Before the Kardashians. There were the Gabors. The phrase "famous for being famous" was coined for them. Referred to as "table top beauties", they were renowned for their wit, beauty, multiple marriages, tabloid-grabbing personal lives, and extravagant lifestyles.

    Magda Gabor (June 11, 1915 — June 6, 1997)
    Zsa Zsa Gabor (February 6, 1917 — December 18, 2016)
    Eva Gabor (February 11, 1919 — July 4, 1995)

Any thoughts on these three lovely sisters?

Maybe it's time for a glossy The Gabors mini-series?

Oh, how I would love that. But which actresses could possibly do these ladies justice?

Perhaps they would be alright, but there aren't three Landers sisters.

There's a really wonderful podcast series called The Secret Histor of Hollywood. One episode goes off on a massive tangent about the life and career of actor Tom Conway, brother of the much more successful George Sanders who was one of Zsa Zsa Gabor's husbands. The brothers became estranged for a number of reasons, but Gabor keeps cropping up throughout the story as a loyal pal of Conway's, even when he's penniless and dying.

That, plus her appearances in Knots Landing and The Great Race, is pretty much all I know about any of the Gabors.

Eva was the only one of the trio of sisters that achieved her goal of being an actress; meaning she actually got recognition for her performances. She will go down in TV history as the lovable and dingy Lisa Douglas on the situation comedy Green Acres, which continues to have a following today. She worked successfully on the stage and even had some substantial roles in a series of A-list Hollywood hits, but TV seemed to be her niche. It's unfortunate that she wasn't used to her potential following the purge of rural comedies in the early 1970s.

Zsa Zsa, too, had a promising career ahead of her in films when she started out. Some time during the 1949/1950 time frame, she apparently actively sought the role of Phoebe in Fox's All About Eve. The producers weren't interested in her as Phoebe, the schemer that seems to turn the table on the titular character, but instead looked at her as a possibility for Miss Caswell, a young aspiring actress opposite her then-husband George Sanders. Of course, she didn't end up with either role; Barbara Bates got the former, while Marilyn Monroe got the latter. She showed potential in We're Not Married, and her director for Moulin Rouge, John Huston, described her as a "credible" actress. What happened with Zsa Zsa was her big personality got in the way. It was evidently too big to be captured by the movie camera, but she used it to her advantage to get talk show gigs, grab headlines, and have people eagerly anticipate her witticisms. Few noteworthy films followed thereafter; she was used primarily in cameos in all-star productions, but would infrequently land a larger role in independent or overseas productions. She wasn't used to her potential, but I don't think she could have been, either.

Magda is usually left out of the loop, and rightfully so I suppose because she had no noteworthy credits. Apparently, she was known predominantly as being Zsa Zsa and Eva's older sister. That's about it. As it's told, she lacked the wit and sexiness of her younger sisters, and she just kind of glided by doing her own thing. Which apparently didn't get too much attention.

I think I like Zsa Zsa and Eva the same. To me, Zsa Zsa is funny, quite often hilarious, as was Eva. They both had fabulous wit. Zsa Zsa was naturally funny, while Eva apparently played comedy better. She was arguably the best actress of the Gabor sisters.

If I had to choose one of the 3 sisters, I´d go for Eva Gabor, who voiced such Disney characters as Duchess from "The Aristocats" and Bianca from the Rescuers movies. I haven´t actually seen much of them, aside from Zsa-Zsa´s cameo in "Knots Landing" though they often pop up in a lot of Hollywood memoirs.

    upload_2018-2-5_8-44-42.jpeg

It´s memorable the exchange of puns between Zsa-Zsa and her (otherwise) friend Elizabeth Taylor:
"A girl must marry for love, and keep on marrying until she finds it." (Zsa-Zsa)
"I've only slept with men I've been married to. How many women can make that claim?" (Liz)

Note: No need to say that I´m Liz team here. However Miss Piggy is a Zsa-Zsa fan...

It seems Eva generally gets the glory for being the better actress of the Eva/Zsa Zsa duo, while Zsa Zsa was her "famous for being famous" sister. They both played those roles well, too.
