    I dunno
Seriously how often do we see characters in the early seasons playing with some sort of product by them? I guess it was influenced by the kids on the block inevitably being into video games but it's sort of funny. Atari (or Atari-like games) are featured regularly in the early seasons.

Did Knots ever get some $$$ for these sort of product placements? Or did they do it for the goodness of their heart (and make Abby hate them)?

Anyone else have blatant product placements?

The only one I know of for sure is that Ford Motor Company had a contract to provide the majority of the vehicles for KL (in later years). Plenty of characters were seen with non-Fords in the early years, though, and there were a few characters (Paige, for instance) who drove something other than a Ford in the last few seasons...so this wasn't comprehensive. It would have been messy if Knots Landing Motors had been a dealership that sold any type of cars exclusively, since TV shows don't want to be seen "endorsing" one potential sponsor over any other.

I doubt Atari paid for the product placement, since it was a lot more common prior to the mid-1980s for regular products/brands to appear in TV series without any controversy. I think it was the mid-1980s when people started getting really uptight about that kind of thing, when shows had to start obscuring product labels or creating "fake" versions of products. Atari sets were so popular at that time (I had one!) that it might have been above "product placement" in that sense. It might have been as natural as having a laptop computer on a set today.

I do recall that in later seasons the products in Karen's kitchen had been "doctored" so that the Sun Light dishwashing liquid container on her sink said Sli Licht courtesy of some strategically-placed tape. I also recall someone (Mack, I think) was sitting on a park bench near a USA Today newspaper box and some location assistant had put the same white tape directly through/over the name of the paper, even though USA Today was/is so recognizable for its unique layout that the tape only drew attention to the un-naturalness of the image.

Today Knots would be all about monetization via product placements - especially considering how often they were just cooking in the kitchen...

Speaking of which - what was in Karen's tuna salad anyway?

I do know that Val's mullet was sponsored by Stiff Stuff. As was Gary's shorts.

It was just a tangent of mine. I'm guessing NBC just doesn't want to share its toys. This article basically explains the skit, though at this point I guess we can group it under "you just had to be there." Then again, it was 1975, so I was probably the only one in soapchat who actually was there.
