I have mentioned on more than one occasion that I am extremely unfortunate to have the most awful boss at work imaginable, this week my patience finally ran out and I put in an official complaint about her. We aren't a big team - only three of us - but she speaks to us like absolute dirt, can't be remotely civil at all. Above all she maintains a "Do As I Say Not As I Do" attitude, which turns my stomach.

This year I have found that I have been remarkably patient but I have been treated like some kind of subhuman species and I am no longer prepared to put up with it.

I decided it is long overdue for me to get my retaliation in first.

My God! You're still working for her? Kudos....I would've left a long time ago.

She should be retired, but she is down to three days a week and ironically, is even worse than she was when she worked five days a week.

She's not a complete idiot - some parts are still missing.

She's at it again today, trying to find fault with us by way of a smokescreen to cover up for her considerable failings.

I am due to get word shortly as to whether or not I have been successful in my promotion interview, I sincerely hope so. If only to get away from her.

I was in a situation similar to yours several years ago. He would curse and shout and had a hair-trigger temper. His treatment of women was especially shocking: he either hit on them and made them uncomfortable, or he was dismissive and treated them like they were stupid. Soon after his behavior got out of hand, I started writing things down in two journals. I wanted to be able to recount to the general manager all of the unprofessional behavior, even cite witnesses, days and times. When someone insults you or slights you in some way, it will be fresh in your mind, but over time they all blend together, especially when there are multiple events. Such journals are often accepted in court cases as "testimony" or evidence when they are not opinionated or prejudicial.
Keeping the objective details in one journal helped make it all "businesslike". It did not read like some angry, hurt employee whining about mistreatment--it was just bullet-points of his unprofessional behaviors with no commentary. The whining and anger were in the other journal and I did not want anyone else to see that because it was too personal. Though that one was much more colorful.

The overall plan was to collect enough material on him in a "paper trail" when or if he tried to get me fired. I could march into such a meeting armed with a laundry list of things and cause a big stink on my way out. Alas, I never got to use it for anything, because he got himself fired first. Still, it was an empowering little book while I was working on it.

Yes, it is definitely useful to document notable incidents. On one occasion I went to a harassment officer and for a while she was a bit more civil. But the core of the problem is that she is so so hopeless at her job, myself and my two colleagues carry our unit yet she tries to take all the credit for everything we do. And after a while that does get a bit dispiriting.

You know the perfect parting gift for this turd? You should have had the journal (the bullet point form one) mounted in a frame (behind glass) and gift wrapped. Prior to him exiting the building you personally should have handed it to him with the best of wishes. If he had the fortitude to open it in front of you but couldn't understand the meaning, a polite, "I dare you to break the glass," would have been a perfect send off.

I would have preferred dropping a piano on his head, but I like your suggestion, too.

I was not lucky enough to be around when the hammer fell, but perhaps I was lucky in a way. He went on a tirade at an older (like 60-plus) woman in a neighboring department, calling her the c-word among other choice things in front of about half the employees on duty that day. This lady was a total sweetheart that everybody loved. I never did learn what set him off (does it matter?) but the manager did not even wait for HR to investigate. He was fired and escorted from the building. I heard he had the gall to attempt applying for unemployment, but the manager shut that down, too.

I'm glad I was not there because the woman involved was in tears and had to go home for the day. I could tolerate him being a jerk to me, but she did not deserve such treatment and I would have been stringing up the piano myself.

You're giving me ideas there if my boss decides to retire, because my colleagues and I have kept all her atrocious emails - with the worst spelling known to man. They're definitely worth putting up on a Powerpoint presentation at her leaving do. That would be the only reason I'd go, by the way - just to make sure she was definitely leaving.

How is this even possible? When I'm using Gmail it prompts me if I've spelt a word incorrectly. Better yet. I often use Word because it also offers grammar checks besides spelling errors. I then cut and paste the text into my email program. But I'm hearing you regarding poor grammar and spelling via emails. I've witnessed some from higher up the food chain in my place of work and some are laughable.

Honestly, I can't even describe to you how bad her spelling is. But even more than that it is so unprofessional. She once referred to a member of our staff whose surname is Donaghy - as Mr Dinghy!

What makes things even worse is she does most of her emailing from a work Blackberry and she can't figure out the keyboard on it at all. Some of the emails you really would think were in a foreign language.

Today was absolutely unbearable - she phoned my colleague and I at least a dozen times today to find out mobile numbers for members of staff - which are listed on our internal Outlook directory. And that apparently is beyond her. It is hardly rocket science, but that is just a typical example of the aggro we are dealing with.
