I didn't know that Spotify also did the "follow" thing.
I find it so dated, I mean even here on soapchat we stopped adding members to our Friends List (because it doesn't really serve any purpose)

On Spotify, it has a purpose. You get e-mails when one artist you follow has a new release. You can also get an e-mail when an artist you follow has a concert in your area in the near future.

Can I ask what is the difference between Spotify and Itunes? I am seeing how much music I am missing out on not having either one.

I don't know much about iTunes or Apple (whatever they call themselves) as a streaming site. My only knowledge of iTunes is that it's a place to buy digital music, whereas Spotify we don't actually buy the music, we just use it, listen to it, create playlists. Then there is the added bonus where Spotify notifies you if there is some new music from your favourite artists. They also release a playlist filled with music that is released every Friday.

I was very reluctant at first because I enjoyed owning the music. Then I started to realise that I spent far too much on music and most of the times I found I wasn't listening to same albums every year, so if effect I was kinda hoarding but in a digital way. I have loved the chance to listen to so many more artists and then get to pick and choose what I would actually buy to keep forever, so far this year I have bought 4 albums (Madonna, Sam Fender, YUNGBLUD & Alex Cameron), something that I could easily have done every month. I've also had the opportunity to listen to many new mixes of my favourite songs without having to buy and download from iTunes.

Then there is the all-important fascination with what I listen to through Spotify's 'All Wrapped Up' which comes out every December and gives you an incredible audit into your music. It will list

    • The song you played the most through each season
    • The top ten songs you listened to that year
    • The list of different countries the artists you listen to each year
    • Your top five artists that yar
    • A break down of the different genres you've listened to that year
    • How many new artists you listened to (in my case it was 666)
    • The artists you listened to by how many tracks and albums and how long in hours you listened to them
    • How many minutes you've listened to Spotify (in my case 40,383 minutes)

    666 :yikey:

Just hearing you say you found YUNGBLUD on there is enough for me to give it a go. I like how you get this every year and you can see everything you have done. I am also finding that I am listening to more and more music on my computer since I got the bose speakers. So I really wouldn't have to worry about creating a playlist for my phone.

3 things SC has done for me since my return.......it's getting me out of my music bubble that I got stuck in and it's making me want to see Knots Landing again and to watch Dynasty for the first time. :hny:

Thank you for posting all of this. I will be getting Spotify today. :12:

I have both Spotify and Apple Music but I mainly use Spotify. I originally went with Spotify over Apple Music because with Spotify you could download music and listen when wifi and cellular weren't available but now you can do that with Apple Music too. The benefit of Apple Music is that besides having access to all of Apple's music library you also have access to your personal music collection, like all the remixes that I have purchased on CDs over the years that aren't available to stream. I've managed to share some of my personal library with my Spotify account but it doesn't always work for me.

For my Spotify 2019 Wrapped, Madonna knocked Steps out of the number one spot as my top artist. Steps was number one for the past two years. I imagine with a new album coming out in 202o, Steps will reclaim the top spot again next year.

I love the statistics Spotify provides each December. Apparently, I listened to 7961 different songs on Spotify in 2019.

And this year, the decade was summarized too. My #1 artist of the 2010s was Bo Kaspers Orkester.

    Top 5 for 2019:
    1. Bo Kaspers Orkester
    2. Weeping Willows
    3. Lana del Rey
    4. Lisa Ekdahl
    5. Katie Melua

    Top song of 2019:
The Longer the Waiting (the Sweeter the Kiss) by Anna Ternheim

    Top genre of 2019:
    Swedish pop

I discovered 347 new artist this past year and listened to artists from 44 different countries.

    Functions I love about Spotify:

    • How easy it is to create playlists and choose which ones you want to be public and which you prefer private.
    • Folders so you can place playlists that are similar in the same folder.
    • Spotify's ready made playlists especially for you, based on what you like or what you may like because you have listened to similar artists.
    • That you can copy others' playlists (those that are public).
    • That you can listen to podcasts as well as music. No need for a separate app.
    • That they suggest similar artists for every artist.
    • Their catalogue is enormous!
    • That they send you an e-mail when there is a new release of an artist that you follow.
    • The statistics you get.
    • That you can be more than one user on the same account.
    • That you can listen offline if you have clicked "download" on the songs. They get saved on your phone.
    • That they also do ready made playlists for every possible mood you may be in. Just search a word and click on playlists matching that word.
    • It's very easy to use.
I have Spotify Premium. I pay 99 SEK per month (£7.93) ($10.43). Get rid of commercials, get unlimited access etc.

This is a feature I have not explored at all and I need to as I have so many playlists. It seems like this might be a good project for this rainy Sunday afternoon.

This is probably my favorite Spotify feature.

I switched from the Apple podcast app and started listening to all my podcasts on Spotify this year. It's nice to have everything in one place. Now if I could just add my Audible account to Spotify everything I listen to would be in one place. :D

Are there any surprises in these lists for any of you? I've never paid much attention to Spotify because I've always used iTunes , but after reading all these statistics I am very interested.

I like the sound of this. I enjoy someone else selecting tracks that I might like to hear.

But is there really no other way to find out? Do we have to get emails and notifications for everything?
If they already suggest songs based on the songs you play, then why do you have to follow artists? What are the odds that they wouldn't suggest a new release by your most played artist?

Personally I prefer to search for stuff because it's always so satisfying when I find it (especially the good stuff that tries so hard to go unnoticed).

Nothing really surprised me much on my lists other than I didn't realize I listened to Borderline by Madonna that much.

Yes, there are always other ways to find out things, but if you're a member of Spotify, then most (if not all) the information you want is there in one place rather than looking on various websites.

You don't have to get anything, you can pick and choose what emails (if any) you receive)

To get updates on any new music of if they are touring near me.

If I like someone then I want to know when they release new music and more importantly when they release new remixes. The only other way I know how to get this is probably subscribing to their website and so if I want info of 40 artists, then that could potentially mean I have to subscribe to 40 websites, however with Spotify, it just one website and let's not forget, I have preferences, I don't have to have their emails.

Every artist on Spotify has a section called FANS ALSO LIKE where it lists other artists that people (who listen to that artist) listen to.

It's a lot of fun looking at that because that's where you discover some artists you might never ave met. It's also a great place for any music lover who doesn't have Soap Chat as a place to discover new music and artists.

This is part of what Spotify is all about. Searching, discovering and learning about new music.

On top of that, Spotify will list the top five cities that listen the most to any particular artists you are looking at.

I think it's great to have one huge platform to search for new music. You can be taken anywhere. I often go toone artist I like, then click on one of the "similar artists" options, and a similar artist to that one, a similar artist to that etc. Soon you have been taken from one genre to a complete other. You never know where you will end up. And you discover a lot of artists that are not very famous at all along the way.

I also love to be notified when one artist I follow has a concert near me in the near future. They notify you very fast upon the release of the date so you can buy your ticket before the news have spread all over. That's why I have gotten first row on many concerts. Those e-mails have made it possible. I have gotten so spoiled that if I don't get a seat anywhere between first row and forth row, then going to the concert isn't worth my money. :)

    Absolutely!

While I hear about The Killers (or other current bands I love) and when they tour, there was never a mention of when artists from my childhood would get that type of promotion. Through Spotify, I've learned that Toyah has been near me, Hazel O'Connor, Altered Images, Howard Jones and many many more that I would have missed.

There is so much more to Spotify other than listening to music and I only wished I had joined up much earlier.

Not everything is great with Spotify. Some artists haven't loaded up all their albums, not sure if this has anything to do with a copyright or silly stuff like that. Also, I can't upload my own personal remixes onto Spotify. I can listen to them on my computer, but not on any other device.

I wanted to add Sia's "Diamonds" acoustic version, but it's not on there. :re:
