Supposedly, back in the '70s and '80s, you can take the rating and multiply it by 1.5 ---- so if a show got a 20.4 rating, there were roughly 30 million people watching in America alone. (And, secretly, they say to double it).

Ask Joan Collins. Ratings were "everything" for her in Dynasty years  Beside, it is funny that Dynasty had much bigger audience than today´s most popular shows during season 8 and probably bigger in season 9 as well.

Yeah, and in the really old days, people left the phone off the hook when they watched Peyton Place and Coronation Street.
That is to say, those who had a telephone.

Event TV doesn't exist anymore unless it's the World Cup. And even that is no longer what it used to be, I believe.
On the upside, today's TV climate gives you the opportunity to discover many amazing and well-produced movies and TV series that nobody knows!

People also used to not answer the phone during family dinner. In the movie theatre. On a date. Or at a funeral. There are no events anymore--not just no event TV. No matter what someone is doing, they are always eager to signal that something is potentially more interesting/important/engaging than what they are currently involved in. What is happening with TV is very much tied to our whole way of life.

Which is perfectly normal when you're 15 and in love with some boy or girl and you want to know his or her every move. Of course that's more important than everything else.

And many people also need to share everything they're currently involved in. The only reason is: because it's possible.
That's the nature of progress, we can achieve it but we can't control it.

Back then when we only had 3 tv channels I had the feeling the shows that were on air were much better ... today we have over 30 channels and I find nothing I want to watch ... there are cop shows, cook shows, bad reality shows ...

back then I loved nearly every show from "Dynasty" to "Magnum", from "Hart to Hart" to "Flamingo Road", from "Cagney & Lacey" to "Alf"

when the 80´s were over less and less tv shows got my interest

It was also your only chance to watch that episode. No re-runs or re-watch on the internet, so you simply had to watch it.
Every now and then I recorded an episode (doesn't matter what series, I watched almost everything - but not Magnum) but only because I couldn't watch it "live", and not because I was going to watch something else instead.

I remember when Nielsen switched from the diaries to PeopleMeters for 1987-88, a lot of series fell significantly. Even “Cosby”, which was #1 during that season, had a significant decline from the previous season, when diaries were used to calculate the ratings.
