    Blue Monday

A week late. But quite frankly this Monday isn't any more cheerful, is it?

A suggestion from @Long Lashes, "Blue Monday" was written by members of British rock band New Order whose original version was released in March 1983.

Widely regarded as a crucial link between Seventies disco and the dance/house boom that took off at the end of the Eighties, "Blue Monday" was influenced by three songs: the arrangement came from "Dirty Talk" by Klein + M.B.O.; the beat came from Donna Summer's "Our Love"; the choir sound was sampled from the Kraftwerk song "Uranium".

The single's unique packaging featured a die-cut sleeve designed to resemble a 5¼" floppy disc. The front cover featured no words, but instead had code in the form of coloured blocks that, once deciphered, read out the artist, song, and label information.

The original single had a positive commercial performance, peaking within the top ten in many countries. It currently stands as the best-selling 12" single of all time.

It has been remixed by the band twice, in 1988 and 1995. The 1988 remix went on to reach number one in New Zealand and peak in the top-ten in numerous countries as well.

In 1998, "Blue Monday" was covered by American alternative metal band Orgy. Their version was a hit, appearing on music charts worldwide. It has been attributed with providing industrial and metal music with a fresh connection.

Flunk covered the song and released it as single in 2002. This slowed down version emphasised the lyrics. The single received generally positive reviews by electronic music critics.

In 2004, Aphex Twin's Rephlex Records released 808 State's acid house version of Blue Monday which had been recorded in 1988. A favourite at The Haçienda's Hot Night, the recording was believed lost until Autechre's Sean Booth asked Graham Massey to dig through his archive of old 808 State acid house material.

Blue Monday has been covered many times. You can find over forty versions here. Explore, enjoy and enter your favourites below.

Please list up to ten versions with a minimum of three choices. Let's say we'll bring voting to a close on Friday night, but if you'd like more time just ask.

    Dear Prudence

Suggested by @Ome, "Dear Prudence" is a song written by John Lennon and credited to Lennon-McCartney. First recorded by Lennon's group, The Beatles, it appeared on their eponymous 1968 album (also known as "the White Album").

The song was Written in India, inspired by Prudence Farrow, sister of actress Mia Farrow who was present in India when who was present when The Beatles studied with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Farrow became so serious about her meditation that she "turned into a near recluse" and "rarely came out" of the cottage she was living in. In the song, Lennon asks Farrow to "open up your eyes" and "see the sunny skies", reminding her that she is "part of everything". Lennon played the song for Farrow in India, and she has said how flattering she found it.

The Beatles recorded their version at Trident Studios, London on 28-30 August 1968. The basic track included finger picking guitar performed by Lennon as well as Harrison on lead guitar, plus McCartney playing the drums in place of Ringo Starr who had temporarily left The Beatles. Handclapping, cowbell and tambourine were then added by Harrison and McCartney.

The song was first played on the radio in November and December of that year.

British post-punk band Siouxsie and the Banshees released a cover version of the song as a single in 1983. Peaking at #3 in the UK Singles Chart, it became their biggest British hit.

Other versions include: Ramsey Lewis (1968); Kenny Rankin (1970); Jerry Garcia (1991); The Clarks (1991); Jeff Lorber (1998); and Casey Mecija (2010).

Over sixty versions may be found here. Explore, enjoy and then list your favourites in this thread. Please list up to ten versions with a minimum of three choices.

We'll bring voting to a close on Thursday night after which our favourite version will be revealed.
