A macabre theme, I know, but the soaps couldn't do without these dramatic and sadistic thrills.
Therefore it's time to find out who pegged it the best.
Many scenes to choose from, so we could do 10 votes this time.

To clarify: this is about the actual death scenes, not characters who happened to die in the story.
And it's not necessarily about the reason/event that caused the character to die.
For example: Melissa Agretti didn't die in the fire, and Bobby Ewing didn't die on Pam's doorstep.
They both died in the hospital.

Needless to say, off-screen deaths do not count, but don't panic, there will be another voting round for best character exits (dead or alive).

    Enjoy! (sort of)

This is actually a little more challenging than first appears. Three that sprang to mind had to be ruled out as the reveal came from discovery of an already dead body, with the actual death having occurred offscreen.

It's not mandatory to list 10 scenes, however the number of votes will affect the points given to those very votes.
If you list 7 scenes, than your #1 is not 10 points, but 7.
I think that's the most logical way to calculate the votes.

But it really shouldn't be too challenging for Knots Landing fans;)

    You rang? :D

I like the topic, but I'd never thought about how many versions of death scenes there can be. I'll have to run every idea through a checklist! :rip:

    1. Maggie Gioberti drowns in the pool after her ring gets caught in the water outlet. The most bizarre, original and shocking death in any of the 80s prime time soaps. FALCON CREST
    2. Sid dies on the operating table after being in a car crash. KNOTS LANDING
    3. Annabelle Troy dies in the fire at the Weldon Paper Mill. FLAMINGO ROAD
    4. Digger dies shortly after confessing to the murder of Hutch McKinney and revealing that he is not Pam's biological father. DALLAS
    5. Nicholas dies after being stabbed in the back by Angelica with a hair pin which she wipes off his blood and coolly replaces it in her hair. DALLAS
    6. Joshua falls off an building to his death after he backs away from Lilimae angrily shouting at him. KNOTS LANDING
    7. Chip falls back on a fork in the barn and it goes straight through his body and kills him. Probably the most visually horrific death in all the 80s prime time soaps. KNOTS LANDING
    8. Richard throws Henri Denault off a bridge and kills him. FALCON CREST
    9. April dies in a hail of bullets. DALLAS
    10. Jason falls to his death in the Falcon Crest winery. FALCON CREST

I would have included Julia's death in the spring house fire (Falcon Crest) which was probably the saddest of the soap deaths, and Bobby's death in Dallas but as neither really died and the characters later appeared in the series, it didn't seem right to have them in my list.

I'm definitely going to vote for that scene, it was so tense and dramatic.

So "faux" death scenes count? That is, a scene where viewers and characters really believed the death had occurred, though it hadn't really?

Sometimes the writers change their minds, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Until I had to think about this list, I had not realized what a deadly place Knots Landing could be!

    1. Chip Roberts' death scene on Knots Landing. It set the tone for...other recurring villains to end up bleeding all over the place.
    2. Joshua gets shouted off a rooftop by his mother, KL.
    3. Maggie's shocking death in the pool, FC.
    4. Sid dies on the operating table, KL.
    5. Danny Waleska's stumbling, bumbling death in Abby's old pool (seen via flashback), KL.
    6. Linda Fairgate gets filleted by Brian Johnston, KL. Way to kill the mood, Brian...
    7. Mitch Ackerman blows his head off rather than answer for his crimes, KL.
    8. Mary-Frances is shot (through the window) as she sits in Greg's desk chair, KL.
    9. April Ewing gets mowed down by Susan Lucci (?!) on Dallas.
    10. Robotic Bimbo Vanessa Hunt shoots Treadwell seven times, KL.

I've been youtubing some death scenes (too lazy to put the dvds in the computer) and of course I had to watch Bobby Ewing's death.
It's a big thing when a main character dies, but I couldn't help but noticing that he's crying harder than anyone else in the room.
I guess no-one felt the need to upstage him.

    2. Katherine's death scene mowing him down. Those eyes!
    3. Mickey trotter dies in dallas. Best man for Lucy. Should've have stayed longer :-(
    4. Jake Saunders falling down the stairs after he was shot, return to Eden
    5. Greg marsden blowing up in the plane RTE
    6. Claudia in the la mirage fire, dynasty
    7. Morgan Fairchild and Simon mccorkindale in falcon crests earthquake
    8. Luke fuller in the dynasty massacre. He was sweet :-( I would've killed off several others before him!
    9. Jamie blows up in jacks car dallas
    10. Nickle-arse and the hairpin, creepy to this day, dallas
Honourable mentions to Kristen floating in the pool, Dallas and also creepy olive getting bitten by the snake in the shower in return to Eden before jake and jilly biffed her body into the sea. I mean it couldn't have happened to a nicer person ;0)

    All votes for Dallas :)

1 I know we didn't see him die (thank God) but JR's death had such an affect on me. Cried for weeks.
2 Agree with @Victoriafan3 - Bobby's death scene is right up there for me. Still gets me 30 years on. :(
3 Again we didn't see it as such but Jock's death :(
4 April's death scene in Paris - I loved April and found her death very shocking :(
    5 Kristin's death
6 Nicholas Pearce's death scene - being thrown over the balcony by JR :eck:
7 That chilling scene when Angelica stabs Nic-o-las (@Victoriafan3 Nicklearse ) in the back with her hair needle!
8 Grace's death when JR and Jack find her in the seat
9 BD Calhoun getting shot by Ray and Bobby - yeooooooooooow!
10 Jack's car blowing up during the dream season of Dallas and taking Jamie with it :(

**SPECIAL HONOURABLE SARAH MENTION - Mandy Winger's near death (FFS Private Eye get it right!) when she went gurning to JR about how she thought the guy was 'trying to push me in front of it!' - wishful feking thinking love!!! I wouldn't have missed! :rip: - no need for sad RIP face either!

    1. Sid Fairgate
    Knots Landing

    The cause: Complications during surgery
Such a game-changer and completely against expectations of tv at the time. Midway through an episode early in the season after surviving the peril of the previous season finale, for goodness' sake. Saint Sid on the operating table, arms stretched out like Christ on the cross while the ventilator pumped away. One of soapland's darkest moments for sure.

    2. Chip Roberts
    Knots Landing

    The cause: Impalement by misadventure
If you're going to impale yourself on a pitchfork, this is how it's done. In glorious Eighties slow-motion while the doppelgänger of the woman you recently murdered looks on.

    3. Joshua Rush
    Knots Landing

The cause: The truth set him free
Lilimae finally letting her long lost son have it on the roof is legendary. Surely the definitive "driven to death by dialogue" scene in the history of film.

    4. Cecil Colby
    Dynasty

The cause: A barney with his wife of ninety seconds
After giving him a heart attack with her sexual prowess, Alexis swept into his hospital room in bridal wear and finished the job. Camp, ridiculous and so much fun.

    5. Dr. Mitch Ackerman
    Knots Landing
The cause: A self-inflicted bullet wound

Before there was streaming, one had to go to great lengths to have an audience for these things.

    6. Linda Fairgate
    Knots Landing
    The cause: Rough sex

Brian Johnston's version of a money shot is still one of soap's more surprising deaths.

    7. Katherine Wentworth
    Dallas

The cause: Driving under the influence of a blonde wig
Oh, that terrifying death stare. Something tells me the gardener was a liberal.

    8. Julie Grey
    Dallas
    The cause: The Red File

One of soapland's inaugural murder-y type events.

    9. Digger Barnes
    Dallas
The cause: Too much blood in his alcohol stream

    Deathbed confessions rock.

    10. Bobby Ewing
    Dallas
    The cause: Talked out

The only appropriate tragic ending for Dallas's Romeo & Juliet/Kane & Abel premise.

    Ummm...

    1. Maggie Gioberti's death (Falcon Crest)
    upload_2017-7-28_19-38-47.png
Eventhough I hated to watch her die, the scene itself is quite cinematic, especially combined with Richard's scenes, a few flashbacks and the dead falcon.
There's nothing leading up to her death, no evil intent or some kind of danger. Just a really bizarre accident.

    2. Annabelle Troy's death (Flamingo Road)
Her screams of terror and pain when she burns to death makes it the most horrific one. And all Skipper can do is stand by and watch it happen. It's almost too ugly to list it as a favourite.

    3. Ted Dinard's death (Dynasty)
    upload_2017-7-28_20-9-3.png
So sad, so tragic that this man had to die because he was in love with Blake Carrington's son. And the implication of his death was devastating (as it should!) since it seemed the end of the dynasty. Surely things couldn't get any worse than this?

    4. Julia Cumson's death (Falcon Crest)
    upload_2017-7-28_20-26-37.png
A season long story arc is about to end in forgiveness and reconciliation, but a final twist destroys everything.
The fact that the final twist is merely someone misreading the situation makes it even more dramatic.

    5. Mary Frances Sumner's death (Knots Landing)
Bang! Dead! The most out-of-the-blue soap death I've ever seen.

    6. Chip Roberts' death (Knots Landing)
    upload_2017-7-28_21-3-15.png
    Perfectly pitched.

    7. J.R. Ewing's death (Dallas)
A villian who commits suicide, that's just so cool!

    8. Linda Fairgate's death (Knots Landing)
I'm pretty sure this is the most brutal on-screen soap murder.

    9. Chief Strongheart's death (The Yellow Rose)
    upload_2017-7-28_21-27-23.png
Because it takes more than another man's willpower to survive.

    10. Lady Ashley Mitchell's death (Dynasty)
    upload_2017-7-28_21-36-56.png
Because it was the funniest death.

    I dunno
They didn't die - they ended up being on the road, finding an overturned car and being held at gun point. It was explained by Angela that they had left Tuscany Valley forever, though the cliffhanger never got a good resolution. I think we are supposed to believe they got away and lived happily ever after. So messy, so Falcon Crest.
