Next up we are going to explore Soapland's father/son relationships. Which ones were your favourites? Or which dynamic did you find the most interesting or compelling? As with the mother/son battle, stepsons will not be included, but adopted sons are fine.

    1. Chase and Cole - FALCON CREST - Chase may not have been the best husband but he always had the backs of his children especially Cole to the point of giving up part of Falcon Crest so Cole could have custody of Joseph.

    2. Digger and Cliff - DALLAS - Was there a soap son as loyal as Cliff was to Digger? So much so that he dedicated a large part of his life seeking vengeance for his dad.

    3. JR and John Ross - DALLAS - The only thing JR loved more than Ewing Oil was his son John Ross.

    4. Paul Galveston and Greg Sumner - KNOTS LANDING - they didn't have a love/hate relationship, more of a hate/hate one which made them all the more fascinating.

    5. Richard and Jason - KNOTS LANDING - Forget "Poor Val", what about Poor Richard who loved his son so much that he held him and Laura hostage to keep their family together.

    1. Cliff Barnes & Frank Ashkani - DALLAS
You disappointed me, now you must die.
Dallas meets I Claudius (or another Ancient Rome drama)

    2. Blake & Steven Carrington - DYNASTY
For all that dysfunctional melodrama. It wasn't easy being Carrington's son, to be his gay son was an absolute nightmare.

    3. Sid & Eric Fairgate - KNOTS LANDING
For being the most likeable all-American father and son.

    4. Roy & Whit Champion - THE YELLOW ROSE
Even without too much tension or drama I was constantly aware of the father/son relationship.

    5. Carter & Tommy McKay - DALLAS
A wonderfully soapy father/son pairing. And it also didn't end very well.

I think this entry would be disqualified since I don't remember Cliff adopting that guy. I think he was more of a foster son. :confuse:

Also the backstory so didn't match at all with the original Dallas.

What does @Angela Channing has to say about it?

My opinion isn't really worth much. I've tried to erase TNT Dallas from my memory because it tarnished the affection I had for many of the characters in the original series. Consequently, I have almost no recollection of Frank Ashkani other than him working with Cliff. I thought he was more of a Chao-Li type character, rather than a Lance, and don't remember there being a father/son relationship.

Frank called Cliff "father" and Cliff called Frank "son". Cliff refers to Pamela as being Frank's sister (they would both inherit Barnes Global so it was all legal).

    1) Jock and J.R.: Well he was there where he needed him, he knew 'Big Oil' and Jim Davis dying in April 1981 lead to a new dynamic the eldest son could now get away with things, he never could've before. Think about it if Jim hadn't got ill from cancer (God rest his soul) would we have "its like my daddy says or said" uttered from the almighty man? Living up to Jock's expectations was very important to J.R. and every move he made was justified as for the good of the business and also for the benefit of John Ross. - DALLAS.

    2) Blake and Steven: They had many merry-go-rounds, commencing with the death of Steven's lover at a fireplace but deep down Blake loved his son despite his bi-sexuality. Over 8 years Blake came a long way from "how could one man do that to another man?" - DYNASTY.

    3) Digger and Cliff: Cliff' talking to Digger's grave before J.R. was shot says it all. You got the backstory in one sentence. Digger was a character who was written off too soon. He should have went away wild catting and returned to fight Clayton for Ellie. - DALLAS.

    4) Chase and Cole: They had wine in their blood and for a while in those early years father / son Gioberti made the whole thing work; the harvest, the winery and trying to outdo Angela. However a woman came along from Chase's past in season 4 called Connie and the grapes went sour. Alas the once well gelled father / son combo ended up with Cole having no more valley life two seasons later, leaving for Oz to set up a new winery business. - FALCON CREST.

    5) Jock and Bobby: Bobby was Jock's favourite son, even though J.R. became the top man of Ewing Oil and for the vast majority the show altogether. Despite the shenanigans from J.R. to do anything for the business Jock did the right thing when he constructed his last will and testament, in the composition he did. - DALLAS.

J.R. feels that he has fully recovered after being nearly bumped off, by his sister in law Kristin. He talks to Jock about going back to Ewing Oil, (a scene from season 3; DVD-4, 1980 - '81):

Jock: "Look J.R. Bobby didn't want to take this job. He did it because I asked him. I agreed to let him run the company the way he saw fit. He did just that."

    J.R.: "Dad!"

Jock: "Now just bear me out. Bobby did a damn fine job. Don't you think I owe it to him to run the company a while longer?"

J.R.: "Well where does that leave me? It's my company. I want it back."

    Jock: "I can't do that!"

J.R. grinds his teeth and walks off the Southfork patio, not pleased at all.

    Oh, go on then...

    1. Paul Galveston and Greg Sumner
    Knots Landing

All puffed chests, flaring nostrils and testosterone. Their relationship was nothing short of gladiatorial.

    2. Jock Ewing and Ray Krebbs
    Dallas

So obvious in hindsight. I loved the mess this created within the established family dynamics.

    3. Jock and Gary Ewing
    Dallas

Awkward, uncomfortable and full of regret. But with something very poignant under the surface.

    4. Sid and Eric Fairgate
    Knots Landing

Because there has to be a healthy and hopeful relationship in the mix somewhere.

    5. Jason and Miles Colby
    The Colbys

Another one that's a little complicated.
