I don't know so much about old ( = cancelled before 2010) British series, and I would love to see more of them. So I would love to be recommended a number of series, from England in particular.

    • I am looking for series with a maximum of around 50 episodes. Nothing with over 100 episodes unless the series is THAT good.
    • Comedy or drama. Not horror, not science fiction, not fantasy and not melodramatic romance.
    • Doesn't matter how old the show is. Everything from the 60s to the 00s is fine.
    • England is my target, but Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or even Ireland is fine too.

Don't think too much about "what has she seen?" - just blurt out everything that comes to mind. :)

"Fawlty Towers" by John Cleese (of Monty Python) and his then-wife Connie Booth. They only made a dozen episodes but each one is brilliant.

"To Serve Them All My Days", a mini-series based on a novel by R.F. Delderfield about a shell-shocked WWI veteran who becomes a schoolteacher.

I can't remember what you've seen or not and I would throw in the trailers for these but I'm going to bed and you did say just blurt out what springs to mind.

When I think "British TV Drama", I can only think of one: "Upstairs, Downstairs". It´s 78 episodes, but it actually is THAT good. Especially before watching others like "Downton Abbey" (which essentially is a posh unofficial remake). Not too romantic but the characters are quite human AND IN character until the very end. Somewhat limited technically (most of it shot in interiors). Followed by an unfortunate, shorter spin-off with two of the characters that turned out to be very somber in tone ("Thomas & Sarah").

There is a brief sequel from the early 00´s but "Downton"´s opulence basically caused its cancelation. This sequel is also known as the series that launched wonderful Claire Joy to international stardom.

This one never grows old on me....

...and everytime Mrs Slocombe talks about the misfortunes of her kitty :fp: well it makes me laugh out loud.

And the constant references to Dallas is a charm.

This is the first series that came to mind for me, too.

I would also recommend Prime Suspect, which is a crime drama feat. Helen Mirren as its lead female detective. Luther feat. Idris Elba continues to be a hit, too.

A teen-drama Skins was really popular when it first aired and is also available on UK Netflix. A more adult (but, trashy) drama Footballers Wives was fun, too.

    The Office
is considered a comedy masterpiece but can feel dated, since so many shows have mimicked its format. Gavin & Stacey is a personal comedy favourite of mine, written and feat. James Corden before he was a hit in America. My Family is another comedy series that I used to love. Miranda is also very funny and Absolutely Fabulous is always a fun watch.

Fawlty Towers is almost impossible not to have heard of if you are over 30. I have probably seen all episodes 10 times or so. BASIL!!!

I will check out the titles that I have not heard of. Thanks for the recommendations, all of you. :ty:

The Forsyte Saga (original or remake)

To be honest I don't remember if I liked it or not, but there was something captivating about it. The original series was a big hit, apparently.

    2017 I think (unless it is 2016)
"Yes, Minister" and "Yes, Prime Minister"
While some of the references are terribly dated, the humour of the characters and how they interact with each other is not, and neither are the truths about the public and government/governed.
