SoapChat Standards is a twist on Ome's Top Ten threads (in other words, I've blatantly pinched Ome's idea).

Every few days we choose a song and then list our favourite versions by artist (up to ten). Then I add up the totals to find our collective favourites.

Here are the songs we've done so far:

    • Ain't No Mountain High Enough
    • All Along The Watchtower
    • Bohemian Rhapsody
    • Cry Me A River
    • Don't Cry For Me Argentina
    • Fever
    • Hallelujah
    • The House Of The Rising Sun
    • I Put A Spell On You
    • I Started A Joke
    • I'll Stand By You
    • Imagine
    • L’Amour Est Blue/Love Is Blue
    • Light My Fire
    • The Look Of Love
    • Respect
    • Summertime (And The Livin' Is Easy)
    • Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
    • Tainted Love
    • True Colors
    • The Way You Look Tonight
    • When I Fall In Love
    • Yesterday

    There's also a
separate suggestion thread which will help us keep better track of the songs we've covered and those still to come.

Picking up where we left off with…
"(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman"

"(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" is a 1967 single released by Aretha Franklin. The song was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin with input from Atlantic producer Jerry Wexler.

Versions have also been performed and recorded by Peggy Lipton (1968); Freddie Hughes (1968 - as "A Natural Man"); George Benson (1968); King herself (1971); Mary J. Blige (1995); Celine Dion (1995) and Christine Anu (2012).

You can explore 110 different versions here. Check out some videos, rummage through your iTunes collections and list your favourite versions below.

NEW RULE: Single song entries won't be counted. Please l
ist up to ten versions with a minimum of two choices (feel free to list more than ten, but be aware that only the first ten will be counted).

We'll come back to find out our ultimate version on Tuesday.

Can you hold out for a few extra days?

I don't want to miss out on this one and the weekend will give me a better chance to get my choice in.

This is such a frustrating song. I love the verse parts but I hate the sound of the chorus.

The results are finally here for (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.

Three people voted, yielding twenty versions of this karaoke classic.

Stats freaks may like to know that twenty is the third lowest number of versions chosen after All Along The Watchtower (19) and I'll Stand By You (13).
Our #1 artists got the second lowest top score in Standards history, only bettering I'll Stand By You (for which The Pretenders got only 15 points).

For a round that's taken almost two weeks and spanned two different incarnations of SoapChat, it seems quite appropriate that we also have TWO WINNERS. How exciting!!

And so, with no further ado, here are those all-important results…

    [IMG][IMG]

    1. Aretha Franklin / Tina Charles - 18
    2. Bonnie Tyler - 17
    3. Adele / Celine Dion - 12
    4. Carole King - 11
    5. Rod Stewart / Susan Wong / Whitney Houston - 9
    6. Marcia Hines - 8
    7. Jody Miller - 7
    8. Bobbie Womack / Los Blues - 6
    9. The Smalls - 4
    10. Amanda Brown / Christina Bianco / Gloria, Aretha, Celine, Shania, Mariah & Carole / Lyn Roman - 3
    11. The Brockingtons - 2
    12. Clodagh Rodgers - 1

Thanks to @SueEllenRules! for suggesting this song. It's been great fun!!

    Next up…
    Downtown

Suggested by @Ome, "Downtown" is a pop song composed by Tony Hatch which, as recorded by Petula Clark in 1964, became an international hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 in UK Singles Chart. Hatch received the 1981 Ivor Novello award for 'Best Song Musically and Lyrically'.

In the autumn of 1964 Hatch had made his first visit to New York City: "I was staying at a hotel on Central Park and I wandered down to Broadway and to Times Square and naively I thought I was downtown, forgetting that in New York especially, downtown is a lot further... getting on towards Battery Park." According to Hatch he was standing on the corner of 48th St waiting for the traffic lights to change, looking towards Times Square when "the melody first came to me, just as the neon signs went on."

The song has been covered by many singers, including Dolly Parton and Emma Bunton and the Saw Doctors.

If you'd like to explore some of the many recordings, 90 versions are listed on SecondHand Songs. Check them out and post your favourites below.

Single song entries won't be counted. Please list up to ten versions with a minimum of two choices (feel free to list more than ten, but be aware that only the first ten will be counted).

We'll come back on Sunday to discover SoapChat's favourite version.

Hey Mel, is it OK to list different versions by the same artist?

Absolutely, Willie. Having an artist competing with themselves makes it even more spicy. ;)
