I am compelled to create this thread having just seen what I assume is a new commercial for Estée Lauder called "Beautiful".

Perhaps you can all add your favorite photos and videos, past and present, of the Filoli estate?

The estate has its own YouTube channel, which also includes a 21-minute documentary about its history:

This is my all-time favorite photo of the main entrance. I found it almost a decade ago on Flickr, but unfortunately I messed around with contrast and size too much. I can no longer find the original image, so this will have to do.

When I see this I think of my Dynasty continuation that only exists in my head. One in which Alexis and Krystle both live at the estate after Blake's death.

Always fun to find a vintage image (this one is I believe from a late 1940s issue of LIFE Magazine) and compare it to what it looks like at present:

If you look carefully, you can see the clock tower from the carriage house out the kitchen window (the kitchen is at the opposite end of the house from where it is on the show).

This would've been an interesting establishing shot for the show zooming into that terrace. Or I could picture Krystle there having her morning coffee, buried in her thoughts, when Joseph steps out with the phone and says he has Blake on the line from Europe.

The terrace was enclosed when "Dynasty" was in production. In 1937 the Roth's had it enclosed to create a sleeping porch for their daughters but the daughters only used it once because they were awakened early the next morning by the noise coming from the service court below. The sleeping porch was removed in 2003.

Here's a screenshot showing the sleeping porch.
    filoli.jpg

An addition from 1936, also removed in 2003, is a wrought iron porch which was on the opposite side of the house.

BTW, I got my information from the book "Filoli: Family Home, Historic Garden, Living Museum" which is now out of print but can be purchased for $199.52 (plus shipping) on Amazon. I'm glad I bought it last year when it came out.

Very interesting. So, that's why we never saw the terrace on the show. :) By the way, the image above (as well as the ones below) come from the official website of the estate which has been updated with some beautiful HQ images.

This is the Kitchen (the room with the turquoise metal cabinets in a previous post - seen through the door here - is actually the Butler's Pantry). Filoli Kitchen.png
The Kitchen had been "updated" with metal cabinets sometime in the 50s or 60s; when the Michael Douglas film "The Game" used Filoli the production team restored the Kitchen to its original appearance.
