Or any kind of enterprise that was relevant to the story or characters.
What companies were the most interesting, characteristic, exciting, charming, evil etc etc.
And which prime time soap is going to win this SoapLand Battle trophy?

[heading off to write a Yelp! review for Oleson's Mercantile--1 out of 5 stars, unfortunately :mo:]

    1. Lotus Point Resort (Knots Landing). Very much a "California" thing, what with the lovely weather, manicured landscaping, and upscale clientele. It gave off a classy vibe but still had that whole "green before green became cool" Utopia thing going on thanks to Karen and Gary's input. The tainted reservoir, dead politicians and secret underground communication center only helped remind the visitor that they were in California, where environmental disasters, back-stabbing politics and Silicon Valley megalomaniacs are always nearby.

    2. Falcon Crest Winery (Falcon Crest). In the early seasons, the winery was virtually another character on the show. We saw characters working in the fields, the laboratories, the storage casks, etc. and of course tasting the fruits of their labors. It gave the show (and its characters) a lot more dimension than just rich folks fighting over off-screen companies and properties.

    3. Ewing Oil, Dallas. Everything seemed to revolve around the struggles over this company, even a few struggles over in Knots Landing.

    4. Daniel (KL). Every soap needs one hangout where all the characters go to have their "secret" conversations overheard, where characters who hate one another can get in each other's faces. This was KL's first major effort to have the characters interact in a social setting outside the cul-de-sac, where they could wear nice clothes.

    5. The Sumner Group (KL). Even more upscale than Lotus Point, but the downside was that no one actually knew what the Sumner Group did to make money. Extra points, however, for all the hanky-panky that occurred in those elevators.

Harsh! Or is it because we didn't accept your inferior eggs?

    1. Falcon Crest Winery - for the same reason as Daniel Avery
    2. Knots Landing Motors - so strange to see this after watching the shows with the big companies. But I instantly loved it.
    3. The Yellow Rose - huge, epic, dirt and cattle. And eventually, lots of oil too.
    4. The Colby Collection - Sable's tribute to her "perfect" world, and her perfect man.
    5. Empire Valley's outlandish hi-tech, security/espionage project aka "the people wanted to look inside the UFO"

Hm, yes, that no-star establishment that was supposed to be an Extravaganza De Luxe.
But Dynasty had some good ones too, like The Denver Mirror.
Just the very idea that Denver's catty oil tyconette - who used to be in the tabloids during her globetrotting & deepthroating days - would now serve Denver's community with unbiased and useful information, is downright hilarious.

It reminds me of an episode of Little House On The Prairie, when Harriet Oleson got her own newspaper - after all, she was the only artistic and educated person in town to do it.
Well, it didn't last very long.

I wonder how many Soap newspapers there were...Elmo Tyson had one, and Richard Channing of course - but the characters read other fake newspapers too (Sammy Jo, the one with the Dallas article, for example).
    Trivia, trivia.

The Dallas Press, the Denver Mirror, the Denver Chronicle, the Knots Landing Tribune, the one Mandy Winger was the publisher of in The Yellow Rose ...

Don't forget Knots Landing's Weekly World Secrets, the fish-wrap that trumpeted headlines about how Joshua Rush may have tried to murder his songbird wife, causing Lilimae to go on that mad-dash meltdown through the supermarket to snatch up all the copies (even grabbing one copy out of a woman's hand!). Probably the only time Julie Harris ever got her picture on the cover of a tabloid.

That might also have been the tab that featured that infamous headline, "Booze and Women Made My Life Hell: Ewing Ex Tells All In New Book".

It's all about the Denver Chronicle, but only when Amanda Carrington says it, and only when the first Amanda says it.

My choices are mostly to do with the look and feel of these business and their locations. As did any of us really care at all what people were doing there or how they were run?

    1. Denver Carrington - I liked how the office sets expanded and looked in general, even the first sets which were all white and chrome-y. They gave Adam an office and Steven and they had sofas in the waiting areas and they had double elevators and a filing room where Claudia could snoop for Cecil. I think Denver Carrington had the biggest floor space set-wise of any of the soap companies. And of course it had a boardroom! The secretaries were all wafting and official.

    2. Ewing Oil - It had clout and weight but more in the context of the characters and story. The sets of the offices usually were a bit hideous and I hated how there was just no logical link at all between how JR and Bobby's offices looked. They didn't even look like they were in the same building. It was like they had been decorated during an episode of Changing Rooms. And then there were Sly and Phyllis working for a multimillion dollar oil company and yet resembling the secretaries at the local primary school. You knew that they had to share the hole punch, tipex and stapler.

    3. Colby Co - It's supposed to be bigger than Denver Carrington I think, but then it's smaller than Colby Enterprises so what do I know? All I know is that Colby Co seemed to have the worst office sets out of the Dynasty Universe shows. Even Alexis who is a style queen of fabulousness couldn't do anything with her boring beige office. I guess she was too busy shagging all her hot buff secretaries. Maybe I should make this one number one.

    4. Lotus Point - I loved the early sets with that little bridge walk way and the offices around it, and all the greenery. It was supposed to be outdoorsy but it was indoorsy. Abby, Karen and Laura didn't even really need secretaries either they just woke up one day and decided to be business woman because it was the '80s and that's what women did in the '80s they put on big shouldered things and they ran the world. It didn't matter that Abby's previous experience was in fiddling the books for Knots Landing Motors and Karen's biggest qualification was being self righteous and loud and that Laura was an estate agent. They just ran a luxury health spa/resort/getaway in California and did a magnificent job of it while Gary sometimes came to meetings and admired their handy work. Success.

    5. The Carlton - I just liked the set. So there.

    1) Falcon Crest Winery

    1) South Fork Ranch (tie) - the home, the land, the business all in one, harking back to a time way before the giant corporations they'd manipulate.

    3) JRE Industries

    3) The Sumer Group (tie)

    3) Channing Enterprises (tie) - like Bill Gates after them, these Titians of business knew to diversify their money in a collection of business, where Jock and Angela just owned a bunch of stuff, they had private holding and investment companies before they were cool.

DisHonorable (but fun) mention: all of the dummy companies.

    Honorable Mention: Ewing Oil

But typical of that time, I think. And in terms of hideousness, it was really nothing compared to the depressing offices in the European series, often literally clouded with cigarette smoke:lol:
    Or vote for Colby Enterprises!
Incidentally, what was the name of Logan Rhinewood's company. Didn't Blake say "who are you, show me your face, dammit" or something like that? I thought it was bit like the Wizard of Oz. Not to mention Cecil's tiny but fabulous secret control room!
    Me too.

Was that the episode when she printed a lot a gossip and innuendo about people in Walnut Grove causing outrage? Harriet was such a great character, in fact almost every character in the show was well rounded and interesting.
