Robin Strasser is joining Days as a recast Vivian Alamain. Vivian's son Nicholas has also been recast with GH's Brandon Barash.

I've quit watching Days and switched to Y&R for the time being--mainly because almost nothing on Days is working for me at the moment. I'm curious enough about Robin's take on the character to tune back in for a bit. I don't care for the character of Nicholas, but I liked Barash on GH so it will be interesting to see if he makes me like the character any better.

BB is currently playing Stefan in a short-term recast, last I heard.:confuse: I guess Days's production model will give viewers a chance to 'forget' his Stefan before he starts as Nicholas, but it's still kind of odd the way they keep throwing new/old actors around. Yes, the audience is sophisticated enough to accept recasts, but they're pushing their luck when the recasts are all 'name' actors we recognize. A recast is typically easier when they hire some unknown that we have no preconceived notions about. It could possibly become a situation where people watch for the actors rather than for the characters or the stories they're in...which is what Santa Barbara seemed to become in its final years.

The news of Strasser being hired was out there but no one said she was (another) Vivian until now...but I kind of assumed she'd be a recast of a known character rather than a new character. RonC seems more keen to revive past characters rather than create new ones.

Too many recasts on the show and with the horrific one of Diana, RC needs to stop. That being said, TC is a big drunk in reality and that is what has gotten him fired on all of the jobs. RS has made it clear that she is not on contract at NBC, either. I hope she is not Vivian #04 of #04 (Louise Sorel, Marj Dusay, Louise Sorel, and RS, if she is Vivian).

I must say, I did not enjoy robin strasser as Vivian. I couldn’t wait for her to go away. It was like Dorian lord was parading around as Vivian.

What was up with the hammy acting!?!???? It was awful! Strasser was never that bad as Dorian, even!

I'm tempted to think that the lack of rehearsal and a minimum of stage direction on the set may have impacted her performance. RS grew up in the age when there were one or two run-throughs (table reads, blocking, dress rehearsal) of scripts before the actual performance. All that work (taking the material and polishing the performance) has been basically cut out of the modern soaps' production. There is no rehearsal--it's all done in the style of a cold-read in some cases. There also used to be strong directors who would re-direct actors in the midst of taping if they were departing too much from the script. Directors aren't as controlling these days. RS's penchant for scenery-chewing may have been kept under control by directors in the past, but that didn't occur at Days because the directors and producers are more centered around keeping the schedule (no reshoots!) than correcting an over-the-top performance.

It was also said during Ron C's tenure at both OLTL and especially GH that he added stage directions and inflections into the scripts, undercutting what the directors and actors thought they should do with the material. If he is doing similar things with the DOOL scripts, then the directors have even less control over what ends up onscreen. He wrote some of her more flamboyant work as Dorian on OLTL, so he may very well have wanted her to ham it up (to attract fans of such acting who loved Dorian's antics) and instructed her via the scripts to do it that way.

I never really watched OLTL but did when the online revival started, apparently she perceived Vivian as over the top I guess because of her actions. Which is true, but Vivian never behaved over the top. Next time Vivian comes they better do whatever they need to to get Louise back.

Great info Daniel, thank you! I don’t know much about RS other than Dorian and original Rachel. The latter I have never seen but would be curious to. I also didn’t know soaps did table reads and rehearsals, I thought there was never time for either.

So, RC likes things his way is what I take from this. He was the writer but fancied himself director and EP.

Dorian never acted liked a clown like RS did as Vivian. It was dreadful.
