leaks? He won’t find any. When a house blows up with both Angela and Richard Channing inside it can’t be blamed on excess gas.”

Maggie: “Mr. Wilkinson my house is in pieces. I’m not in the mood for jokes.”

    The alleged gas inspector appears.

Fred: “Here. Here. I’m Wilkinson from the D.A’s office. What did ya find, any evidence of anything?”

Alleged gas inspector: “Gas leak. No question. This pipe is part of the main line.”

Fred: “I’ll hang onto that, if you don’t mind.”

The alleged gas inspector gives a very brief description, regarding the pipe failure.

Richard glances at Fred: “There goes that Dick Tracey merit badge.”

Hmm, not my favourite choices for the part of Richard, but I'd choose John Beck because I've never seen him playing a villain.

I don't think either are right for the role. Definitely not Michael Nader. If I had to choose one I'd say John Beck, but it's hard to imagine him playing a troubled soul with a very nasty streak. He always seemed so lovely.

He was sort of "ruthless" in Flamingo's first season, but even then still likeable and cuddly.

But it's interesting that both David Selby and Susan Sullivan reprised their roles from previous series (FL and Rich Man Poor Man).
I'm not familiar with Jane Wyman's other roles, but I assume she usually played the American Sweetheart? (I've only seen the movie with Rock Hudson).

David Selby had such a great chemistry with the rest of the cast and as Jock Og said, Richard Channing was a very complex and nuanced character.
You just never knew what to expect!

Still lovely, and she's quite annoying and had it coming. Thank heavens it's only a movie!

I can see either of those actors playing Richard Channing although John Beck was a far better actor than Michael Nadar in my opinion.

I think when an actor takes on a role they need to put their own stamp and interpretation on it to make it real, so although I couldn't see anyone else playing Richard in the way that David Selby did, I can see someone else doing it in a totally original way. I think John Beck might have emphasised Richard's need to be loved and accepted by his family more and maybe made him a more sympathetic character which I think would have been an interpretation that would have worked well.

I´m finishing the whole Melrose Place right now, and this guy appeared in the first episode of the sixth season: Jeffrey Nordling playing a tycoon whose headquarter is in New York, and is seemingly obsessed with Amanda, who used to work with him and now is

    .

In his very first scene, he changes his mood from extrakind to mega-angry (is this a word?) when she leaves. This introduction made me think of the early Richard Channing and, well, as usual in MP, the character just served to remake a well-known movie (in this case one about indecent proposals...), and then gone after 9 episodes, which is a record for a MP guest star. Actually, Mr. Nordling has made a career out of playing villanious guys (remember him as one of the many new-neighbors-of-the-season in "Desperate Housewives"? He was married to Drea de Matteo´s character), and baddie or not, I think he´s a really good actor, and quite handsome for his age.

Meet Eric Baines, not just another MP crazybat
I´m not saying that he could have played Richard (he started acting in 1988, so a bit too late), only that he had the same presence, ambivalent look and chamaleonic quality on MP that the early Richard.

That´s right Willie! It had something to do with bombing and a guy running over poor Jeffy, upon the Imdb. Does anyone else miss the DH? Do you?

Just as Angela Channing mentioned it is difficult to visualise someone else playing Richard. David Selby was one of my favourites in the show and he brought his own ideas for the role i.e. drinking milk and toy soldiers in the Newspaper office. Maybe John Beck would've been okay. Another interesting casting option might have been Alec Baldwin from Knots.

I learned something new today. I just had to google WITSEC, as I read it here and then again on Tommy's KL season 11 review and had no idea what it meant. Now I know. :)

Then there was Michael Swan from The Vintage Years, even though the role of Richard was slightly different in construction.
