Romance, love and marriage were essential ingredients in our soap stories.
But things didn't always work out so well - abuse, lies, drugs, dark secrets, adultery or simply the fact of growing apart.
And sometimes it turned out that the marriage was a mistake from the very beginning.
    upload_2017-12-7_22-13-19.png
Some couples stayed unhappily married for various reasons, and these were often the most entertaining couples, but sometimes the story required a big change, especially since there was no shortage of future partners.
Unlike the divorces of the real life tycoons, the soap divorces didn't get much media attention (by the soap-media) but then it wasn't the 1950s anymore.

So, what divorces had the most impact on you? And was there a divorce that felt like the 1950s?
Only stories that happened on-screen, not exes from the past.

This was also not a very easy divorce.

No, it was just an example. But the 80s soaps had them too.

I thought Greg and Jane's divorce was a bit sad, eventhough we've never seen the good times.

    1) Krystle and Blake: the termination of a fine 80’s golden couple – DYNASTY.
    2) Pam and Bobby: was this really the end for Romeo and Juliet – DALLAS.
    3) Melissa and Lance: they were far from ‘love’s young dream’ but not always a marriage made in hell either – FALCON CREST.
    4) Val and Gary: the prodigal Ewing son and the hard working former waitress seemed to be a relatively happy couple, until a character played by Donna Mills came on the scene – KNOTS LANDING.
    5) Angela and Peter: a match made in heaven but the eternal flame extinguished – FALCON CREST.

Fr. Curtis meets Melissa and Lance, in the Chapel’s sacristy, (a scene from season 4, 1984-‘85):

Fr. Curtis: “Alright look I agreed to meet both of you here, so we could arrange to go over some reasons for possible annulment. For one thing I now know that this marriage was arranged by Angela and Melissa’s father.”

Lance: “That’s right! Also let it be known that the bride was carrying Cole’s child, at the time.”

Melissa: “And Lance was sleeping with every flusey, in the Tuscany Valley.”

    Fr. Curtis: “Calm down now!”

Lance: “Oh is that right and I suppose you were playing ping pong, with Richard Channing?”

Melissa: “Your whole family is weird. His crazy mother killed my father.”

Lance: “You leave my mother, out of this.”

    Melissa: “You shut up!”

    Lance: “No you shut up!”

Husband and wife then get into a heated argument. Melissa says she is getting tired of this. Lance remarks she that she never shuts up. Melissa says, “We came here to get an annulment and then he brings everything up.”

Cole then joins the company and says, “What the hell is going on, in here?”

Fr. Curtis: “Lance sit down. All of you are making a mockery of this, whole thing. Sit down. If I hadn’t known you both since you were babies I wouldn’t be trying to help you, out of this mess.”

Lance: “I’m sorry Fr. Bob I guess you can see our marriage was a farce, from the start.”

Fr. Curtis: “Alright I will do everything I can to expedite an annulment. You know I presume it could take a year or two, before it is finalized?”

    Melissa says surprisingly, “A year?”

    Fr. Curtis: “At least!”

Melissa: “We are planning to get married, in a few weeks.”

Fr. Curtis: “Not by me you aren’t.”

Cole grabs Melissa’s arm to leave the sacristy. She shrugs him off. He says, “Let’s go Melissa!”

1: Sable & Jason - The Colbys: in the Dynasty universe, applying for a divorce was often made to seem as quick and easy as applying for a Tesco Clubcard. So it was great to finally see a no holds barred divorce battle being dragged out across the seasons. The divorce was essentially the centrepiece of the show. There was blackmail, phone tapping, paternity revelations and battles over property and company shares. You actually felt the pain that both Sable & Jason were experiencing. Which was a lot more satisfying to watch than having a character pop down to the Dominican Republic to wrap up their marriage and move on in the space of one episode.

    2: Sue Ellen & JR - Dallas
: the media scrum, the bitterness and the battle for John Ross. It also gave us the immortal line "you're a drunk, a tramp and an unfit mother".

3: Abby & Gary - Knots Landing: I can't recall the exact intricacies of this entire arc but I do recall this exchange between Abby and one of her cohorts (I can't recall his name), which I think perfectly sums up Abby's motivation over the years.

Cohort: Cheer up. It's not as if you're gonna be poor. Half of Gary's money is a fortune.
Abby: All of Gary's money is a fortune. Half of Gary's money is half a fortune.

4: Pam & Bobby - Dallas: again, I can't remember the entirety of this plot as I've only dipped in and out of Dallas but there's something Shakespearean about the whole thing. Star crossed lovers from rival families whose marriage is broken up by their scheming siblings who use a forged letter to move proceedings along.

5: Val & Gary - Knots Landing: the slow burning build up was immense. And it set up years of conflict to come between the two Mrs Ewings.

    1. Jason & Sable Colby. As Carrie has pointed out, it was a spectacle of soap-y proportions.

    2. Chase & Maggie Gioberti.
I don't remember if they ever got the chance to do it, I think he died shortly thereafter?
Either way, the end of this particular marriage had the most impact on me - as a fan - because it was the end of the Californian dream (or whatever what was left of it).
This was not supposed to happen.

    3. Christopher & Pamela Ewing
    4. Gary & Valene Ewing
    5. Fallon/Randall & Miles Colby

    1. Val and Gary, Knots Landing--I especially liked that scene where Valene interrupted the lawyers who were bickering over property and all that stuff to announce what she wanted (the house and the Pinto), and what she didn't want (to take Gary to the cleaners and create a lot of animosity). It reminded the viewer that a divorce is a lot more than "who gets the silver, and who gets the CD collection".

    2. Sable and Jason, The Colbys--then again, when you have the vast fortune they had, it can be highly entertaining to watch them try to divide it all up.

    3. Abby and Gary, KL--By the time Gary did finally get rid of Abby, they had been together a lot longer than logic would have dictated. Still, she married him for the money, and divorced him for it, too!

    4. Greg and Jane, KL--she may have appeared to be "the other woman" in her own marriage, but she did understand how Greg's life was about to change. And she didn't want to be around to see it happen.

    5. Angela and Peter, Falcon Crest--loved the chemistry between them, but he certainly knows how to drop a bomb on the way out, doesn't he?

My choices echo others'. I think we're all on the same page with this round...

    1. Gary and Val

    Knots Landing
Ironically, their most beautiful moments came once they were separated and then divorced. Seeing them trying and failing to cut the ties that bind. Being teased with "will they/won't they" scenarios each season. It all enriched the middle years by informing every branch that blossomed out until Knots itself resembled a Monet painting - splashes of random, muted colours that formed part of one complex, beautiful entire picture.

    2. Sable and Jason
    The Colbys
The series' strongest scenes came out of this. Most notably the scene Alexis posted above which is my favourite Colbys scene and one of the highlights of the entire Dynasty universe. If only The Colbys was remembered for these moments instead of that scene.

    3. Bobby and Pam
    Dallas
Like Gary and Val, every scene these two shared during their time apart had a rich undercurrent of unspoken meaning. This storyline was what hooked me into becoming a regular Dallas viewer without which there would probably have been no Knots, Dynasty, The Colbys or SoapChat in my life either.

    4. Gary and Abby
    Knots Landing
Strangely gratifying because it was a relationship the audience had seen play out from their very first meeting through to the moment they were divorced (and beyond). Every word uttered. Every stolen moment. Every furtive glance. Every game played. Every hidden motive only the audience knew about. Everyone had seen it coming from the beginning. And most viewers had probably been willing this to happen all along, right along with Lilimae. And yet when it happened, there was such an air of sadness to it because by then there was a far richer picture. That's Knots for you.

    5. Sue Ellen and JR
    Dallas
The dirty games of Divorce: Ewing Style showed these two at their sick, dysfunctional best. Heady stuff.

    Same here.

Knots had a way of pulling the rug out from under my expectations. Even when it got to a place I'd been anticipating we took the scenic route at the last minute. So by the time we got to the destination I was seeing through different eyes.

Like, when Abby semi-confessed her knowledge of the twin-kidnapping en plein public.
She got away with it, and ended all the blackmail (those who knew she knew) right there and then.
It's amazing how the writers made it look so plausible, because I never thought this could have worked.

Absolutely. It was so well crafted even the more audacious moments fell right side up. Like Greg's resolution to Abby's kidnap by Mark St Clair. Lilimae mowing Chip down. Or Jill appearing in Val's bedroom dressed like Velma Dinkley.
