As so many housemates appear to be absolutely useless when it comes to cooking, I will give anyone who is interested some basic cooking tuition so you don't end up eating mush after I'm evicted.

So far @Megan Rose has expressed an interest, so I will take her through the steps of how to cook dinner later today, anyone else interested is welcome to join us.

I will start with something straight forward: how to make a shepherd's pie using a recipe I picked up while I was doing a lecture tour in England back in the 1980s.

Thanks Charles I'm not a great cook, I normally grab a salad or fast food on the way home so I don't cook very often but I would love to learn.

Maybe you shouldn't scowl so much, when you pull that face it would turn milk sour so and probably make soup lumpy too. I can't help with cup-a-soup but I can show you how not to get lumps in your mash potatoes.

Right, let's start. Shepherd's pie is a great first meal to learn how to cook because it relatively simple and doesn't require any in depth cooking skills.

We need to start by peeling the potatoes, we can do one each. Using a potato peeler is so much easier than using a knife. If you've not done this before just watch me an copy.

That's great, now cut the peeled potatoes into chunks about quarter of it's original size or maybe eights if you have a really big one.

Rinse off the potatoes and place in a pot and cover with water. Salt the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer (just bubbling slightly) and we'll cook these for 15-20 minutes until the potato pieces are tender.

    You're doing great.

While the potatoes are cooking, we can start to make the pie filling. First we need to dice 2 small onions, that's just chopping them up but not too finely.

We also need to chop about 3 carrots and 3 cloves of garlic. Great, you're getting the hang of this.

Next we need to heat a bit of oil over medium-high heat in a large oven proof skillet for the Europeans in the group, that's a frying pan) . When the oil is hot, we add the diced onions and brown slightly, 2 minutes or so should be enough.

Now we add the garlic and carrots and cook until slightly tender, 2-3 minutes. That's looking good.

Next we need to add the ground beef (you Europeans call it beef mince) and cook with the onions, breaking it up into pieces. Come over here Miss Rose, you can do that.

    Great job Miss Rose.

Now it's nicely browned and cooked through, we're going to drain off the fat and add a stock cube, a quarter cup of of water, tomato puree and thyme. That's something you can do, Mr Shaw.

That's it, stir and cook over medium low heat.

Miss Barbie, can you get some frozen peas and corn from the freezer and add some to the skillet. Mix everything in well, Mr Shaw.

Miss Shannon, taste it please and add some salt and pepper according to how you like it. That's great, now Miss Shannon, transfer the contents of the skillet to this casserole dis and show it out evenly.

Excellent job, Miss Shannon, I couldn't have done it better myself.

That's just a scratch, rinse it under the tap and put a plaster on it and get back to the class.

Miss Barbie, the potatoes are cooked now, can you please drain the water out of the pot.

I'm going to add 3 cloves of roasted garlic and start mashing the potatoes.

Good to have you back Mr Shaw. Could you get some butter and cream cheese from the fridge so I can add some to the pot. I'm going to stir them in and add a little milk until it's the righ consistency. I like it stiff. A little salt and pepper and it's done.

Miss Barbie, top the meat with the mashed potatoes and I'm going to dot tiny cubes of butter on the top.

Mr Shaw, your hand seems OK with that band-aid on it, please put the pie in the oven. We will cook it for around half an hour until the top is crispy.

    That's it. Great job team!

    Any questions?
