The thought of trying to choose my 20 favourite songs of all time was just too daunting. I wouldn't know where to begin. Trying to pick one Madonna song, one Fleetwood Mac song, one Kate Bush song, just seemed overwhelming. So I decided to revisit some of my favourite songs by lesser known artists that I've nominated in the nominations threads over the years. The majority are songs that are part of my music collection but some are ones I discovered when searching for songs for the various themes. They're not in any particular order. Enjoy.

    Sonnet 29 – Rufus Wainright

World Spins Madly On – The Weepies

    :D

    1. Super Triangle – The Go! Team
It's so brilliantly naff, they used this style quite often in the late 70s and early 80s, for all sorts of (governmental) TV infomercials or something educational - in other words: time to switch to another channel (problem: there was no other channel). But now I love it, it's super-vintage.

    2. Sonnet 29 – Rufus Wainright
Because I don't listen to Shakespeare very often, so this was a very special experience.
And he's the son of Kate from Kate & Anna McGarrigle who had a smash-hit with the song "Complainte Pour Ste-Catherine".

    3. The Fear (Moonlight matters rework) - Ben Howard
A very beautiful and detailed mix, and the guitar is so hypnotizing.

    4. Falling From Grace – The Gentle Waves
"Small" in performance, grand in quality.

    5. You Know me better - Roisin Murphy

    6. Roscoe – Midlake

I couldn't help but thinking of Fleetwood Mac (You Make Loving Fun, perhaps?)

    7. Fresh Feeling - Eels
Because I had almost voted for it in the Chosen Word Top 10, and I didn't want to pass it up a second time.

    8. Life Of The Bird – Cinematic Orchestra
Cinematic indeed, but it also sounds very healing, almost as if it couldn't have been made by humans.

    9. Johnny and Mary - Kisses
Nice coverversion, I thought the song was "Kisses"!

    10. Tomorrow – Niki And The Dove

    C&P summary for Omery:
    1. Super Triangle – The Go! Team
    2. Sonnet 29 – Rufus Wainright
    3. The Fear (Moonlight matters rework) - Ben Howard
    4. Falling From Grace – The Gentle Waves
    5. You Know me better - Roisin Murphy
    6. Roscoe – Midlake
    7. Fresh Feeling - Eels
    8. Life Of The Bird – Cinematic Orchestra
    9. Johnny and Mary - Kisses
    10. Tomorrow – Niki And The Dove

Lovely choices, RC. Some of them very beautiful indeed. I didn't recognise any of the titles and the only one I recognised by sound was Heartbeats. So this has been a week of new discoveries for me. Thanks!!

    1. Life Of The Bird - Cinematic Orchestra
Oh wow. I listened to your songs according to the order in which you posted them. By the time I got to this track - the seventeenth - I was certain that nothing would topple Eels from the top spot. I’m very glad I was wrong, because this gorgeous track took me completely by surprise.

    2. Fresh Feeling - Eels
The lyrics are so evocative and poetic. Hopeful, simple and tangible. Just beautiful.

    3. Super Triangle - The Go! Team
This is gorgeously nostalgic. The video and the sound remind me very much of something that would have appeared in the middle of an episode of Tony Hart’s series when I was young.

    4. Blindfold - Morcheeba
Skye Edwards has a lovely voice and I enjoy the retro sound of this one. Love those strings.

    5. You Know Me Better - Róisín Murphy
Another with a nice throwback sound. The bassline of this one reminds me of Adamski’s Killer.

    6. Heartbeats - José González
More beautiful poetry that just feels nice and simple.

    7. All Your Gold - Bat For Lashes
This one surprised me. From the singer’s voice in the first verse I was expecting her to go into a full-on belt during the chorus, instead of the really sweet head voice she used.

    8. Secret Heart - Feist
This has a very jaunty sound, and I find myself fascinated by the angelic chorus of “oooooh”s in the background.

    9. Roscoe - Midlake
I enjoyed the mellow Moogy sound of this one.

    10. The Fear [Moonlight Matters Rework] - Ben Howard
The vibrant electronic arrangement reminds me of something that might have appeared on the Thank God It’s Friday soundtrack or something. But the vocal is very contemporary, which is a nice combination.

    4.
Life Of The Bird – Cinematic Orchestra

    8. Tomorrow – Niki And The Dove

This has been challenging mainly because I’m only familiar with one song and after listening to them all, I struggled to create a top ten, so many songs and not enough spaces to fit them in.

    1. The First Time I Ran Away – M. Ward
    2. World Spins Madly On – The Weepies
    3. Midlake – Roscoe
    4. You Know me better - Roisin Murphy

Before we get the final tally I would just like to thank everyone who has voted and especially those who took the time to say something about some songs. I enjoyed reading your take on some of my favourite songs. I hope people enjoyed the music and discovered something new that they like. It has been a pleasure to share these songs with you all.

I like that too. I am in awe over everyone that can describe a song so differently from a similar song. I can't do it. I'd end up saying "I loved the sound, it was a song with a beginning, a middle and an end".

I recognized some titles from previous nomination threads (this was already stated in the OP) and I think I've voted for those songs for the same reasons.

I am really pleased that 'World Spins Madly On' came out on top. It's probably my favourite song on the list but also it's the one that means the most to me. I fell in love with it when I first came across Ryan Woodward's beautiful animation 'Thought Of You' some years ago. Then recently I spent a long time in hospital and the words took on a whole new meaning for me, in fact, it kind of became my anthem for that whole time. It still brings a tear to my eye when I hear it.

'World Spins Madly On' lead me to seek out more of the Weepies music and I ended up listening to them non stop for a while. They're a married couple and I love the story of how they came into each others orbit.

    From Wikipedia:

'In 2001, Talan and Tannen were individually active as singer-songwriters but mutual fans of each other's music; Tannen played Talan's album "constantly", even singing along in harmony, while Talan in turn was captivated by and had "formed a kind of a relationship" with Tannen's music. After eventually meeting at one of Tannen's shows at Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they quickly discovered a deep musical bond and began playing music together.'

I love both of their voices and when they sing together and harmonize on tracks it's kind of magical. 'World Spins Madly On' is a perfect example of this.

While we're on the subject this is an interesting video on the creative process behind 'Thought Of You' by Ryan Woodward. The animation is as beautiful and melancholy as the song itself.

Thanks again to everyone who voted.

That is a very unusual story, like, something that could only happen in a movie!
