Not to be confused with kidnappings, however, it is possible that a character is kidnapped first and then becomes a hostage.
I guess it depends on the motive: there was no intention to free fake LB Colby, Miss Ellie, Valene's babies, Adam Carrington, Fallon Colby, Baby Lucy, Karen MacKenzie, Caress Morell, Vicky Gioberti, Francesca Colby etc.
The most classic version is the hostage scene in a "safe" environment.

    1. After holding Joseph hostage, Julia agrees to let him free if Angela replaces her as her hostage. Angela persuades Julia to give herself up seconds before the sheriff shoots at her through the window, causing a fire in which Julia 'dies'. One of the best episodes of the series ever. FALCON CREST
    [IMG]

    2. Richard Avery has a breakdown following losing her job and Laura telling him the marriage is over. Out of desperation, Richard holds Laura and Jason hostage. KNOTS LANDING
    [IMG]

    3. Fielding and Constance are held hostage on their honeymoon yacht to force the Weldons to pay a $1 million ransom. FLAMINGO ROAD
    [IMG]

    4. The Ewings are held hostage at Southfork and Sue Ellen is forced to sing People while wearing her swimsuit and Miss Texas sash. DALLAS
    [IMG]

    5. Jeff Wainwright holds Maggie hostage, initially so she can help him with his book but it becomes increasingly sinister and he eventually rapes her. FALCON CREST

    1. Richard takes Laura and Jason hostage, Knots Landing. Pleshette wrote it, so little wonder he acted the hell out of it, too.

    2. A home invasion at Ginger's baby shower, KL. All the cul-de-sac ladies (minus Diana, who escapes) are taken hostage, revealing how each of them reacts to danger.

    3. Maggie with her "writing partner" Jeff, Falcon Crest. Edward Albert may have been a bit OTT, but Susan Sullivan made this whole thing work...mostly.

    4. Brian Johnston takes the MacKenzies hostage, KL. I liked how the entire episode seemed to be set in the MacKenzies' home, even if Karen's borderline hysteria was a bit overplayed.

    5. Julia and Angela at the Spring House, FC. Had they not written Julia into a corner, we could have had a lot more stuff like that between Wyman and Dalton.

    1. Richard takes Laura hostage.
I still remember when the police free Laura and Richard sits on the stoop, puts the gun to his head and is pulling the trigger. The gun doesn't fire, obviously, but he does it in such a defeated, pathetic manner, I really felt sympathy toward him, almost as much as I did for Laura. Great writing and acting all around.
2.Julia and Angela in the spring house.
Angela's maternal, human side beautifully conveyed, as well as Julia's tortured mind. Even Julia in a habit, the "nun with a gun," couldn't detract from the scene"s gravitas. I also love Angela's line, "I thought the idea was to shoot me." Tough old broad who's still a loving mom(in her own way).
3.Sue Ellen and the other ladies of Southfork taken hostage by the man JR cuckoldrd. Was this the episode that put Sue Ellen "on the map," so to speak? Linda Gray was wonderful.
4.Home invasion at Ginger's on Knots Landing. We got to see that Abby isn't just the blonde homewrecker. She's also a pretty tough customer who can remain in control in a scary situation.
    5. Maggie held hostage by Jeff. The rape makes this a disturbing story, and Maggie's subsequent pregnancy and her family's abysmal treatment of her over it only add to that. However, Susan Sullivan shows she really adds a touch of class to every scene of which she's a part.

    1. KNOTS LANDING - Richard takes Laura and Jason hostage
Because I think it's the most tragic and tense hostage story. I still cared what would happen to Richard, therefore the drama and danger applied to both the hostage taker and his hostages.

    2. DALLAS - Ann Ewing and Emma Ryland are taken hostage by the Mexican revolutionaries.
    [IMG][IMG]
    [IMG][IMG]
Good grief, there was so much going on it almost made me sick with excitement.

    3. FALCON CREST - Walker Daniels takes his wife Lauren and 3 notorious Falcon Crest villains hostage.
Michael Sharpe even has the audacity to turn it into a profitable situation. "I'll pay you 100.000 dollars if you kill Richard Channing".
    upload_2019-6-10_23-20-7.png
If you're gonna shoot, shoot - but don't talk me to death.
And then there's another twist when Walker accidentally drops and destroys the device he needs to deactivate the bomb.
    upload_2019-6-10_23-24-13.png

    4. DALLAS - Luther and Peyton terrorize the women of Southfork.
    upload_2019-6-10_23-36-25.png
As if the storm wasn't bad enough!

    5. DYNASTY - Matthew Blaisdel takes the Carringtons hostage.
    upload_2019-6-10_23-42-3.png
Not the most exciting one, but there were some interesting moments like when he made Hilda and Jeanette wear Krystle's jewelry. Even the infamous emerald necklace was brought up.

I still don´t know the difference between hostage and kidnap but I´m gonna post my choices anyway:

1- Miss Ellie travels towards San Angelo with Jessie at the wheel (and herself inside the boot!) - "Dallas" Season 6
2- The Ewings are held hostage by Vicente Cano and his sexy men (including a Matrix-esque final fight!) - TNT "Dallas" Season 2
3- Sister Julia takes Little Joseph to "climb every mountain"... (why didn´t she take off the habits? Poor baby had to suffer for sure...) - "Falcon Crest" Season 3
4- Karen and Mack receive an unexpected visitor: the Marlboro Man from the famous commercials. Too bad he´s a psycho now! - "Knots Landing" Season 13
5- The Carringtons are held hostage after the Moldavian wedding (nobody wears makeup! no perfect hair! Luke is dead! Steven is gay for 2 seconds!) - "Dynasty" Season 6

It was nice that they filmed that episode inside a light bulb.

I think kidnapping is just the act of abducting someone whereas taking someone hostage is abducting them to keep them captive in order to gain some kind of bargaining power. @Willie Oleson was correct in his original post on this thread when he said "it depends on the motive".

So for example, when Jeff Cunningham abducted Brian and Olivia that was to bypass the courts to get custody of his children so that was kidnapping. Had he then used his possession of the children to get something from Abby in return for letting them go, then that would be hostage taking.

    1. Richard and Laura

One of the stand out episodes of the early era of Knots. Beautifully written and acted, this is more than your average hostage situation, it's a marriage imploding and a character we know and love finally reaching the end of his rope. He's desperate and manic and it's heartbreaking to watch.

    2. The Spring House

    ang.JPG

One of the best episodes and moments of Falcon Crest. This showdown has everything. It's dramatic, it's emotional, and surprisingly tender. It's a rare moment when Angela let's down her guard and is humble and speaks from the heart. And there's the pathos of Julia finally seeming to accept that in her own way Angela does love her, only to then (seemingly) perish in the fire as the family look on in horror.

    3. Abby and Mark St.Claire

    kidnapped abs oh no.jpg

After a thrilling season finale where Karen is shot and Abby is kidnapped, the drama continues as Abby is held hostage on a yacht in a plot to lure Greg Sumner there. It works, but in a quite unexpected turn of events Greg shoots St.Claire dead. We didn't know he had it in him!

    4. Angela and Julia again

    FC 2.JPG

Julia finds herself in the unique position of coming back from the dead, being tricked into thinking she's in a mental hospital, told she is to have a frontal lobetomy at the request of her mother, when in fact she has really been kidnapped by Nazi's who are searching for buried treasure. Just another ordinary day in the Tuscany Valley.
Anyway Angela is brought there and held hostage (the reason why is not clear but this is the episode where the Nazi plotline was quickly wrapped up at the request of the network so it doesn't all quite make sense). It seems hostage situations bring out the best in Angela though, as after having told Julia she loves her in their last one, this time she also says she's sorry for everything. There's a sense of things coming full circle for these two.

    5. 'I came back for you Krystle'

    Dynasty - Matthew Returns.jpg

If we are willing to forget logic, history, and the character and trajectory of Matthew in season one, and just take this scenario at face value, it's all very fun and soapy. Back from the dead, unhinged, and with a team of killer mullets in tow, Matthew sure knows how to make an entrance.

I've been thinking about this these last few days, and his last scene in season 1 was an eruption of outrage and violence.
There was still bad blood between him and Blake, and maybe it would have been more effective if he had just shown up, without a jungle army and traditional Dynasty headache.
It was all unnecessarily spectacular but like you said it was probably meant to be bollocks-y fun and shocking.

Imagine if, during their private conversation, Krystle had mentioned that it was Matthew who ended their relationship - kind of suggesting that she married Blake on the rebound - and imagine that Blake would overhear that conversation. Or Alexis, if she hadn't left the party.

    1) He is back: The Carrington nemesis (Matthew Blaisdel) and his recently acquainted goons take the family hostage, post Dana and Adam's wedding. After being away from Colorado for around 6 years his aim is to return to Peru, with Krystle. The plot spans two episodes; ends with dynamite and Steven to the rescue - DYNASTY.

    2) The nun has a gun: Julia is up there as one of the most bonkers, from the wine show. Dressed as a nun; she has Joseph in the spring house cottage, with the intention of luring Angela and releasing the kid. Angela eventually goes into the old cottage leading to a roller coaster of emotions, between the two women. After a shot goes off a fire erupts and it looks as if Julia has had her last glass of vino - FALCON CREST.

    3) Gloomy Richard descends misery on Laura: A clinker of an episode, during which the show noted for character driven plots / storylines sees Richard Avery deeply depressed. He makes a hostage of Laura and Jason. Sad times in KL, leading to Richard becoming a resident of the funny farm - KNOTS LANDING.

    4) The Ewings are held captive: A self contained episode from early DALLAS saw the family held captive by two opportunists. After Sue Ellen's performance Jock put an end to the heist with words to the effect of: "You two slobs better get the hell outta here. Before I blast you to kingdom come." - DALLAS.

    5) The last of the two-way mirror: Julia had her last major storyline when she was held up with Riebmann and his two-way mirror. He was trying to take over Falcon Crest, using Julia to get info and had particular sights on jewels / treasure which he claimed his previous boss Jacqueline Perrault owned. Riebmann's plan also involved Angela being seemingly reunited with Julia, who the family thought was dead. When the wine matriarch joined her eldest daughter, in Julia's bedroom of the Riebmann mansion a domino effect commenced. This would lead to the end of the controversial season 4 storyline - FALCON CREST.
