    Miss Piggy sweetly agrees!

I am having a hard time to pick these as I find it hard to define camp?:confuse:

On one level I find the scene where Bobby dies to be camp! :eck:
I think the reason for it is because of the context that I first watched it in. You see the first time I watched it was on an "after Dallas" show where some Swedish tv critics were commenting on how he had gotten a bit of a sore on the lips and in other words they were making fun of it!
Then moments later they showed the resolution of Pam waking up and finding Bobby in the shower. :gm:

So considering that was the first time I watched this scene I do find it to be camp even though it is not intended to be and is in fact played straight and I know other fans cried their eyes out the first time they watched this scene because they thought that Bobby really died!

Of course I knew all along that he didn't and this has affected my view/interpretation of the scene to the point where I have never cried watching it.

So what is your opinion, is this scene camp or not?

It is a hard thing to define but I think you're on the wrong track there Karin, because I don't think this scene is remotely camp. I don't think a scene this heart breaking and emotional could be considered camp, unless Joan Collins was in it and started whaling dramatically. In fact, when in doubt, pretty much anything with Joan Collins will do.

If you are still having a hard time grasping what camp really is maybe just compile a list with scenes others have nominated.

Hmmmm. As far as camp goes anyone who was British and on Dynasty usually did it pretty well. Joan Collins, Stephanie Beacham, Kate O'Mara, Christopher Cazenove all delivered perfect soap opera campness. I don't think Emma Samms really delivered but she's a different story. Diahann Carroll was also pretty camp, and seemed to know what she was doing. I don't think Linda Evans was, not really. Certainly not in her delivery, although her stories got progressively camper, like with Rita.

On Dallas, Katherine Wentworth was camp in a fabulous, yet natural way. Lady Jessica was camp. Sue Ellen could be camp at times, in an overly dramatic way. Anjelica Nero was camp, but in an obvious, lets copy Dynasty way. And intentional camp somehow evaporates that natural essence of camp. lol

Camp, is hard to define. I believe that it has to feel natural, not forced. Which is strange, as camp, seems to be understood as very arched or overly dramatic or attention grabbing. However, if these things seem to come naturally to the performer, performance or scene then that is camp.

    I hope that makes sense.

I think Francesca's tarantella dance is a great example of a definition of camp: it's over the top, ostentatious, flamboyant, often amusing and sometimes cheesy.

I would describe it more as being melodramatic than camp. Had Bobby woken up after he flatlined, sang a verse of Memories while Pam and Jenna bitched at each other over who loved Bobby more, that would have been camp.

Off the record, I think this should have been a Sable/Constance Top 5.
There was something very old-fashioned about The Colbys, and it created the perfect balance between Hi Drama and marvelous camp.

And I think that's what I've learned from this thread: good camp - besides not being intentional - is only one reflection of the scene.
I could watch all these scenes as something dramatic, thrilling or even spooky (Julia's nightmare won the Spooky Battle) and then the next day, watching those very same scenes, being (pleasantly) overwhelmed by its camp-factor.
The camp is inherent, but doesn't necessarily define the tone of the scene. And maybe that's what makes it a more personal experience?
