Would there have been room for Richard in season#1, with the main story of Angela and Chase about Jason / the history? I would have enjoyed seeing Richard interact with Douglas and also have more scenes with Jacqueline.

    No.

Having watched the Vintage Years pilot, Richard would've been out of place and too envious of Lance.

His arrival in season 2 is perfect timing wise because he is the lone wolf outsider initially, hovering in the dark waiting to pounce.

I cannot see him in season one. Because there wasn't enough room for him at the moment in time.

I also don’t feel it was necessary to have him in the first season. Having him around when the Jason Gioberti mystery was going on would have unduly complicated matters. With the show becoming serialized in season 2 Richard helped a great deal, as popularity increased.

Jacqueline Perrault; fur coat and all, arrives into Richard’s ‘New Globe’ office. Richard and Chase have been bickering about business. She then drops a bombshell, (a scene from season 2, 1982-’83):

    Jacqueline: “I’ve heard enough.”

She hands Richard a bit of paper.

    Jacqueline: “Here!”

    Richard: “What’s this?”

Jacqueline: “It’s your birth certificate. I’m your mother. You are both my sons!!!”

The frame freezes on Richard and Chase, as they look towards Jacqueline. Fade to black. The credits appear and the closing theme tune commences.

Like Alexis on DYNASTY, Richard Channing's arrival was much more effective having been delayed to the start of the second season.

Imagine a Falcon Crest prequel series, like Bates Motel and Gotham. A young Richard, growing up with the Cartel.
    5 seasons, at least!

The show needed to get established before Richard arrived and I think this was achieved quite nicely.
